Raze (2013) via Showtime-on-Demand

50 women are held captive and forced to fight one-on-one against the others until only one remains. The winner is then "reborn" into the world.

* The movie itself isn't really anything special, but I enjoyed it for the cast:

Doug Jones whom I've met and is awesome
Adrienne Wilkinson (Twin Peaks)
Rachel Nichols (Continuum)
Kelly Thiebaud (Hostel III, General Hospital)
Zoë Bell, Tracie Thoms and Rosario Dawson (Grindhouse: Death Proof)

Too weird and bewildered, but emotional along the way.

Actress Taraji P. Henson from Empire was in this movie.

Little Giant '46  (This was one of two films where Bud and Lou didn't play friends, or work as a team, the other was The Time Of Our Lives which was filmed right after this. The reason being that during the shooting of these two films Bud and Lou were amidst a real life feud. Because of this Little Giant relied less on their usual vaudeville gags and was more character driven.)

An Erotic Tale of Ms. Dracula (2014) via Showtime-on-Demand

I was in the mood for some "late night viewing" on Showtime and this was the only erotic movie available that had a horror-vibe to it.

That's a bit of a stretch considering "the plot" was almost non-existant and everyone's screwing each other, but that's expected here.

Victims '82  (Paulie is falling to pieces. His every encounter with the opposite sex ends in violence, while stirring up memories of his prostitute mother and her brutal pimp and the sexually abusive hooker who molested him as a child.

Super obscure, and super low budget. Filmed in 1977, but never officially released here in the US- its native country. Its first release was on VHS in Britain in 1982. There's an interesting article on it, and its writer/director/star Tony Vorno aka Daniel DiSomma in Stephen Thrower's book Nightmare USA: The Untold Story of Exploitation Independents. That's where I first learned about it. It went immediately on to my long long list of movies to see that I've had going since the 80's.)

James, you have a VCD player? Awesome!

I want to get one for Bruce Lee's The Big Boss, because it has the film in raw Mandarin mono, with obvious jump cuts in the audio (the jump cuts represents the point where certain scenes used to be in), and no redubbed Foley.

No, I don't have a VCD player, but I play them on my DVD machine and they also work on my computer.

I took my parents' first DVD machine that they bought in the year 2000 after I bought them a new one (DVD-VHS) combo.) as a gift. This machine can play VCDs and it actually says "VCD" instead of "DVD" when I put the disc in.

I'm not sure if game consoles can play VCDs. I never tried popping one in.

Eggshells '69  (Not sure how to describe the plot...hippies hang out in a house, get high, talk about life and Vietnam, take baths together, drive around in a hand painted hippie car, have a wedding in a park. Meanwhile another hippie discovers a weird glowing dome-like object, and a big salon like hair dryer contraption that when worn causes strange hallucinations. I actually found the ending to be creepy.

This is Tobe Hooper's first film, definitely an experimental surreal fantasy. I'm a fan of off the wall weird cinema. And this one kept me watching to the end. Some of the scenes would feel right at home with Pink Floyd playing in the background. Some of the shots Hooper would recreate for Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Kim Henkel who would go on to co write The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and write and direct Return Of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, plays one of the leads. Allen Danziger plays one of the friends, Danziger would go on to appear as Sally's boyfriend in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.)

Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are finding that modern life has them struggling with the mundane - like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts

I just saw this in the theatre this afternoon. It was good. Dark humor! Had a lot of scenes with blood that were a little bit much though!! But after all what do you expect from a vampire movie, even a silly, funny vampire movie!!

I have a "WARNER BROTHERS HITS" copy of this movie that is not digitally processed and Im glad..... The box you showed jim IS :( (Look on the box,it says DIGITALLY PROCESSED)

Its sad they ruin the purity of these movies... Its really very sad........ (I am grateful to have found all I have seeing how unpure this world is now (Started to be in the 90s))

On the same token.. THE MOVIE "SAW" THAT I HAVE ON VHS COULD NOT BE DONE BETTER THAN IT WAS!! (Im amazed)

1) Its FULL SCREEN (Im amazed its not the same letterbox crap as on DVD)

2) ITS RECORDED IN SP MODE... (Best Quality)

