I spotted Marion Ross as an airplane passenger! She had no dialogue and she was only on camera briefly. I looked up the cast on IMDB.com and that was Marion! (uncredited) I recognized her because in 1970 she had dark hair and I remember her on an episode of The Brady Bunch. Same hairstyle and color. If you blink you would miss her! It's fun watching these old movies and seeing actors before they were famous! :)

The film depicts the true story about the relationship betw. journalist David Woods and anti-apartheid activist Scott Biko.

It's one of Denzel Washington's earlier film roles.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child '89  (Alice, having survived the previous installment of the Nightmare series, finds the deadly dreams of Freddy Krueger starting once again. This time, the taunting murderer is striking through the sleeping mind of Alice's unborn child. His intention is to be "born again" into the real world. The only one who can stop Freddy is his dead mother, but can Alice free her spirit in time to save her own son?

I hadn't watched this one since its theatrical release. Not as good as the previous installments, and also the effects- both visual, and special makeup, weren't as good as the previous films. But it still had some decent ideas. I especially liked the Aha Take On Me music video style dream sequence with the teen comic book artist, and the motorcycle scene.)

Moulin Rouge!

- The French Chicago musical type, but considered tragic.
- both this movie and Black Hawk Down have:

* actor Ewan Mcgregor in it.
* won two 74th Academy Awards.

- Singer/Actress Mya who sang this movie theme song "Lady Marmalade" (with Christina Aguilera, P!nk and 'Lil Kim) also acted in Chicago.

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare '91  (Freddy Krueger returns once again to haunt both the dreams of his daughter and Springwood's last surviving teenager.

Definitely the worst of the franchise, but still had some interesting ideas- I liked the flashbacks learning about how Freddy became who he was. And I liked the idea of Springwood becoming a ghost town. And the final moments in 3D were fun.
Breckin Meyer's first film. Appearances from Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, Roseanne Barr, Tom Arnold, and Elinor Donahue.)

Wes Craven's New Nightmare '94  (It's nearing the 10th Anniversary of the film 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' and one of the stars, Heather Langenkamp is being scared by a voice on a phone, sounding very similar to the film's villain, Freddy Krueger. When Heather's husband is killed in a car accident and is discovered with slash marks on him, Heather starts to wonder something. Especially when she discovers that Wes Craven is writing another 'Nightmare' film. Soon, she realizes that Freddy has now entered the real world, and the only way to defeat him is to become Nancy Thompson once again.

This is easily my favorite sequel of the franchise.)

Miracles Still Happen '74  (aka I miracoli accadono ancora; The true story of 17 year old Juliane Koepcke who on December 24, 1971 amazingly survived one of the most unbelievable adventures of our times. Flying from Lima, Peru on LANSA flight 508 to see her father for the New Year celebrations, Julianes plane hits a cyclone, is hit by lightning and breaks apart at 24,000 feet. Somehow, miraculously out of 92 passengers Juliane survives the plunge into the dense jungle only to find herself alone in the hostile world of the South American Amazon Rain Forest filled with snakes, insects and wild animals. There her tormented battle to find civilization begins.

- Most of this movie's cast is comprised by the people who actually "lived" the Juliane Koepcke story...including pilot Clyde Peters, the nun at the hospital, and the wood-cutters who found and rescued Juliane. The exceptions are Susan Penhaligon, the actors who portray Juliane's parents and, naturally, the crew and other passengers of the ill-fated airliner.

- In 2000, Werner Herzog released a documentary titled Wings Of Hope, where he and the real life Juliane Koepcke visit the crash site and recreate her journey through the jungle.
Herzog made the documentary because he was originally going to be on the flight for location scouting.)

Toro, how did you see that film? The Magnetic Video version from 1979? That was the only time this film was released on video stateside. Both that and Welcome to Arrow Beach were produced by Brut Productions.

One of the first films for Britain's Susan Penhaligon. This film was also, as I understand, a staple on KTLA here in Los Angeles every Christmas.

Watched it off the Internet, and the copy I watched was the Magnetic Video release.

Welcome To Arrow Beach is really good too. Though you have to be careful to find the uncut version, as there's a version floating around that removed all hints of cannibalism from the film, which basically makes the film pointless.

And she did a very convincing job of playing someone who is starved, lonely and lost. Which is what kept me watching the movie, the plane crash, lets just say, wasn't very realistic, I understand it was budget constrains, but, a model plane looks like a model plane, and when they blew it up, it looked like kids blowing up their models with firecrackers. But all of the rest was well done.

One of my favorite zombie flicks. It's well-known for Linnea Quigley's cemetery dance scene and for revealing the reason why zombies eat brains - "it makes the pain of being dead go away."

I haven't read that book yet.

