I'm guessing that the main problem with sitcoms from the '60s is that they endlessly recycled the same old tired situations which was by then, the norm for most sitcoms: mistaken identity, taking back an expensive purchase, getting out of a jam, etc.
While Norman Lear's sitcoms like All in the Family may seem a bit tiresome and didactic now, they none the else freed people from the conventions of earlier sitcoms. Meanwhile, shows like Mary Tyler Moore made possible arguably even better shows like Barney Miller and more inventive shows like Taxi. |

I only ever got into Green Acres and The Munster's. That's more because of the actors and less about the show. Otherwise I couldn't stand the decade TV wise. The same can be said about the 50's for me.

I fully agree, I think the 1960's was the best decade for sitcoms and TV shows overall. The sitcoms were good, the dramas were good, the only genre I don't care for that much is westerns but aside from that, 1960's TV is tops. I dislike TV shows from the 1980's and forward also. To me it's all garbage.

I had previously alluded to this in a thread on the Brady Bunch forums about it being the last sitcom to come out of the "heart sitcom" genre of that particular time period. Building upon that point, it seems like by the late 1960s, the common trend for American sitcoms was to become quieter and more subdued.
My Three Sons, The Andy Griffith Show, and Petticoat Junction all turned that way once they went from being black and white shows to being in color. Newer shows like The Doris Day Show, The Courtship of Eddie's Father, the original Bill Cosby Show, Room 222, My World and Welcome to It, and first season of The Odd Couple were like this too. Even fantasy shows like The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and The Nanny and the Professor were very understated. |
