Here's another one that fascinates me. I mean, she was in school and everything when this happened, but at least there's a little resolution:
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/d/davis_kiplyn.html

There are loads of others, particularly ones where people were abducted from convenience stores (a la Deborah Poe), and someone had been there or come in five minutes before or after the fact. I'm going to look into some and post them here. I find that a lot of the pre-1960s cases are pretty shocking.

Few Charley Project cases have piqued my interest as much as the 1988 disappearance of 69-year-old Virginia C. Douglas of Lexington, Massachusetts. I have mentioned the case at this forum before, and submitted it to Unsolved Mysteries to no avail.

Virginia Douglas went missing during the Labor Day weekend in 1988. Her husband, Frank Douglas, claimed that they were on a trip to Maine when she (supposedly) vanished from a restroom there. But evidence suggests that she met with foul play in her house. For that reason, investigators are convinced that Virginia never went to Maine that weekend at all.

Now THIS could have made the most interesting and controversial "Final Appeal" story on UM!
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/p/papesh_tiffany.html

This 8-year old girl vanishes and a convicted child molester confesses to her murder. He gets convicted, but then claims he made up the confession because he didn't want to get released from prison and leave their sex offender treatment program. He still remains in prison to this day, but a lot of people believe he had nothing to do with Tiffany Papesh's disappearance.

It's a VERY interesting conundrum: the guy might be innocent, but does anyone really want to fight to let a convicted child molestor back onto the streets who will likely offend again and hurt someone else? On the other hand, if they refuse to overturn the conviction, another child murderer somewhere is allowed to remain free and possibly kill again!

The Smokey mountains disappearance I've read about before. It's even more unsettling to me that the girl was born exactly, to the date, thirty years before I was and had the same wavy type hair I do.

Yes, Meg, the Fendel children one just bothers me so much. Two children in an unlocked cabin, obvious interrupted during making a snack in the middle of the night... it's beyond upsetting to think of what might have happened.

From what I've read about magazine crews over the years, it wouldn't surprise me if the managers had some general knowledge of her fate. These crews are still around, and besides the general drug use and financial scams, some of the managers employ tactics that are similar to cults.

When I saw the part about her things being found in plastic trash bags it really hit me hard. That's so tragic. I would probably have pulled over and asked her if she needed help or would have called the police to check on her. It's so creepy that they saw her wandering off the highway. Maybe she got afraid that someone would stop and make her go back home and then decided to go off of the road to hide. Then that's when whoever grabbed her got a hold of her, and the abductor probably, in the scuffle, dropped some of those belongings in the doorway as she was last seen walking around there, or (I think this is more likely) she herself dropped these items while trying to flee. Then later the same person probably discarded the rest of her things where they were found over 20 miles away.

This isn't a Charley Project case, but I just discovered it yesterday and stayed up for hours reading the victim's website, maintained by her family. It's well over a hundred pages and hard to navigate, so I'll condense it here. According to the website, her story is also available on websleuths.

Emily Jeanette Garcia of San Antonio, TX, 15 years old and 3 months pregnant with a little boy whom her family named Emilio, was abducted in 1993, held for about 2 weeks, assaulted, murdered, and her body dumped. She had been dead only a few hours when her body was discovered. She lost 12 pounds while being confined, which led me to believe that her captor(s) neglected to feed her the entire time they had her.

Her family got very little/no help from officials, so decided to work with about 10 psychics, whose information wasn't very helpful and often contradictory and vague.

The case was featured on the TV show, Paranormal State. A Las Vegas teen named Savannah claimed that Emily's spirit visited her. IIRC, Emily's family was furious over what happened with that.

To obtain their consent, it was presented to them as a student project for college, but was aired on the TV program without the family's knowledge. It was a cruel hoax and the family have proof that Savannah had studied Emily's extensive website to glean information to reveal in her "psychic visions".

Emily had been fingerprinted as a child for safety reasons. She was abducted from San Antonio on 2/12/1993 and was reported missing within several hours. On 2/25/1993 the body of a woman fitting Emily's description was found one county away from where she was abducted.

Law enforcement didn't connect the two cases and poor Emily was buried either nude or in a hospital gown, depending on who you talk to, and placed in a pauper's grave. It took about a year for her mother to find out what happened to her. The childhood fingerprints saved by her mother confirmed Emily's identity.

Her family had her exhumed and reburied her in the family plot at a different cemetery. Her unborn son was removed from her body, cremated, and disposed of by the ME's office. They did not preserve any biological samples for later DNA testing, the father hasn't been identified. (Determining paternity could possibly have led to a suspect, imo.)

Police also are investigating a possible connection to another unsolved murders. Eleven-year-old Heidi Seeman was murdered two-and-a-half years before Emily, in 1990. Both girls were last seen in north San Antonio. Their bodies were found within five miles of each other in Comal and Hays counties (about 60 miles from SA). There are some other similarities that police are keeping confidential.

Two that I think could also be connected: Sarah Gonzales and Priscilla Amarez, murdered on December 17, 1994. Their bodies were found the next day. Ramon Hernandez, with at least one other murder on his record, was arrested and sentenced to death.

The police have DNA from the suspect, so Emily's killer may eventually be found.

Yet another reason for me to hate Paranormal State. Emily's story is horrific. For anyone to capitalize on it in such a way is absolutely disgusting. May the "demon" that has been chasing Ryan bit him firmly on the ass for this.

From what I've read about magazine crews over the years, it wouldn't surprise me if the managers had some general knowledge of her fate. These crews are still around, and besides the general drug use and financial scams, some of the managers employ tactics that are similar to cults.

Around 8 people were just arrested here in Pennsylvania as part of one of these crews. They came from all over the country. I just read about it in the newspaper tonight and for this area, it was really bizarre. Evidently, they were being pretty aggressive and insisting on cash payments for the subscriptions.

One of the scariest ones I have ever read was about a family (mother, father, one-year-old son) by a duo who would kidnap, torture, and murder victims. The family made the mistake of putting an ad out with their address. Horrifying! And there were others still never found on top of those who were:

IIRC, that family was either originally from michigan or the lady's mother lived in michigan. I remember reading about it in the detroit free press or the detroit news way back about 1988, when they did a big story on it.

It's another case that literally made me sick to read about. And I'm disgusted about Lake escaping justice and Ng using canadian extradition laws to play the system, costing california taxpayers a ton of money and costing victim's families even more unimaginable pain and grief.

Two EXTREMELY creepy convenience store worker disappearances. Both young women, of course :( Reminds me of Debra Poe:
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/burdick_lynn.html
She had been working there for years and was only yards from her own home. It seems obvious the customer (or one directly after) just grabbed her after forcing her to give him the money from the register and she refused to divulge the information about the rest of the money.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/d/dove_kelly.html
It seems this, probably like the one above, may have been sexually motivated. Why on Earth didn't the police come after the first or second call? He must have grabbed her immediately after the final call; perhaps he heard that call and got mad or decided that it was the time to make his move. It seems like he came back with his car ready to kidnap her.

These both gave me major goosebumps. I wouldn't mind working graveyard shift since I'm a night owl, but never alone. Ever.

In addition to the Johnnie Herrera case, here are some Charley Project cases that have always piqued my interest. All of these would have been perfect for UM. I find it so hard to believe that, to the best of anyone's knowledge, NONE of them were profiled even as a quick "special alert" type of deal!

I started a thread about this one on Websleuths in November, but surprisingly, no one has ever responded to it.

This one is really strange. It reminds me of the alleged Keri-Lyn Nixon sighting in the New Kids on the Block video.

The next one has no photo of the victim, just a sketch of her as an adult. Cases where photos are unavailable always give me an eerie feeling for some reason.