3) THE SOUND IS NOT COMPROMISED AT ALL! (None of the digital crap is embedded) - I didnt ever think I would hear this movie as good as it is on this copy!! (The pic isnt as good as I would like but for what it is,i will take it (Stupid not to really))

4) IT IS NOT DIGITALLY MASTERED!!!!!! (On all digital copies it is)

FOR A 2004 MOVIE WHEN PURITY WAS GONE,I AM QUITE AMAZED HOW THEY DID THIS!!!!!! (I emailed Lions gate and thanked them for an excellent VHS copy of the movie but they didnt reply :()

The Postman (1997) on VHS

The film, based on the 1985 novel, takes place in the then-futuristic world of 2013. An unexplained event has wiped out most of civilization and a feudal-like government rules what's left of soceity.

A drifter is captured and is then forced to join their version of the military, but he later escapes. He then takes the postal uniform from a dead mailman and he presents himself to others as a postal carrier for the US gov't that's trying to reestablish itself.

His made-up tales inspire others to become "postal workers" and they soon form communications w/ other settlements and try to bring about a more peaceful society.

* The film is regarded as one of the biggest box office flops in history, making less than $18 million from an $80 million budget.

It was the film debut of Ryan Hurst who's mostly known from "Sons of Anarchy" today.

All of Costner's children, that he had at the time, had roles in the film.

WOW!! Yeah I was thinking about that!! Thank God they made it through!!! I want to see Joyride! I know I would love it! Along with liking Desi Arnaz Jr. & the Caradines , movies like that from the 70's ROCKED!!!!! ;)

Speaking of the 70's. Went and saw Danny Collins with Al Pachino today! He played an aging Rock star from the early 70's!! Good movie.! Both my friend and I really liked it!;) It was one of those laughing at one moment, crying the next moment!!! It was emotional!! And not to mention, they played John Lennon songs throughout the movie!!! ;) I highly recommend it !!! And Al Pachino OMG he is like over 70 and still IMO is HOT!!! And well, he is such a good , legendary actor too!!! ;)

Patch Adams (1998) on DVD

The real Hunter "Patch" Adams was very critical of the film during its original release saying that "it eschewed an accurate representation of my beliefs in favor of commercial viability. It portrayed me as a funny doctor without going into my role in activism."

He was also disappointed that Robin Williams did not donate any of his profits to his free hospital, the Gesundheit! Institute.

He released a statement upon hearing of Williams' death saying:

"Robin Williams was a wonderful, kind and generous man. One important thing I remember about his personality is that he was unassuming — he never acted as if he was powerful or famous. Instead, he was always tender and welcoming, willing to help others with a smile or a joke.

Robin was a compassionate, caring human being. While watching him work on the set of the film based on my life —Patch Adams – I saw that whenever there was a stressful moment, Robin would tap into his improvisation style to lighten the mood of cast and crew. Also, I would like to point out, Robin would be especially kind toward my children when they would visit the set.

Contrary to how many people may view him, he actually seemed to me to be an introvert. When he invited me and my family into his home, he valued peace and quiet, a chance to breathe—a chance to get away from the fame that his talent has brought him. While early in life, he turned to drug use and alcohol to escape, he replaced the addiction with moments of solitude to help cope with the stress that fame brought. This world is not kind to people who become famous, and the fame he had garnered was a nightmare.

While saddened, we are left with the consequences of his death. I’m enormously grateful for his wonderful performance of my early life, which has allowed the Gesundheit Institute to continue and expand our work. We extend our blessings to his family and friends in this moment of sadness. Thank you for all you’ve given this world Robin, thank you my friend."

Now available in a brand-new HD transfer, this touching '60s classic about two emotionally disturbed teenagers drawn to each other in a mental institution created a sensation among audiences and critics when it was first released. Portrayed unforgettably by Janet Margolin (Annie Hall) and Keir Dullea (2001: A Space Odyssey), the painfully shy Lisa can communicate only through rhyme, and David cannot bear being touched. Strongly attracted to each other, they develop a deep bond that changes both of their lives. Directed by Frank Perry (Diary Of A Mad Housewife, TV's A Christmas Memory) with a strong supporting performance by Howard Da Silva as the compassionate psychiatrist, this powerful film will leave its mark on you forever.