I did read Russo's novelization of Night Of The Living Dead and Return Of The Living Dead, which was combined as one book. I'm not sure how many drafts Russo and Streiner wrote before O'Bannon did his rewrites. But in this it reads as more of a continuation of Night, and even carries over the sheriff from Night. I didn't see much of a resemblance in it to the movie by O'Bannon.

The new one. Sorry, I didn't think to specify, lol. I liked it. It definitely had its moments. It wasn't something that I laughed out loud all the way through or anything. Other people in the theater definitely enjoyed it more than I did, but I'd say it's worth a watch, especially if you're a fan of the other films. Yeah! I'm very easily amused, so silly comedy makes me laugh when a lot people think it's dumb. So most likely I would like it.;) But it might be a scenario like your friends. My friend that I do movies with isn't really into comedies per se, unless they are really funny. She will most likely rather go for something else unless I can convince her it will be really funny! ;)

I loved all four of the Vacation movies. There were four right? And the concept of now it's the son and his family, a new generation of Griswolds seems kind of cool! :) I wish Cousin Eddie/Randy Quaid was in this though. He was my all time favorite character I think!

I am also easily amused and the sillier the better for me the movie is. There have been 4 original Vacations with Chevy Chase and they were all pretty funny in my opinion. I will be giving this new one a chance, maybe when it goes to the discount movie theater in my area.

Fritz The Cat '72  (Fritz is a college-age cat who dabbles in drugs, radical politics, and hedonism. Film traces Fritz's sexual and political exploits from an East Village pot party to an orthodox synagogue.

Ralph Bakshi's first full length animated feature.
The first animated film to receive an X-rating.
Fritz The Cat creator Robert Crumb was so against the film being made that he sued to have his name removed, and killed off Fritz The Cat in hopes it would stop anymore films being made.)

Though not as good as the original, mainly due to the lack of Ralph Bakshi's involvement. I still find it entertaining.)

The Culling '15 :thumbsdow (A group of college friends on a road trip find themselves fighting off dark forces at a remote farmhouse after a chance encounter with a strange little girl.

Was this an evil child flick? Was this a haunted house movie? Was this a feral children out in the woods flick? Was this a demon possession movie? Was this a creepy doll flick? All of the above...I think. So many things happened, and so little of it was explained when we got to the scene at the end of the film where the villain explains everything to the victims. Too bad as it had some interesting ideas.)

Bleed (2002) on DVD

A troubled woman wants to be accepted and goes to a pool party to meet her new boyfriend's friends. They tell her about their Murder Club where you have to kill someone to become a member.

She doesn't realize it's a joke and actually murders someone.

* The film features cameos by Lloyd Kaufman, Brinke Stevens, Julie Strain and her half-sister Lizzy Strain.

The film was made under the short-lived Shadow Entertainment label. Charles Band's Full Moon company was in a deal w/ Blockbuster Video at the time and they wanted Full Moon to do a slasher movie. Band felt that a slasher movie really wasn't what Full Moon was about, so they created a new label for Bleed.

Only a handful of movies were produced under the Shadow Entertainment label.

It was more raunchy overall than the other films, though.

Vacation

I just saw it this afternoon. I'm gonna have to give it a thumbs down. I was disappointed! :( Wasn't nearly as good as any of the other vacation movies. I chuckled a couple times but that was about it! Not corny, goofy funny like I like and if a few sex jokes are in it's fine. This was just way to raunchy and not even very funny raunchy IMO!

My friend didn't like it either, and I was the one who talked her into seeing this. I promised her she could pick the next movie we see! ;)

Sean Penn and Tim Robbins won the Oscar for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, making the film the first to win both awards since Ben-Hur in 1959.

It featured the film debut of a young Connor Paulo and Emmy Rossum played the murdered girl.

Demons 2 '86  (A group of tenants and visitors are trapped in a 10-story high-rise apartment building infested with demons who proceed to hunt the dwindling humans down.

I still don't like the looks of the demons in this one. Green faces? And the little Ghoulie-looking demon is too silly for this type of film. But other than that, it's a lot of fun. I also love the soundtrack which features songs from The Smiths, The Cult, Love And Rockets, Gene Loves Jezebel, and this film introduced me to one of my favorite bands- Fields Of The Nephilim.

Asia Argento's film debut, I think she was about 11.)

Also Ken Lerner, Steven Bond, and Dennis Bowen [Who I thought was hilarious in the 70's cruising/teen sex comedy Van Nuys Blvd. ]

Jennifer '78  (On Blu Ray. Ostracized at a snooty private school because of her rural, poor background, a scholarship student is tormented to the point where her only remaining recourse is revenge, using the only method she knows: her psychic control over snakes!