Not on CP, but from Doe: http://doenetwork.org/cases/250dmon.html
http://doenetwork.org/cases/15dmon.html

Some people on Websleuths found an article stating that McCormick's father, John Sr., was a violent alcoholic who had once beaten his son son badly he had to be hospitalized. He was very drunk the night the boys disappeared and when Eric Larsfolk's parents asked him that night where the boys were, he swore up and down he'd never seen them at all that night, despite the fact that Eric's bicycle was clearly sitting right outside their home. John Sr. did join the search party that night, but never made any public appeals for his son's return. In fact, he and his wife Joyce began packing up their son's pictures and his room within days of the disappearance! They refused to even give LE a picture of their son for the missing persons report, so it is unknown where that picture of John actually came from. John Sr. died in 1987 of cirrhosis of the liver and Joyce refuses to discuss the case with anyone. John Sr. was their prime suspect and with him dead, the case has long since gone cold.

Another pair of cases believed to be connected:

Just quietly, I think this Thread should be renamed The most interesting Charley Project Stories or the most mysterious. We're talking Missing loved ones here, Sleepless nights and no doubt Hell on Earth for families of the missing. Sitting back referring to their heartbreaking stories as "Favourite" just seems kind of cruel IMHO.

Another ideal title would be "Most Significant Charley Project Cases." I agree that the word "favorite" (or any similar word for that matter) sounds inappropriate. That's why in a previous post on this thread, instead of saying "favorite," I said "piqued my interest."

This one, because I remember it being on the local news a lot when I was a teenager. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/t/teague_heather.html

It's sad because they have a pretty good idea what happened, but the main suspect killed himself, so probably no one will ever be brought to justice.

This one is scary as hell. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/a/andrews_marcy.html

Both of those are terrifying! In the second one, I bet her friends felt guilty for not calling the police that night when they weren't allowed into the apartment. That was a mistake, but of course they had no idea what was going on in there. The first one reminds me of Molly Bish, but that there was actually an eyewitness. So scary. If Heather Teague shared acquaintances with the two suspects, I wonder if this wasn't a random attack, then? I wonder if it was a coincidence. In any case, it makes me never want to go to a body of water alone. And the second case reminds me of having friends with odd acquaintances...you never know what they're capable of.

Agreed. I wish there was more info on this one. Was she upset when she called asking for a ride? Why didn't the radio station verify the dude's identity before he came to pick up a 17-year-old girl? Of course he could have lied about his name, but

I think I've checked out all of the cases on Charley Project. There are quite a few cases that stick out in my mind.

One of them is this one. Disappeared during Hurricane Andrew, but it's unlikely the natural disaster swept her up. A stranger could be responsible, but the mother sounds like she knows more than she's telling

I often check out the chronological index for certain decades. I don't know why. These cases always intrigue and sadden me and I wish there was something I could do about it. I've also probably checked out most if not all of them.

As for Leigh's case, I think it sounds odd that a stranger would happen to strike right in that small gap. And that the mother would decide to leave her alone for the first time on the day of a hurricane.

I think she knows more, too.

wiseguy182
10-02-2012, 01:00 AM
yeah, nothing the mother says makes any degree of sense whatsoever. The way the mother talks, it sounds like they were not at all concerned about the deadly hurricane, but a little lightening is enough to frighten a 13 year old to the point that she sleeps in her mother's bed? The mother failing 3 polygraphs also bothers me. I think she was involved somehow.

WishfulDreamer

I read in another forum that she allegedly called the grandmother to go check on Leigh because she was closer (5 mins away as opposed to 10 or 15) but that the mother ended up going herself instead. So where was the grandmother this whole time? When was she supposed to pick Leigh up?

And why did the mother randomly become worried after barely any time passed? I just have a hard time believing this random crime, violent enough to have a lot of blood and attempted cleaning, took place in such a short time slot on the day of a hurricane. Whoever did it also did it well enough for her to never be found...

All the X-rays and documents have gone missing and the remains were placed into a landfill WTF? Surely all remains would be kept by forensics until a positive identification could be made. Now this is unusual. My fiancé and I are watching Chopped on Food Network last night. The show usually features professional chefs competing against each other for a monetary prize, but last night's episode was a special amateur home cooks competition. Anyway, during the biographical portion of one of the contestants, she suddenly said her sister has been missing for 31 years and showed a photograph of her. This is her sister:

I wasn't expecting to hear about a missing person case on Food Network. I hope they find out what happened to her.

I'm intrigued by pretty much any disappearance from the 80's, the decade I was born and began growing up in. I don't know if that's the reason or not, but there seems to be a certain mystique to that decade.

I lurked on Websleuths and there's a huge thread in which a poster claiming to be the teacher who is suspected of harming Roger has posted defending himself. This case is pretty baffling, but I think some of the actions of the teacher may speak for themselves. Allegedly, he invited students over to turn in assignments and Roger himself went often. And then he showed up at Roger's parents' home claiming their son was suicidal sometime after his disappearance- NO other person who knew Roger corroborated these claims and all of his friends and family claimed he was a happy guy, very excited about college since he knew where he was going and excited about skiing. I remember speculation in the WS thread that the teacher had a "free period" at the time Roger disappeared during school hours; I would love to know if that's true.

I had seen the Websleuths thread in the past. I didn't read every word, but read most of it. I have no idea if Pash was involved or not. There was some speculation that Pash was holding drug parties and orgies at his house.

What's most baffling about this case was that he disappeared at school. That's exceedingly rare. There's hundreds of people in there during the morning and just not something that happens often.

Yeah, I thought that was odd. He throws his books in the locker and tells his friend he'll talk to him later in class, then he goes off - it sounds like he had something to do at that time. It's hard to get at the truth from all the speculation: that he was allegedly seen talking (who saw it?) with two unidentified men, the rumors about the teacher, the dying man who claimed that he was out poaching deer with a friend when they saw a young man tied up to a tree being held at gunpoint. The latter sounds like complete bs, but who knows if there's some element of truth in it.

Unlike a lot of CP cases, you can't get a feel of who Ellison was or what issues, if any, were occurring - he's described as a straight arrow, and his family refused to believe he was suicidal but admitted that he was acting indifferent and preoccupied about a month prior to his disappearance. What was in the assignment that the teacher supposedly gave to police? It would have been a good case for UM to profile.

I can only think of one other case where a student vanished from school grounds, excluding university campuses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiplyn_Davis http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/d/davis_kiplyn.html
Seems she was ganged up on and didn't stand a chance against up to five guys. Police found a hole in their stories, and I would think that they would hopefully have done the same in Roger's case, investigating anyone who was conveniently not there during school hours. As very suspicious as Pash may be, wouldn't it have been noticed and noted that he had a free period in which there was time to potentially harm Roger? I would certainly hope that has been looked into.

I'm sorry, but John Keyton had absolutely no business behind the wheel of a vehicle. The man was illiterate, had only one leg, was mentally incompetent, and had at least one accident and many traffic tickets and had his license revoked. The man should not have been driving, period. I don't think there's any mystery with this one, it's clear he got all 3 of them into an accident.

Sidebar: I'm always intrigued by cases where the car is missing too. I suppose in some cases they may have just been broken down and sold for parts. A car is a huge piece of machinery so it's always weird when they can't be found.

Agreed 100%. I think the answer is obvious and it's simply the terrain that's hiding the evidence of the accident that more than likely took place.

Any case where people vanish from their own home gets to me. Particularly, the ones were young girls are home alone briefly and then something bad happens. It gives me shivers because of how many times I myself stayed home alone during the day or parts of the evening by myself from preteen years on. Being kidnapped while you happened to be home alone for a brief period is right out of my darkest fears.

That's part of why Evelyn Hartley's case REALLY gets to me (I posted about her on the first page). It wasn't even her house, but it was a safe neighborhood, everything seemed so ideal, and clearly a very violent abduction took place. As for disappearing from one's own home, the Jonelle Mattews case I also posted earlier is extremely disturbing. I used to sit down and watch TV home alone all the time.

