Fun movie. Great in 3D. But doesn't resemble the book at all. Not sure how they would be able to do a movie like the book unless they had it like an anthology with multiple segments.

The movie was made to look like it was recorded off cable in the 80s, even has commercials.

Patton Oswalt plays the police chief, Nina Hartley plays the college dean, Larry King has a cameo as a coach, John Francis Daley and Andrew WK have cameos as frat dudes.

While his brother Bill (Benedict Cumberbatch) remains a powerful leader in the Massachusetts Senate, Irish hoodlum James "Whitey" Bulger (Johnny Depp) continues to pursue a life of crime in 1970s Boston. Approached by FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton), the lawman convinces Whitey to help the agency fight the Italian mob. As their unholy alliance spirals out of control, Bulger increases his power and evades capture to become one of the most dangerous gangsters in U.S. history

All I can say is WOW!!!!!! A good film. Very violent though! I had heard of Whitey Bulger before but didn't know much about him!! Man, he was a MEAN MAN!! Even by Mobster standards, this guy was over the top ruthless ! I think he really was a sociopath!

And OMG!!!! Johnny Depp was outstanding! He wore blue contacts and lightened hair and with the stage makeup! OMG you would never know he was Johnny Depp if you didn't know! He did an outstanding job playing Bulger!

Cleveland Abduction (2015)

I had this Lifetime movie on my DVR since it aired back in May and I got around to seeing it now.

It's about Michelle Knight's horrific ordeal as she was held captive in Ariel Castro's Cleveland home for over a decade from Aug. 2002 - May 2013. Castro would go on to kidnap two other teenage girls about a year after abducting Michelle and treated them with unspeakable acts of horror in that house.

The cast was great and I think this is one of Lifetime's best films.

Orange is the New Black's Taryn Manning plays Michelle Knight
The Closer / Major Crimes star Raymond Cruz plays Castro. He was great in this role.
Pam Grier and Joe Morton have small roles as a nurse and FBI agent.

WAR ROOM

It doesn't have any "famous" actors or actresses, but it was good.
Whether you are a Believer or a Non-believer go see the movie, there are some very funny parts and at the end of this movie is a double-jump rope competition....(I had never seen one before)..... this was awesome.

Either you will connect with the movie and see the truth of God’s Word exposed or you will have no clue what this movie was about. Truly, our world, country, communities, families, and believers, have lost their understanding of what it means to experience the salvation of Jesus Christ. Jesus died that we might live the abundant life.

This movie illustrated what goes on in the majority of “Christian” homes. Millions of couples attend church on Sunday but return home to argue, fight, and live separate lives. Then they wonder why their children turn away from the faith, the church and them as parents.

War Room recaptures what it means to be a Christian – bringing oneself and all that belongs to them, under the authority and leadership of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, and renouncing Satan and his power over their life.

1. Salvation is a personal experience. Elizabeth did not bash her husband but she did submit her husband to God, praying that God would work in his life. She did come under God’s authority and allowed Him to work in her life to resolve her anger and unforgiveness. If we want God to change our marriages he will begin in “us” first.

2. Going to Church does not equate living the Christian life: Millions sit on pews each Sunday to go home to live as they want on Monday – Saturday. Our belief and faith in Jesus will affect all area of our lives. True worship is a life lived in holy sacrifice to God.

3. “Victories do not come by accident.“ So often we want God to zap us with his all powerful wand. Not only are we to submit to God but we must resist Satan. We must be intentional about winning our battles, whether in the mind or in reality. Understanding the real enemy is key to winning the battle. Satan is the only enemy.

4. “There’s no room for you and God on the throne of your heart.” Either we are on the throne or allow Jesus as Lord of our lives, but not both. We have a choice to allow God to fight our battle or we can take control, thus facing the consequences of our own actions.

5. Prayer is powerful to solve a mountain of problems. A prayer life will change you, your marriage and your ministry, and your outlook on life. When is the last time you got on your knees in the closet and wept over a loved one?

6. We have a responsibility to mentor others in their journey.
Love is tough. Even if you are seen as a “busy body” it is worth the risk to save someone’s life, their marriage, or better yet, their soul. We take risk to speak about other topics and issues. If we have experienced the grace of Jesus we are responsible to share it with others.

Both are great. I finally read the book they are based on, and I have to say, I like the movies better. If you ever do get the chance to see the 1989 version do, it's a very old fashioned ghost story. The 2012 version is also really good. And you're right, no blood and gore. It's all about atmosphere.

Yes, there was electricity in the novel too. The 1989 version is closer to the book. There's no specific year given, but automobiles and trucks are common. Except the guy who gives Arthur a ride back and forth to the mansion, he still drives a horse and carriage.
The 2012 version played up the children aspect.

Loved it. Absolutely spot on homage/spoof of 1970s Italian giallo. The way it was shot, the music, dubbing was all done very well.
This is from the studio Astron-6, who also did the 70s exploitation/revenge homage Father's Day, and the 80s action/scifi homage Manborg.)

This one's a little more subtle as a ghost story, if that makes sense. The music, and the Victorian setting help had to the atmosphere.

With the help of a fellow soldier, the women and children must fend off the spirit of Jennette Humfrye, and end her presence once and for all.

Actor Adrian Rawlins who played Arthur in the 1989 version of The Woman In Black, appears in this. Also, Adrian played Daniel Radcliffe's dad in the Harry Potter films.

