So they've embarked on an ambitious program of study to raise their average IQ by at least 20 points. "We're tired of people making fun of us," says Mayor Marty Simpkind, noting that some Australians have started using the phrase "pulled a Cooley" when someone does something stupid. The tiny-brained town has earned that reputation many times over. In just the last year: Police announced they must stop all patrols, because their squad cars have run out of gas. "We can't buy new cars until the next budget year," says the police chief. An abandoned warehouse burned to the ground because firefighters didn't hook their hoses to water hydrants. "I always thought the water was already in the truck," says a firehouse commander. "Somebody should've said something about those hydrant things." A riot broke out on a street corner, when a crowd of pedestrians began pushing and shoving after standing at the intersection for more than an hour. "We were waiting for the stop sign to change, and it never did," says one of the few to escape injury in the melee. Several businesses in town, including the bank, have collapsed because employees can't make change. "They'd get a $5 bill and give change for $50, or get $100 and give change for $10," says an outside auditor who investigated the bank failures. "And once word got out, the place was easy pickings for counterfeiters." Dozens of dimwits have been hospitalized with bizarre self-inflicted injuries. Cooley residents often drive cars with cardboard sunscreens still covering the windshield, try to iron their clothes while wearing them and jump off buildings dressed as Superman because they think the cape enables them to fly. The Town Council recently outlawed Superman capes, for residents' protection. Desperate to cure the affliction of idiocy, town officials have hired the New Zealand tutoring firm Edu-Zone to run classes in math, reading and logic for the town's 523 residents. "Frankly, I'm not sure we'll have much success at raising their IQ," says an Edu-Zone spokeswoman. "There are some intelligence researchers who believe it's possible, but others say IQ is something you are born with and is as unchangeable as eye color. "But we are eager to try, for the sake of the town. These people are so desperately feeble-minded, it's a wonder they're functioning at all." Cooley's leaders hope to see the town IQ go from a dull-witted 75 to an average-intelligence mark of 95; experts say an IQ of 90 to 110 is average. "We'd be real happy going from 75 to 95," Simpkind says. "That's two points, right?" CHICAGO (Reuters) - An Ohio woman was served a salad containing part of a restaurant worker's thumb sliced off while chopping lettuce, a health official said on Friday. The woman "thought it was gristle or something like that" when she tried to chew the unexpected garnish, said William Franks, health commissioner for Stark County, where the incident occurred earlier this week. "Physically I think she's OK, other than hysteria," Franks added. Stark County officials did not release the woman's name. The restaurant worker accidentally sliced off the tip of his thumb while chopping the ingredients on Monday night at the Red Robin restaurant near Canton, Ohio, he said. Despite a search, it could not be found. "The salad should have been discarded," Franks said. Instead, the workers sanitized the counter area and then refrigerated the ingredients before rushing off to get medical help for the man. The salad fixings were then served to a lunch crowd on Tuesday, when the piece of thumb was discovered by the patron. Bachelor Stages Wedding to Collect Gifts Hong Kong - A bachelor in northern China fed up of giving away money at weddings of relatives and friends hired a prostitute for a bogus marriage to recoup his losses, a news report said Friday. The man, in his 30s, paid the prostitute 600 yuan (72 U.S. dollars) to pose as his bride and collected 4,000 yuan (482 U.S. dollars) in cash gifts at the ceremony in Heishan county, Liaoning province. Although he fooled friends and relatives for the duration of the ceremony, however, the groom was found out afterwards when guests became suspicious of his bride, according to the Hong Kong edition of the China Daily. Guests at Chinese weddings traditionally give money in "lucky" envelopes, known as hongbao, to the couple rather than presents. dandelion wine 03-06-2004, 02:53 AM Originally posted by Miss Vicki I'm sorry, you guys, but I'm starting to nod off...so I'm gonna call it a night. :bye: Sleep tight, Allison. :bye: Mr. Television 03-06-2004, 02:54 AM Originally posted by Miss Vicki I'm sorry, you guys, but I'm starting to nod off...so I'm gonna call it a night. :bye: Night Allison. I can't go to bed yet. They had this huge-ass backroom...so I went allll the waaaay to the back to check out their LP's...didn't find anything interesting, although I found an autographed LP to somebody from some lady singer that was also dated 11-11-81. So that was really cool to see something autographed from 1981. :D Then I walked over to the music books section (where they have those piano books & stuff)...then I found a Bobby Russell songbook, THE VERY SAME ONE THAT VICKI HAD SEEN THAT MADE HER FALL IN LOVE WITH BOBBY.