Wishful Dreamer, is this the one you are thinking of? She did make it inside the dance studio and taught a class there, but it doesn't appear she ever left
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/suzuki_diane.html

Here's another one I've often remembered. Family moves from east coast to west coast (Massachusetts to California). Most of the family is riding in a van, the teenage son is riding behind them in a motorcycle. They stop every 30 minutes to check on him. He pulls ahead from the family in Wyoming and quickly gets lost.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/l/lovely_david.html

I really don't know what to think here. There's the rough looking man, but he fixed David's motorcycle, so he seems to be more friend than foe. When you couple the fact that he wanted to move on with the fact his motorcycle was found near an airport makes me wonder if he really did disappear voluntarily. I wonder if they checked outgoing flights from there. And then there's the fact that Rock Springs, WY was surprisingly very high crime back in the day, and also had corrupt law enforcement. So who really knows what happened here. FWIW, one of the few things I found elsewhere online was a tarot reading that seems to predict he died accidentally, perhaps he made a wrong turn or something. Very perplexing.

That's it! For some reason I didn't remember her actually teaching. I find it really crazy that the perpetrator was able to get a hold of her within 15 minutes and nobody saw or heard a thing. I suppose it's possible that the children's parents all came and picked them up rather quickly and then she was alone. Perhaps she went inside the bathroom to use it and was accosted there, leading to the blood. If the acquaintance really is guilty, then he would have known her schedule and when the class ended, providing him the perfect opportunity to strike. I'm guessing the police have actual information about this person making him a person of interest before he ever failed the polygraph.

As for David Lovely, I don't think the accident theory is too plausible, considering that his motorcycle was found in good condition with him nowhere to be found. I also think that this sounds like the weirdest time for him to run away and set off on his own. Why choose to do it when helping his family move and knowing how worried they already were about him? If he was planning to run off and not be found, why make the call while getting his motorcycle fixed? I just don't buy that it was a ruse on his part. I suppose stranger things have happened, but I lean toward foul play in this case. But I, too, have some doubts about the other man. If the guy wanted to hurt or rob him, why would he fix his motorcycle for him, only to discard it later? I'd like to know more about why David was afraid of him. This case is full of questions and I wish there was more info.

Good points. I read elsewhere that David Lovely wanted to wait at a rest stop for his family, it's also very possible he met with foul play there.

Here's another one I recall. This is a really old one, back to 1957. Elderly woman who was an attorney that held numerous distinctions and had connections to a U.S. Senator. It is theorized her disappearance was related to financial work she was doing helping out a friend who had Alzheimer's, her relation wanted the money for themselves. Case was cold for nearly 30 years until it started heating up again, but it is still unsolved to this day, all of the players are now dead.

For that reason, investigators are convinced that Virginia never went to Maine that weekend at all.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/d/douglas_virginia.html

This one reminds me of a case I once caught on Forensic Files. A husband claimed his wife disappeared during an "impromptu vacation" to Florida (which she never actually accompanied him on, IIRC). Toll booth camera caught him alone in his vehicle, his receipts from Florida didn't make sense, and a number of witnesses reported his weird behavior while he was supposedly out searching for his wife.

Yes, Carla Anderson is another memorable one. I work in a hotel, and it's irritating to no end when people leave the doors propped open. They don't think a thing about the possible ramifications of that and it's a security issue. I don't know if that was a factor in her disappearance, but it's irritating nonetheless.

I think that one and a lot of these would have been good to profile on UM and whatnot.

I wonder if that last victim linked, Dena McHan, was a Herzog/Shermantine victim. She went missing in the Stockton California area where they were known to commit their crimes and a gas station attendant said he saw her being harassed by two men there right before she went missing.

Herzog and Shermantine would have been teenagers at the time of McHan's disappearance in 1981. They were known to have first committed murders in 1984 while in their late teens but I wouldn't be surprised to find out they started killing much earlier.

Herzog and Shermantine would have been teenagers at the time of McHan's disappearance in 1981. They were known to have first committed murders in 1984 while in their late teens but I wouldn't be surprised to find out they started killing much earlier.

That's one of the theories, unfortunately her car seems to have never been located.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/...elizabeth.html
A young woman gets a call from her boyfriend asking her to see him for the weekend. She goes, and his friend claims he saw her hanging from the rafters of a parking garage Her friends had tried to dissuade her from going.

Lande was probably scared of what Nauss would do if she didn't see him. He had previously fired a bullet through her bedroom window and had other members of the Warlocks rape her. There's a book about Nauss and the rapes and Tinicum marsh murders that he and some of the bikers were committing: http://books.google.com/books?id=yVRp-H7KfhAC&pg=PT96&lpg=PT96&dq=robert+nauss+elizabeth+lande&source=bl&ots=kzWewDqXa7&sig=slkG1ts5VcwudvKmBOgGFzaZ0Yg&hl=en&sa=X&ei=tSmmUZPBMMnTyAHUqIGQDQ&ved=0CEMQ6AEwAw

Here are some more cases that stuck with me.

This is another old one, going back to 1959. Boy disappears from swampy area, but he had apparently been stalked for some time.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/barter_daniel.html

Somebody mentioned Trenny Gibson, who disappeared from the Smoky Mountains, though I think that may have been in another thread. Here's another case from somebody who disappeared from the Smoky Mountains. I don't know if she disappeared voluntarily, was kidnapped, or eventually died from the elements.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/melton_thelma.html

Lots of theories on this one. Boy was fishing near a homeless camp, which has me worried. Yet a few different reports of him running into shady sounding people. Additionally, his mother sounds pretty suspicious herself.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/majewski_william.html

2 boys were walking from one's house to the other one's just 3 doors down and vanished in that short time.

a few more 1990 cases:

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/t/temple_christopher.html

This is another one of the cases that occurred closest to me. I don't know what happened here, but there are some surprisingly very strange things that happen in the small town of Bath. The U.S.'s worst ever school mass murder took place there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_School_disaster
On the other hand, the area is also apparently filled with quicksand like bogs and marshes, so I wonder if he died that way.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/mills_johnny.html

This is a rare case in that the missing person hasn't been positively identified. Sadly, it sounds like he had a hard knock life.

The Charley Project allows you to view cases in several different ways, which is nice. geographical, chronological and alphabetical. Sometimes in the blogs, they will categorize by other things too.

Here is a list of the baby abductions, which are intriguing but very unfortunate. Many viewers of UM will recognize Marlene Santana, Christopher Abeyta, Carlina White and Sabrina Aisenberg, though the Carlina White case was solved recently of course.
http://charleyross.wordpress.com/2010/05/10/raymond-lamar-green-and-other-missing-babies/

Here are a few that stand out:

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/h/highsmith_melissa.html

I'm sorry, but the mom was really stupid. Who calls at 7:30 a.m. to respond to an ad? And being that the babysitter missed the first appointment, that should have sent up red flags. And the mom should have met the babysitter in person instead of letting her roommate do it. Dumb, dumb woman.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/blockett_david.html

Check out the composite sketch on that one. That makes the Lester Garnier sketch look like world-class art. It looks like something a child drew in crayon. The abductor was apparently a heavy-set black woman, but this drawing depicts a friendly looking, thin Asian woman. Whoever drew this could benefit from watching Jeannie Boylan in action. Anyways, this family was really stupid as well. Not one, but TWO cases of family members letting babies go with complete strangers? Not smart. I'm also not sure how the mother can die of natural causes at age 35. Isn't natural causes the term they use when people die of old age? Anyways, the abductors were real turds, not only adbucting David, but leaving his brother to wander around the streets by himself. The diaper bag and leather folder found in Yorktown is interesting.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/t/teague_vinyette.html

This is a pretty baffling one. Child disappears in a building packed with people including many relatives. I'm curious why 5 and a half hours lapsed before authorities were summoned? That don't make a no sense. Plus it was 3 a.m. before they were contacted.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/minor_donel.html

This is a really unfortunate one. Man posing as photographer (Sears?) steals child.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/k/ketron_shannon.html

according to the mom, she pulled over, a man pulled up beside her and knocked her out, and when she came to, the baby was gone.