This is one of the better Carrie rip-offs. Instead of having telekinetic powers, Jennifer has powers over snakes which ties into her religious background. Instead of an overbearing religious mother, here it's an overbearing religious father. Bert Convy plays the sympathetic teacher. Lisa Pelikan is good as Jennifer. But who really steals the show is Amy Johnston as the leader of the mean girls who torment Jennifer. Amy's Sandra makes Nancy Allen's Chris seem like Snow White. Definitely one of my favorite horror movie mean girl performances.
70's teen heart-throb, Land Of The Lost Star Wesley Eure plays one of Sandra's boyfriend's cronies.)

The morbid atmosphere proves perfect for Todd's writing, but will he live to finish the script?

True Story (2015) on Blu-ray

The film is based on the true story about the relationship betw. journalist Mike Finkel and convicted murderer Christian Longo.

In late 2001, Christian Longo murdered his wife and three children and dumped their bodies around the docks of coastal town Newport, Oregon. He then fled to Cancun and told people he was NY Times journalist Mike Finkel.

The real Mike Finkel was going through his own problems when it was discovered that he was falsifying details on a big story and was let go. He then finds out about the murderer who was using his name and meets w/ him in jail to get his side of the story.

They both have selfish reasons for their meetings as Longo wants to use the discredited journalist to make his court testimony more believable and Finkel sees this as a way of getting back into the good graces of his journalist colleagues.

The film is more enjoyable if you are familiar w/ the actual story. I've seen it on several True Crime shows.

The scenes with the main characters searching the seemingly empty town was kind of creepy. But the reveal of what has been causing the disappearances and the poor CGI totally killed the film.

Happily Ever After (1990) on VHS

The film works as an unofficial sequel to Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The story picks up shortly after the Wicked Queen's death and the prince bringing Snow White back to life.

The Wicked Queen's evil brother, Lord Maliss, returns to her castle and vows revenge against Snow White and the prince. Snow White gets help from her new friends "The Dwarfelles" who are the female cousins of the seven dwarfs.

* This was the final production from the Filmation animation studio. They were experiencing huge financial losses in the late 1980s and the company was sold to an investment firm operated by L'Oréal cosmetics.

Happily Ever After's U.S. theatrical release was delayed until 1993 mainly due to lawsuits w/ The Walt Disney Company. They could not use any characters from the Disney film and those w/ the same name had to look drastically different.

Happily Ever After was expected to be a huge hit but it flopped. They launched toy figures and a video game for the Super NES to coincide w/ the film's release.

That filmed showed just how much Hollywood was changing. It dealt with a much older man, having desire for an underage teenage girl.

This trend of an older man with a desire for an underage teenage girl and vice versa, has since become a recurring plot element in future Hollywood films. However, it was much more common during the 1970's and 1980's, than it is now.

Tusk is intended to be the 1st of a trilogy. The 2nd film, Yoga Hosers, will star Johnny Depp's Tusk character and most of the Tusk cast members in different roles. Smith hasn't revealed when the movie will be released but he did say that principal photography finished in January 2015.

I think this is one of the rare times we disagree on horror movies. I just did not like it. And it's the type of film I normally like. And I do like Justin Long and Michael Parks. I though Johnny Depp was extremely annoying. Think I'll be skipping the movie that has that character as the lead.
I did like the scene with Smith and Depp's daughters, they were hilarious.

I'm not saying that Tusk is one of the best, but I found it entertaining due to the ridiculousness of the plot. It took me a few minutes to recognize Depp as I don't think it was advertised that he was appearing in the film. He used an alias, his Tusk character's name, for the credits.

Yeah, the two girl clerks were hysterical and they're going to be starring in the 2nd film w/ Depp.

In the early 2010s, "The New Founding Fathers of America" have established a new annual event, "The Purge", which occurs on March 21 to 22, in which all crime is legal, and all police, fire and medical emergency services remain unavailable for 12 hours, from 7 pm till 7 am the next day.

The purge has resulted in crime and unemployment rates plummeting to 1% and a strong economy. The reason it is allowed is to give people the chance to release their inner demons, to "purge" them of their hatred. In reality, it is used as a method of artificial population control, as the people living in poor areas are usually the main targets.

The first film focuses on a suburban family where the husband is a top salesman for elaborate security systems designed specifically for Purge night. Their young son spots a helpless stranger running for his life and he allows him to enter the house for safety.

A gang of educated youth out on "the purge" want the family to give up the stranger to them as he is their target and the family struggles w/ what to do.

The second film picks up a couple of years later and focuses on various strangers forced to work together during Purge night.

A married couple's car breaks down right as Purge commences and they run into town to hideout. Also, a waitress and her daughter's apt. are overrun by a para-military group and they escape when a man out on his own personal revenge mission saves their lives.

The gang survives intense fights w/ other Purgers while the private military group is after them.

* The 3rd film is set for a July 1, 2016 release.