Four respected presenters and a camera crew attempt to discover the truth behind 'The most haunted house in Britain', expecting a light-hearted scare or two and probably the uncovering of a hoax. They think they are in control of the situation. They think they are safe.

Many viewers who tuned into this when it aired Oct 31 1992 believed what they were watching was real. And it's easy to see, especially children, believing it. It's presented very realistically.

It was inspired by the 'Enfield poltergeist incident' that happened in London in 1978.)

What a total scumbag. Conned people out of money to make his self-claimed monster opus, but spent the majority of the money on himself, and his drug habit. Fooled around on his wife, brought women home, had a second wife while still married to his first. Even tried to have a friendship with Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer, mainly to use Carl for his Hollywood connections.
Before the film was complete Vic Savage fled in the middle of the night, the only thing he left behind was the unfinished film forgotten in a shed. William Thourlby who put up the most money for the film, pieced the film together, but without a soundtrack, and not knowing what the actors were saying, they dubbed in their own dialogue, and filled the rest with narration.)

Mary has inherited a haunted castle on an isolated island and, ignoring ominous warnings and threats, decides to take possession. While there, the trio hunt for a hidden treasure and encounter a ghost, a zombie, and a mysterious killer.

Kenny goes through all the activities that most of us went through as kids as he and his friends prepare for Halloween. Along the way, Kenny deals with such childhood issues as bullies, death of a pet, and his first crush on a girl.

To quote someone from IMDB: "Probably the most accurate cinematic estimate of the average suburban kid's life during the 70s"

Writer/director Don Coscarelli, upon seeing how he made audience members jump during the Halloween haunted house sequence, decided his next film would be a horror film, that horror film would of course be the 1979 cult classic Phantasm. Several actors from Kenny & Co would go on to appear in Phantasm including Reggie Bannister and Michael Baldwin.)

Army Of Darkness '92  (96 min director's cut. Blu Ray. Watched this version first because I wanted to see if the quality was better than the Numbered Limited Edition DVD release, thankfully it was. Like night and day. I think they said on the DVD commentary why the picture was so bad in some scenes for that DVD release. But it was all corrected for the Blu Ray release.

Also watched the 90-some minute making of documentary: Medieval Times. Interesting, some fun interviews. Bill Mosely and Patricia Tallman talk about how they got involved.
Though a lot of the stuff was already covered in Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Ivan Raimi's commentary, there's still a lot of new information, especially from KNB, Bruce Campbell's wife who served as costume designer, and composer Joe Loduca, and others who worked behind the scenes. Also it was nice seeing interviews from Marcus Gilbert who played King Arthur, and Richard Grove who played Henry the Red.
Sadly no interviews from Embeth Davidtz or Bridget Fonda, not surprising of course.)

Dark Dungeons '14  (Two college students are seduced into the evil cult of role playing games.

This is an adaptation of Jack Chick's fear-mongering ant-RPG [role playing game] comic, which were known as Chick Tracts. It's basically a scene for scene word for word adaptation. Jack Chick published many comics, each focused on something he deemed evil. Because I played Dungeons & Dragons in the 80's and early 90's, the one I became familiar with was Dark Dungeons, which tried to make it out that all RPG players would eventually become devil worshipers, Dungeons & Dragons was a gateway to the dark arts, it would consume your life and all you would care about is playing RPG games. Of course it was all pure ignorance. What makes this so entertaining is it doesn't change a word from Chick's comic, and plays everything straight, so it comes off as pure comedy.
This is from the same studio that has made some very funny Dungeons & Dragons inspired movies like The Gamers: Dorkness Rising, and the web series JourneyQuest.)

The Death of "Superman Lives": What Happened? (2015) via Showtime-on-Demand

The documentary chronicles the events surrounding the canceled 1990s film Superman Lives.

It features new interviews w/ producer Jon Peters, directors Kevin Smith and Tim Burton and various Graphic/FX artists who were on board the project at various points.

Basically Warner Bros. and producer Jon Peters were looking to reboot Superman to capitalize on the success of the "Death of Superman" comic book storyline at the time.

Huge fanboy Kevin Smith was asked to write the script for Superman Lives and he got into it w/ Peters whom he felt "didn't get Superman" and made ridiculous demands.

Peters reportedly requested that Superman not wear his traditional suit, not fly and would have to fight a giant spider. Peters denied Kevin Smith's story in the documentary.

After the Smith/Peters feud, Tim Burton was brought on to direct and he rejected Smith's script. He envisioned Superman rising from the grave wearing a Tron-like suit. Nicolas Cage was set to play Superman.

Warner Bros. decided to scrap the project three weeks before filming was about to begin due to the huge amount of funding spent on pre-production ($30 Million) and the constant arguments w/ Burton and Peters on the direction of the film.

Not a direct remake, it's more or less an "inspired by" piece. It has little to do w/ The Day of the Jackal.

To All A Goodnight '80  (On Blu Ray. It's Christmas break at the Calvin Finishing School for Girls, and the students are planning a big party while the president of the school is away. A group of boys show up and the fun begins, until mysterious killer starts bumping off couples one by one. The police show up and promise to keep everyone safe, but they prove ineffectual against the crazed psycho. Could the killings have anything to do with the girl who was killed in an initiation stunt at the school a few years earlier?

The Blu Ray looks so much better than the VHS, you can actually see what's going on during the night/dark scenes.)