Off the top of my head, here are two cases I found intriguiging:

Husband and wife disappear The same day their farmhouse burnt down and their sons ashes were found inside.

^Regarding the Girous, while I can't imagine there are a lot of 17 year old girl's going around killing their parents, that daughter JoAnne does sound very suspicious.

Here's another case of somebody suspected of killing their parents. Their dogs were also never found. Nobody realized they were missing for weeks because it was around the time they usually left to go on vacation. They owned several different businesses in Spokane. I found elsewhere online that the son remodeled one of the motels shortly after they disappeared.

Reminds me of this ongoing case: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/j/jost_theodore.html and http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/j/jost_marie.html. The mother's date of disappearance is listed as 1982, but it's possible that she was alive around 1988, but the son's disappearance is perplexing.

Wow, wow, WOW! Beyond bizarre. I know some missing persons reports were unfortunately filed way after the fact, but over 3 decades has to be some kind of record. And I know some people take road trips, but a 30+ year road trip? Hard to believe. In any event, I can't believe Marie would still be alive, she'd be 101 and in poor health. The picture of Charles is creepy.

The Diane Augat one is also intriguing. I wonder if they ever checked out that Starlight place.

And Re: Theresa Bier, the guy claims she was eaten by Bigfoot? Right. That guy is guilty.

AAAA, soilentgreen, all of those are terrifying.

Teen's disappearance probably linked to another case: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/bell_david.html

This one gave me serious chills. The guy who claims David was involved in Shannon's disappearance is probably the guilty one. Come on, he's a convicted murderer, a sex offender, and he knew the family really well. It seems like he probably attacked Shannon for sexual reasons and David found out somehow. Maybe since they knew each other Raneer let it slip during conversation or said something odd when David mentioned Shannon's disappearance and Raneer felt he had to cover his tracks. Then David was snatched while riding his bike (probably after dismounting) and this Raneer guy just made up a story that David was involved in Shannon's disappearance . Guilty.

Woman abducted from her job: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/g/geise_lisa.html
I've seen this one before. It is really unfortunate that she went to her workplace on her day off and that no one else was around. It is pretty grim how many cases like these there are on the Charley project alone, of someone being abducted from work. Cindy Anderson and Julie Weflen come to mind as well.

Investigators think this guy's disappearance is linked to the murders of two young women the same night: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/p/pearsall_steven.html
I want to know why they think this man's disappearance is related to the two murders. Could he have been a possible witness?

Friends couldn't locate a man at his campsite: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/madden_michael.html
Horrifying. It is really unfortunate that they can't look more heavily into the suspect, particularly if he really was waving a gun around like that and exhibiting such odd behavior. And the fact that the friends claimed he was wearing Madden's boots. I know there's no evidence, but this is all such a huge red flag. Why would a perfectly innocent stranger behave in such a way and sit there with them for SIX hours? Perhaps most baffling to me is why he wasn't given a polygraph for nine months. It seems so unlikely that this person is innocent of any involvement in the disappearance.

WishfulDreamer
06-22-2013, 12:05 AM
And the Theresa Bier case- ridiculous. A 40-something man goes into the woods with a 16-year-old girl and she never comes back. And this man is still walking the streets. Besides the whole Bigfoot claim, isn't the fact that he changed his story enough to cause them to look closer to him? I know searchers looked in the woods where they were supposed to be camping, but I'm willing to bet he could very well have harmed her and hidden her somewhere outside of Fresno and only claims they went camping- or he could have done something on the way back. I think UIDs between the mountain range and Fresno should be compared to Theresa.

I know somebody was talking about this one on here, but I can't find the post.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/r/ross_jesse.html

This case was profiled on Vanished with Beth Holloway. I was always thought it was odd that this United Nations summit or whatever it's called was going on as late as 3:00 and apparently lasted all night. Do these things typically go on at those hours?

Another interesting thing was that Ross was originally from Belton, MO, which is where another high-profile missing persons case happened: that of Kara Kopesty, which was the other case profiled on this episode. She has also been profiled on Disappeared
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/k/kopetsky_kara.html

Going back to Ross, his father and brother eventually made it up to Chicago and spent a week looking for him, but their efforts were initially delayed due to a severe snowstorm and they couldn't get up there faster than they did.

One lead, and I'm not sure if anything ever came of this, but one of his closer friends said he had a CD on him that was sort of a "demo tape" if you will, and that he planned on giving to a certain music group that was performing at a rave that night. Additionally, he may have had a flyer for the performance in his hotel room, but it may have been thrown out without anyone realizing its significance. I'm not familiar with raves, but aren't they known for their drug usage. I'm wondering if Ross went to this rave, perhaps got drunk, high or a combination thereof and he ended up not unlike Kurt Sova.

I'll have to go back when I get a chance and look through Charley Project so I find the actual links (I don't have them right now), but a couple interesting California cases stood out.

In one, a woman went missing up in the mountains near Shaver Lake in Fresno County, CA (I am from a nearby county so it caught my attention). The man she was up there with is evidently a big bigfoot enthusiast, and he apparently told investigators that Bigfoot kidnapped the missing woman. He appears to be the number one suspect (the Bigfoot enthusiast, I mean).

Another interesting case is of a young man from Los Angeles County who disappeared in 1995. His car was found abandoned not long after in the area of Colorado City, AZ. For those not familiar with why this would be significant, Colorado City is the home of the Fundamentalist Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) and the Centennial Park "Second Warders" who broke with the FLDS in the 1980's. In 1995 the FLDS was nowhere near under the amount of scrutiny it has been under in the last decade, but they were still very, very untrusting and hostile to outsiders. And Colorado City police were all loyal members of the FLDS. Could this guy have wandered in town and met with foul play from someone who didn't want him there? I don't know but it's very interesting and the case is set at a time when Warren Jeffs first began to be a real power in that religion.

^sad case. Such a cute kid but sounds like he had lots of hardships in life. Sadly, for various reasons I fear he might have been a target for a pedophile or something. He had bad vision and I know people with deviated septums, like him, are suspectible to blindness. He was very smart book-wise but I read elsewhere online he had no common sense. Baffled by this one though: what kid would voluntarily disappear right before going to Disney World, yet he had a history of running away. The part where the parents move 4 years later, but leave a note for their son behind gets to me. I wonder if the older kids at school who were bullying him were behind it, then again maybe the weren't. I can't imagine he could have wandered off very far due to his limited sight.

^ BIZARRE one. It kind of sounds like he was kidnapped after a burglary, but who the hell makes their escape in a very distinctive car with a trailer? Happened in a high-traffic area during a busy weekend yet nobody apparently saw anything.

Strange odyssey of a tale. A woman, put up for adoption at birth, searches for her birth family in adulthood. She finds her half-brother, begins a relationship with him, and they have a child together. She vanishes when planning to end their relationship. Over a decade later, the half-brother is dating another woman with her own children. She vanishes, too. And it turns out he's molesting the daughter the whole time! Sick guy. The worst part? He only got a short sentence, is free in society, and neither of the missing women have been found.

Those are some sad ones. Sounds like Mikelle was abducted just literally seconds before her sister returned to the area. This may be neither here nor there, but does one really need a jacket in Arizona? Especially if they were going for ice cream and only going to be a few seconds? Ice cream drivers can be WEIRD sometimes. There was one that used to go by my sister's old house. Would constantly drive the truck but would never have any ice cream in it. Kids would go up to him all the time and he just turned them away.

Re: Teekah Lewis, that bowling alley sounds like BAD NEWS. I wish the mother wouldn't have allowed her 2 year old to be in a bowling alley that late at night.

I remember reading about Elizabeth Eisel. That case is MESSED UP.

I've only been to Arizona in the summer, but I'm sure in January it can be pretty chilly. Maybe they were waiting and the sister thought it would be best to go back for the jacket because they hadn't seen the ice cream truck yet and thought they would have to wait a little longer. What I find really creepy is that whatever was making the sound of an ice cream truck might have been the vehicle that she was pulled into. I'm going to hazard a guess that perhaps there were two abductors because she was pulled away so fast that there seemed to be no struggle or no chance for one. Also, there was no sound heard from her. Who knows, if the little sister hadn't gone back inside for a jacket, she could have been taken, too.