Murder by Numbers (2002) on DVD

Two wealthy and gifted high school students plan to commit the "perfect murder" in order to prove their superiority over others.

The film is loosely based on the 1924 Leopold and Loeb case where two University of Chicago students, Nathan Freudenthal Leopold, Jr. (20) and Richard Albert Loeb (19), kidnapped and murdered 14-year-old Robert Franks just to demonstrate their intellectual superiority by committing a "perfect murder".

I liked this one more than the first one. The first I found was mostly hit and miss, mainly misses. But part 2 there were only a few I didn't like. Still, like the first, even the ones I didn't like they were still interesting to see, it's a cool concept, and seeing all of the different filming styles- from live action to animation, from silly and funny, to dark and serious. Also it's fun seeing what the word is going to be at the end of each segment. Some I guessed, others I had no clue. Some tricked you making you think it's an obvious word, but isn't.)

The Unnamable '88  (College students decide to explore a nearby abandoned house where a creature is purported to dwell. Fellow students Randolph Carter and Howard Damon try to discover the secrets of the house and the creature.)

The Unnamable II: The Statement of Randolph Carter '92  (Picks up immediately where the first film ended. Randolph Carter and Howard Damon, return to the house with the help of a professor. They find the creature from the first film trapped in a cavern under the house and learn it is half demon half woman, and with the help of the Necronomicon- they separate the demon and woman. Soon they find themselves on the run from the creature who needs the woman to survive.

The sequel I think is better than the first.
So far only the second film has been released on DVD, hopefully a company like Shout will release a Blu Ray double feature of the two films.)

I last watched THE SHINING (1980) on VHS :)

Yesterday I got the FIRST RELEASE! (1981) and it is georgeous!!!!

Before I had a 1990 release which was garbage.. Video looked like it was digitally processeed, audio wasnt as loud either... (Although it was the original audio I believe)

This one from 1981 IS STRAIGHT ANALOGUE and beautiful!!! (Loud audio and original video) I cant remember when I actually saw THE SHINING!!!! (In its pure form) -- Its fabulous.... I cant tell you how beautiful analogue is!!!!!!

What a difference between 1980 and 1990 I tell ya.... 1980 was beautiful and pure (Purity had just started to be knicked away at (digital ruining audio) and 1990 was trash!!! -- Almost all purity from the past destroyed.... 2000 was it.... 100% PURITY RUINED...........)

Dorothy returns to the Land of Oz and finds it destroyed and in ruins. She, with the help of some new companions, try to restore Oz to its former glory by defeating the evil Nome King.

* The film is based on The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz, the 2nd and 3rd books of L. Frank Baum's Oz series.

Many Oz fans say that the film's darker material is more true to L. Frank Baum's books when compared to the famous 1939 Judy Garland film.

It was the film debut of Fairuza Balk.

* George Harrison executive produced the film and the song 'In My Life' is used during the opening/closing credits.

Cool, I believe the LaserDisc is a Criterion release.

I loved John Turturro's demented character in this. It was wicked when he threw his mom out the window.

Yep, the other Criterion lasers I have are Akira, The Fisher King, The Player (sadly lost to laser rot), and Brazil.

It's probably my favorite of his performances next to Barton Fink.

Strike Force (1975) on DVD

Originally made as a pilot for a failed television series, this action crime drama centers on the exploits of a special strike force that is comprised of a Federal agent, a state trooper (an early appearance by Richard Gere) and a New York City police officer who bust up a ring of drug dealers.

There was a short lived tv-series called "Strike Force" in the early 80s, but that's not related to this.

The Warrior Within (1976) on VHS

This documentary is about martial arts and how it fits in a modern society where the escalating crime rate and violence is making the knowledge of self-defense a necessity for more and more ordinary people, especially women.

High-ranking martial artists from all different backgrounds in Karate, Kung Fu, Jujitsu, Kendo, Tai Chi and Classical Oriental Weaponry pay tribute to the martial arts master of all time, Bruce Lee.

In addition to exhibiting their deadly skills, the masters talk honestly about themselves and about their mystical, spiritual and philosophic thoughts on the ancient art of self defense.