I lived in a safe neighborhood growing up, but I also found most ice cream drivers to be a little off. I remember one time a truck parked outside of our sports game and was being distracting for tennis matches so he was told to leave and put up a fight about it. Nothing as weird as having no ice cream and just sitting there though

The ones that involve no possible suspect, no apparent motive, and no paper trail are the most fascinating to me. I was bored one day and decided to look at cases in the Maryland area and came across this one:

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/a/anderson_katherine.html

The lady was leaving a auto repair shop on her way to work and never showed up. Her car was abandoned with no trace of her. The odometer showed that it had been driven for 45 miles after leaving the shop. No one has heard from her or seen her since.

Eerie! I know this might sound silly, but isn't a dead fish sometimes used as a threat against other people, as in ''you'll sleep with the fishes?'' However, it's hard to tell whether or not there really was foul play. Another thing that freaked me out: How do they know he was apparently startled around 8:30 by a noise? Did someone see him come out of his room? Did someone else hear a strange noise and hear his door open after? How on Earth did they come up with that information? I'm really intrigued!

Apparently Tammen had been studying with another student right before he went missing. He then went to his own room to study, the other student used the bathroom, and when he came out Tammen was gone. No mention if this student heard a noise, though: http://www.miamistudent.net/news/trail-to-the-truth-the-ron-tammen-mystery-58-years-later-1.2188695?pagereq=1#.UeYCDG1 .

There's also a site that has articles and documents relating to his disappearance: http://trailtothetruth.com/ Tammen belonged to a fraternity, and one of the theories is that members of the fraternity or those pledging to it may have had some involvement in his disappearance (at least that might explain the fish in his bed).

here's another rare Wyoming case. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/u/uden_reagan.html

2 boys and mother go missing. Car is later found in a canyon, somebody tried to push it all the way down to destroy evidence, but it became lodged part of the way down. Somebody then attempted to hide the car with brush. CP link has conflicting info: at one point it says they disappeared from Lander, WY, but another item says Riverton, WY. Elswhere on the net it says not a lot of investigation was done on the case and it appears that is true. I wonder why, especially since it's three people missing. I do have to wonder if the ex-husband is involved, but I'm not sure he would have had a motive and the opportunity.

Who doesn't report their 16-year-old child missing for SEVEN YEARS? I think we can assume there was tension in this family, but come on.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/d/durst_kathleen.html
A very famous case that involves all kinds of twists and turns, including having her friend break into the house after her disappearance to search for evidence, two different murders, and an an abusive husband who was feared by his wife before she went missing. I think her friend is a really awesome person and really fought to find out what happened, but unfortunately, the guilty-looking husband is free.

Terrifying but thankfully arrests have been made. No doubt the younger killer was very charismatic and friendly and made her feel comfortable enough after a date to go home with him. Their meeting place was in the beach city right next to my hometown.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/r/reidenbach_michele.html
How many cases are there like this, where someone else was supposed to be working that day or someone else was supposed to be working with the person who went missing? I've read so many I've lost count.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/r/robinson_nancy.html
Two caretakers of a ranch, a husband and wife, go missing. Their vehicle is found with blood and other items previously thought to be missing. Apparently the area they watched over had been the scene of an arson fire and they were set to be interviewed in the near future about the blaze. There was also a great deal of blood and signs of a struggle in the home.

Yes, I remember posting those. I have some doubts about the police in Dove's case arriving in two minutes after they failed to respond the first two times. If they really did make it in two minutes, then the kidnapper must have been able to quickly force her into a vehicle.

As for Lynn Burdick, one has to wonder if the attempted abductor of the college student is the one responsible. It seems really plausible considering how close he was to the store.

What makes Dove's case so eerie was that it was on an isolated part of the road. Plus, he had been harassing her and stuff. Most criminals do their thing quickly and get out, but it seems like he had been terrorizing her and she was very frightened.

I think Burdick's kidnapper and the attempted abductor of the college student are the same.

I haven't been able to find much online about either woman, but here are some articles people in another forum posted about Kelly Dove: http://www.officialcoldcaseinvestigations.com/showthread.php?p=8914

Her mother has personally looked and even hired psychics.

Now I take back what I said about the police. The info on Charley made me feel that the calls to 911 were farther apart but they were only two minutes apart, which would explain why police had yet to arrive. Sounds like this creep was taunting her and relishing the fear, right out of a true crime book or movie. How awful and this was long before surveillance videos were normal so we have no hope of knowing what this guy looked like since no one else saw him. Her daughter is now 35- in five years she will be twice as old as her mom was at the time of her abduction.

The Lynn Burdick case is also really haunting. She'd worked there for three years and probably felt really comfortable and safe- she probably was not going to work there much longer, either, considering she was graduating from high school soon after.

I remember Ann Gotlib. I got serious chills. This guy was a local vet, too, and probably seemed normal and friendly to outward observers. I'm guessing that he approached Ann as she was leaving the mall and somehow coaxed her toward his vehicle. I wonder if he owned pets? That could be a lure to get a young girl to come toward his car if he had a cute looking dog or something.

I hate to suggest this, but does anyone think the mother may know more than she is telling? I find it really suspicious that she would send Clarence to check on Taj when 1) she was afraid of him and was planning to leave him and take the kids with her 2) she knew he did not like her son (and by all accounts Taj claimed to be abused, which I'm sure she would have known about) 3) she knew her son was afraid of Clarence- yet she sent him to make sure Taj wasn't scared of bottles falling over in the middle of the night? That sounds really odd to me. I doubt this is a runaway case. The stepfather was apparently abusive, mentally ill, and stabbed someone. That's too much of a coincidence for me. I'm not saying that the mom was necessarily involved, but her actions that night seem too bizarre, paticularly for a woman who claimed she was planning to leave her abusive husband once she gave birth. I wonder if she didn't hear Clarence hurting Taj or something but was too afraid to do anything.

Yeah, Annette's story does sound too weird to be true. She was 9 months pregnant at the time so I doubt she was involved in the physical sense, but she may have been involved in the planning. It seems like there should be a lot more info on this case. Did they compare the note that Taj supposedly wrote stating he was leaving to known samples of his handwriting? Missing since 1998

Her grandmother has been arrested for her murder although her body has not been found. Police said the grandma has always been a suspect. I don't recall ever reading that. It's kind of important information, since Charley Project says authorities believed she was a runaway who was eventually the victim of a predator.

Coral had called two friends, asking to stay with them because she was trying to get out of her grandma's home due to abuse, but never showed up at either friend's house. Charlie Project says that Coral disappeared while leaving her grandmother's apartment to return a book to a friend living in an apartment upstairs.

I read two articles, linked below. Grandma had a boyfriend who has since died. I don't remember reading anything about him in Coral's case but some people suspect he was also involved in Coral's disappearance.

Coral's mom died of an OD in the 90s and Coral never knew who her father was.

An update to the CORAL HALL case I posted above.

The grandmother admitted beating her to death with a hammer. She and her boyfriend dismembered Coral's body and scattered her remains.

This poor girl was in the process of getting the heck out of that abusive home. She had called two different friends in a desperate attempt to escape and was apparently murdered while one of those friends was on the way to meet Coral and pick her up.

What an evil creature grandma is..... and the live in boyFIEND has died and escaped justice.

There's a suspect in this young woman's disappearance, but the police erroneously closed the investigation at one point: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/copsey_misty.html A series of articles about her case: http://www.thenewstribune.com/the-stolen-child/

Anytime the MP's clothing shows up like that, particularly their undergarments, I get really freaked out.

I really hate the whole "obviously she ran away because she's 14" mentality a lot of teenage cases have on them. Sure there are plenty of runaways, but you don't close an investigation and refuse to keep looking into things when you don't know for sure. Once again, a case of LE dropping the ball. Are they going to compare the DNA on the pants to any of the people of interest or at least try?

This one seems so strange to me. Why would an epileptic drive from Texas to Maine to hike alone, particularly when she was not an experienced hiker and carried no equipment? I wish there were more details online about this case.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/n/newton_kurt.html

So many cases like this. Parents are camping or picnicking and their child vanishes. Reminds me of Michael Henley and Nyleen Kay Marshall, though I think Nyleen's case and Kurt's are definite abductions. Kurt was afraid of the woods and on his tricycle. His tricycle appeared dumped.

I'm also reminded of this case: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/bowman_thomas.html A serial child killer happened to be right where this boy and his family were having an outing and authorities also believe he abducted another boy camping with his YMCA group. He even killed his little sister-in-law and her friend. The bastard never really revealed where he left any of his victims so the families are still wondering.

Re: Kurt Newton: I do remember that one. When I was a little boy, I had a somewhat similar experience. I was at a large park with family and friends and had gotten lost. I wandered around for quite a bit. I came across a group of Asians who appeared concerned, but didn't speak English and weren't able to help. I was terrified and started crying, but eventually found my family. It is to that extent, that I can imagine what Kurt and others in similar situations go through. Though I do agree with you Wishful, that he was probably abducted. The Big Wheel at the dump site sounds like the work of an abductor and I definitely don't think Young Kurt would have gone there. I really have to feel for the parents: they went to monumental efforts, including sending pictures to every school district in the United States and even looking in Canada. How heartbreaking. :(

Found a few articles on Kurt Newton. This one was written 2 years ago and has some additional information: that Kurt was last seen by a 13 year old girl, that immense rain may have washed away evidence, and that a person riding a helicopter looking for Kurt could hear his mother calling for him.

http://www.wlbz2.com/news/article/201579/315/36-years-later-Kurt-Newton-disappearance-still-a-mystery

Here's a lengthy 7 page article from 1979, 4 years after the disappearance.

http://www.yankeemagazine.com/article/features/mysteries/vanished/5

Someone on a CP blog also says that they knew of a station wagon that whizzed out of the area at the time of the disappearance, not sure if that's true or not.

What a tragic case. Thanks for the articles and video. Those two searchers have big hearts and I love that they claim they will gladly go back searching if they get tips.

I found a documentary on the forbidden site about missing children (dated about 20 years ago). Amber Swartz' mother is interviewed and some other children are profiled. Here are two of them, definite abductions:

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/brooks_gina.html
I find it really disturbing that she was actually seen talking to the suspicious car and that her cries for help were heard but no one saw the actual abduction. They have suspects but not enough evidence.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/masaoay_michael.html

This boy vanished on his way to school. His clarinet was found dismantled (only part of it) along with his duffel bag under a rock on a beach. I'm wondering if he tried to use the clarinet as a weapon to defend himself and that's why there was only part of it found, because it got broken in a struggle.

What a tragic coincidence. I think it's clear Charles' case was a definite accident with him becoming lost in the snow, but I think Michael ran into foul play. Someone may have jumped him or more than one person jumped out while he was riding his bike and got him to stop or when he pulled over momentarily. The fact that his shoes and bike were found so far away from each other reeks of foul play rather than an accident or something along those lines.

My initial reaction was died from the elements/exposure or perhaps fell down a mine, but after reflecting on it, the mother's account worries me. Not checking on your kid for 2 hours when he's out in the heavy snow, and waiting until midnight to call police? Incidentally, the CP article has been greatly expanded since I read it last and now seems to suspect the mother more.

This case raises a lot of questions. A teenage boy called his mother from the residential treatment facility where he was staying. He insinuated that something was wrong, but was unable to provide details because his call was being monitored. He then disappeared, but the facility later returned the clothing he supposedly was last seen wearing, as well as both pairs of his shoes: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/p/pillsen-rahier_robert.html and http://www.kktv.com/home/headlines/97238619.html I don't think that this kid was ever a runaway.

A mother, for reasons unknown, told her other children that their sister had been located murdered. They later determined that this wasn't true: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/creech_melinda.html

Another disappearance that unfortunately has had no further developments; from what I've read on other sites, the fiance doesn't seem to be a suspect: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/g/gutierrez_zita.html

I have no idea what to make of this one

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/swedell_susan.html

Most people believe she was abducted, but the fact that she voluntarily got in the car with the man throws some doubt on that. Plus, going straight home to watch a movie seems like odd plans for an attractive 19 year old woman, especially since she was seen changing into a short skirt right before she left -- it seems to indicate she had other plans. Plus, the man she got a ride from appeared to be waiting for her at the gas station, how would he know she would arrive there unless she told him he was going there? It does say she was dropped out of college due to being homesick, so that prevents me from 100% believing she volunatarily disappeared.

Changing into a short skirt despite the cold, snowy weather is a huge what the...moment for me. I also don't know what to make of her apartment being used 2 days after she was last seen.

Very, very strange one.

I think I lean more toward foul play and the theory that someone deliberately tampered with her car so they could follow her and offer her a ride. I think it was someone she knew. Perhaps a coworker or friend who knew her work hours and her car. I got goosebumps at the mention that the driver appeared to be waiting for her. She wouldn't have known that her car was going to overheat and that she would end up at the gas station, so I think the guy followed her there.

I don't think going home to watch a movie is necessarily odd, but the short skirt in the wintertime bit is kind of weird to me, too, unless she was wearing warm leggings under it (doubtful, since that's not mentioned). What an odd choice for a snowy, February day. I don't know much about Minnesota except that winters there can be brutal. Also, the whole bit about her mom thinking she came home a few days later? Creepy! If Susan did run away, which I doubt, why would she put the pantsuit back on the bed? Same goes for any assailant-- what would be the point? Unless he was removing any evidence of their friendship/ his connection with Susan from the apartment.

Actually it was January. What I want to know is why did she apparently not call a wrecker or service shop or anything like that? Or even her Mom or a friend or relative to inform them of what happened/ask for a ride?

I would like to know who this Dale is. Most employers don't allow personal phone calls during work. I'd like to know the nature of these calls.

Oops, I looked at her DOB rather than date missing, my mistake. Even worse in terms of weather! I also find it intriguing that she didn't call anyone from the station. My best guess is that she intended to use a payphone, but then saw the man she got the ride with was there and decided to get in the car with him. I want to know more details about the station attendant's account. How long was she at the gas station? (leaving "shortly afterward" is very vague...) What color was the man's hair? I'm guessing he got out of the car since the witness said he was tall.

I'd also like to know about the man named Dale. I really wish we had some more information about the content of the phone calls and her reaction to them. It's frustratingly cryptic that she was receiving calls from an unknown male only to disappear shortly thereafter and we don't even know how she felt or what she said about these calls.

TracyLynnS
10-09-2013, 10:54 AM
The CP page says she disappeared in 1988 and was receiving calls at her work in 1989.

That's either a typo on the date, or someone was calling her work asking for her after she had already gone missing.

It definitely sounds like her car was deliberately tampered with and the guy followed her, knowing the car would break down at some point, and he could "be a hero" and offer her a ride. I think she recognized him.... maybe not from her circle of friends, but she was familiar enough with him to accept the ride rather than calling a friend or family for help. A customer? A friend or relative of one of her friends?

I don't know what to make of her changing into a mini skirt in the winter before she left work. She worked at Kmart. Maybe she had just bought the skirt and wanted to wear it? Or she spilled something on her clothes and didn't want to go out in the cold with wet clothes on, but the skirt was the only outfit she had in her locker? Maybe left over from summer when she'd change clothes after work to go out?

wiseguy182

So many unanswered questions. I'd like to know if she smoked, and what direction she and the man were headed in when they left the gas station.

Assuming this man followed Susan, wouldn't she have noticed that, and would she have been so desperate as to get a ride with him? The gas station was only a mile from her house, and her mother was able to drive it as far enough as to a service station - how far that was, we don't know.

WishfulDreamer
10-13-2013, 08:32 AM
The short skirt indicates to me that she probably was planning to just go home. Don't need to worry about the cold too much if you're just getting into your heated car for a drive and then home. Then once she was at the gas station she was probably freezing and wanted to get a ride home, presuming this is what the person in the car offered her. I think she had to have known this guy. Why risk getting in the car with a stranger when you're a mile from home and have access to a payphone (more than likely)?

As for the car's condition, it sounds like Susan pulled into the gas station just to be on the safe side. My theory is that after she got permission to leave the car, she was planning to use the payphone to call for a ride/tell her mom about the car problem. Then she saw the man in the car and changed her plans, thinking he would get her home fast. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. :(

My husband and I stayed in a cabin in the Smokies once. One of the books they had available for reading was this one. http://www.amazon.com/Unsolved-Disappearances-Great-Smoky-Mountains-ebook/dp/B004RR19GG It had the stories of Trenny Gibson, Pauline Melton, and Dennis Martin. Made it hard to sleep that night.

I think Melton may have left voluntarily. I'm not sure, but I think I remember the book saying she had left to start a new life with a new man earlier in life. Like she was the type to run away. I think maybe she met up with someone and took off. There was also a withdrawal or an inquiry on a retirement account of hers (I think) after her disappearance.

and his ghost haunting the place is creepy. I'm right next to East Lansing and Michigan State University. I frequently hear reports that Mary Mayo building is haunted. Shadowlands website has this blurb:

"strange presence felt in the basement corridor linking the two wings of the dormitory. Female figure seen in west lounge, near the piano, said to be Mary Mayo herself. "Red Room" on fourth floor - allegedly used by students in quasi-Satanic rituals. From the third floor gable room, it is possible to see the window to the locked fourth floor."

Lancaster refers to Lancaster, CA not the one in Pennsylvania. I can see how it would be confusing, though.

I wish this one had more details to provide; I would think an apparently abducted mother and son case would be heavily profiled.

Re: Ronald Tammen, I also perceived the dead fish as a threat. Sure it might have been a hazing, but I also immediately thought of ''sleeping with the fishes.'' And yes, the fact that the dormitory was an asylum before is really creepy.

As for the blood testing, I don't think that him wanting it tested is so strange in itself, but why go to the coroner rather than a doctor?

Also, didn't the person he was studying with find it strange that he never came back after hearing the noise? Why did it fall on his roommate to report him missing? I know if I was studying with someone in their room and they didn't come back after going to an investigate a noise I would be really creeped out and trying to figure out what happened.

I have a few:

Trenny Gibson, one of the Smokies disappearances:
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/g/gibson_trenny.html

I used to think this seemed like another case of someone getting lost in the mountains, but apparently cigarette butts and a can of beer were found near the place Trenny was last seen (that hadn't been there before). I'm wondering if it was possible that she was grabbed by some adult predator in the location. She was last seen around 3 and that's around the same time everyone returned to the school bus. If everyone was on their way to the bus and leaving the area, maybe someone was able to corner and abduct Trenny. Apparently a highway runs right past the dome she was last seen near.

She was apparently being threatened by a male student who students swore were following the school bus; school records indicate, however, that he was in class when she vanished.

As we say in Tennessee, Christian's father and stepmother seem about as useful as teats on a boar hog. How pathetic and disgusting.

If not for those nurses, Christian may not have survived as long as he did, and after his disappearance, there may not have been anyone to provide such a detailed history of his family and living situation.

I feel sick to my stomach after reading that :( Also, the fact that his nurses' needed to buy his medication because his father wouldn't and didn't medicate him regularly made me very angry. Easily one of the biggest lowlifes I have ever read about. Even if he is innocent (which I doubt) he and the stepmother are sick people.

Apparently a highway runs right past the dome she was last seen near.

Yes, it's US 441. It runs right through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The first cities you encounter outside the park boundaries while traveling on 441 are Gatlinburg (TN) and Cherokee (NC). It is a small, rather narrow two-lane highway that winds throughout the park.

I think it's worth noting that Clingman's Dome and its trailhead (as well as the Andrews Bald trailhead, which is literally directly across 441 from that location) is very, very close to the North Carolina state line. If Trenny was abducted, she could've been taken out of the state in a snap.

MegtheEgg86
11-24-2013, 02:01 AM
Additionally, there are conflicting accounts as to where exactly Trenny went missing. Some of her classmates claim they last saw her on the Andrews Bald trail. Others claim they last saw her on the Clingman's Dome trail. Personally, I find it more difficult to wrap my mind around her being accosted on the Andrews Bald trail. It's rather narrow and generally follows a ridge line. In some areas, you are only able to pass on one side as there's cliff on the other. You would definitely take notice of someone passing you by on this particular trail.

Conversely, Clingman's Dome is one of the shortest and most popular trails in the park (Clingman's Dome is the highest point in the state of Tennessee). It is very wide and today it is paved (and has been as far back as I can remember, which is about the early '90s. It may not have been in the '70s. I'd have to ask my parents). If anyone nabbed her anywhere, I would think it would be Clingman's Dome.

There is a large parking lot at the Andrews Bald trailhead across the highway. If it were full of vehicles from all over the country (which it normally is, especially in the summer and fall), that would compound the problem even further.

Interestingly, Trenny disappeared seven months after William Bradford Bishop, whose vehicle was found in a completely different area of the park.

ETA: Here is a photo of me at Andrews Bald sometime around November 2005. This is the actual hike Trenny Gibson and her classmates took for that particular field trip, and nearly everyone reported seeing her on this trail. Like CP says, Trenny had on a jacket borrowed from a male classmate because it was so cold that day in October 1976. I think many students actually didn't even make it to the Bald (where I'm standing) because they were so uncomfortably under-dressed.

Wow, Meg, thanks for the insight! Looks like a beautiful place and it's a real shame people have gone missing there. Judging from your experience in the Smokies, do you think it's more likely that she fell/got lost and just wasn't found or do you think this was a likely abduction?

It's very interesting to see the various and conflicting accounts from that day, including the alleged sighting of the boy who threatened to kill Trenny. Even if he was in class that day (if the records are to be believed), I'd love to know why he made these threats and why some students were so certain it was him following the school bus.

The Smokies are just about my favorite place on earth. I have to admit I hate visiting and thinking about the disappearances that have taken place there--especially that of Dennis Martin. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/martin_dennis.html

I'm 90% toward this being an abduction based on three factors:

I lean heavily toward an abduction for three reasons:

1. The volume of visitors that particular area receives. You are likely to encounter a great mix of plenty of other people in just a handful of places in the park, and this is one of them. She was also traveling with a large group herself.

2. The NPS has always done an outstanding job of maintaining trails and facilities, and the GSMNP is no exception (in fact, it's the most-visited park in the nation and the Appalachian Trail runs right through it, so maintenance is an absolute priority). I don't see things like washed-out trails contributing to an accident. This isn't to say that people haven't died in the Smokies, but most of the time those deaths have unfortunately been due to severe lack of judgement, like teeter-tottering over the edge of Charlies Bunion or veering wildly off trail and not noticing a drop-off point through the thick undergrowth. From what (albeit little) I have read about Trenny, I don't take her to have been someone who would have taken these sort of risks. Also keep in mind that it was quite cold that day and many kids were trying to get back to the bus. She wouldn't have taken time to wander off.

3. The high-speed avenue of escape US 441 allows. She could have been directed or pushed straight into a vehicle in the parking lot and well out of there before anyone ever noticed she was missing. Within just one hour, she could be two or three counties away in Tennessee or North Carolina, depending on whether the driver went west or east, respectively.

4. The beer, and the cigarette butts.

It's very interesting to see the various and conflicting accounts from that day, including the alleged sighting of the boy who threatened to kill Trenny. Even if he was in class that day (if the records are to be believed), I'd love to know why he made these threats and why some students were so certain it was him following the school bus.

I would like to know that myself. If he actually HAD been following that bus, he would have had to have tailed it over an hour. Bearden High School is in the heart of west Knoxville. The kid would've had to have followed the bus over miles and miles on I-40 E (passing literally just feet from what would eventually become the hotel parking lot Blair Adams was found in close to twenty years later, in yet another weird UM tie-in), into the cities of Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, and over ten miles into the park itself. I find that a little hard to believe, but I would still very much like to know why those kids were so insistent.

Great post. I agree about her not just wandering off. On such a cold day where she had to borrow another student's jacket, walking off on her own rather than going to seek refuge on the bus seems peculiar. And the highway being right there makes it such a likely scenario, along with the beer/cigarette findings. It's chilling to think that while the school was herding students into the bus and doing a head count, she may have been being driven far away from the scene.

Obviously, this happened before DNA testing, but I wonder what the odds are that LE collected the beer/cigarettes for later testing?

The first commenter following this article says she was in the student group with Trenny Gibson on the trail that day: http://www.thedailytimes.com/Local_News/story/Some-Smokies-disappearances-never-solved-id-021868 I believe most people who go missing in forests and national and state parks either were injured or became lost and succumbed to the elements, but this if this woman actually saw two men out there off of the trail while the students were hiking, it makes the circumstances of Gibson's disappearance much more suspicious.

Three teenagers who knew a missing girl initially claimed that she was with one of the boys the day she disappeared, then all three of them change their statements and claim it was another girl that they were with: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/h/hall_joan.html

Yet another case of LE insisting this had to be a runaway case at first  I know many teenagers do run away, but they had absolutely nothing to suggest that here.

The ''boyfriend'' sighting is just plain weird. If she really had a secret boyfriend, why wouldn't she tell her close friends but then easily divulge that information when running into a classmate who offered her a ride? If his account is correct, though, it would explain what happened after she exited the convenience store. Then things may have turned ugly rather than him driving her to the grade school she left school early to assist at.

The other sighting with the three boys is also bizarre. All three of them changing the story, the deputy's son leaving, and the claim that it was another girl there after all? Shady. As a creepy addenum, the article you provided mentioned that this other girl ended up being murdered in another state!

I'm a little distrubed by this statement though: “I would love to think we’re going to find her, like Jaycee Dugard or one of those girls from Cleveland,”

Huh? Each of those girls were imprisoned for at least a decade, kidnapped, raped repeatedly, etc. I think a better thing to wish for is that Joan left on her own accord and was living comfortably somewhere.

I think the Charley Project made an error and Joan's parents actually passed away in 1994 (according to the article linked above), but it's still a terrible situation, particularly with the aunt asking people to pull over at the mother's request to doublecheck that Joan wasn't in the car.

I think both Pauline Melton and Trenny Gibson left on their own accord. Pauline had sped up her pace, separated from her group and looked back at them and smirked. In addition to the fact she had deviated from her normal routine that day, which included placing several phone calls.

Trenny also separated from her group and had turned right, despite the trail turning left. I don't think the cigarette butts amount to much. People smoke outside all the time, and it could have just been a case of somebody dumping the ashtray from their car. I don't think the school mate had anything to do with it, several people witnessed him at school, which backed up the records.

Either that, or they fell in the brush, but I don't suspect foul play in either.

A teenage couple vanishes after hitching a ride to a concert. Nearly 30 years later, a man claims he saw them drown, but I don't know if I buy his story. He claims that the two were swept away alive and he and the others just walked away (despite this guy being more than capable of rescuing them). He also conveniently doesn't remember where this body of water was. Because this guy was heading to the same spot, and the concert was 75 miles away, I would think they could check out rivers along popular routes to the concert. One thing I definitely don't believe is that they ran off. Yes they exchanged wedding rings, but were both diligent students and Bonita's father was seriously ill and she was worried about him. 40 years later, no answers.
One frustrating problem is that the teens' dental records have been lost.

Boy, I don't know. I don't think the Navy guy is necessarily guilty. They were hitchhiking, and it's unclear whether or not they made it to the concert, so I think it's entirely possible the guy who gave them a lift did them in. Then again, Bonita sneaked away to grab $80 and might have called her father after their disappearance, so I think it's possible they could have decided to ran away, perhaps after attending the concert. Plus, I'm not sure what motive the Navy guy could have had. Perhaps he just has mental issues. With 800,000 (!!) people at the concert, I don't think there's any way of ever knowing if they made it there or not.

Here's an interesting post on the case. Mitchel's sister doesn't believe the Navy Guy's account because he couldn't recognize the pair from photos, couldn't accurately identify their clothes, and claimed they had no ID. When their belongings still should have been on the shore/in the VW. I don't know if I necessarily believe that he harmed them, I just get the vibe it's a false account. Those are startlingly common. I think they probably encountered foul play hitching to or from the concert.

Just wanted to bring up something in terms of Missing Persons. In the past two months, 5 teenagers missing for more than forty years were found in bodies of water inside of their cars (in groups of two and three). I wonder how many missing people simply got into car accidents and are sitting in rivers and lakes. :( Reminds me of the Unsolved segment about two friends who went missing in a Jeep and theories ranged from everything to them having an affair to being attacked by a murderer when in actuality, they'd accidentally driven into a river.

Scroll down the page and the two cases are listed one after another. Cheryl Miller and Pamela Jackson and then Leah Gail Johnson, Thomas Michael Rios and Jimmy Allen Williams
http://www.charleyproject.org/resolved/resolved94.html

In the first case, foul play was heavily suspected and someone was even indicted before the charges were dropped. The girls were on their way to a party when it seems they took the wrong turn and somehow became airborne, their car flipping upside down. Very tragic set of circumstances, but I'm not sure why they would never have searched this creek before.

What I want to know is why on Earth he didn't get heftier jail sentences for the assaults, property damage, and even keeping a woman captive on his property for three days. I can see why they couldn't convict him of his wife's disappearance at that time without a body, but all the other charges should have landed him in jail for much longer than he remained there. How the hell do you hold someone captive for days and not go to jail for it?! If she hadn't reported it, sure, but I wonder if she was threatened into not pressing charges. What a crazy case! The behavior of the police is appalling and Ora Owens is more than likely correct that this was for discriminatory reasons. :( How could they list a four-year-old as a runaway, especially after his mother was beaten and strangled into unconsciousness and had to be hospitalized for weeks? I also find it heartbreaking that she not only lost her son but had to endure threats for years against her other children. It would be great if Mitchell was still alive and the intruder gave him to a family or left him at an orphanage or something along those lines, but with someone that violent and vindictive, his chances really don't seem good.

Strange case where a father disappears during a custody visit, ironically on his way to see his own father.

Definitely seems like the father did it.

This case has stuck with me ever since I clicked on her name
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/smith_tera.html

I'm honestly surprised the media didn't pick up on her story. The media LOVES covering the disappearances of pretty blonde girls you know. I mean, we saw that with Jennifer Kesse, Lauren Spierer, Kristen Smart and etc. So it amazes me how Tera's case wasn't picked up by the media.

In addition, her birthday is exactly a week before mine. She was 12 when I was born. So I was 4 when she disappeared. If she had been born 10 years later and lived in So Cal instead of Nor Cal, I could've seen myself being friends with her had she been a student to my high school. Appearance wise she's similar to a lot of my other friends so it's also a "this could've happened to them" thing in my mind.

Anyways, it's sadly clear that she was killed by Troy. The police should've pushed harder for answers.

Indeed and when I was trying to find any news footage on her disappearance, the only thing I found was probably from a local California news station of that area back in 1998 which I found on Youtube.

One of the comments intrigued me because the user said that everyone in Redding knew Troy killed her and one of her friends had not been interviewed by police. Her friend, Jenny said that she saw Tera running on Old Alturas Road and that Troy was running after her. But cops never questioned her.

I also looked up google pics of Old Alturas Road and Old Oregon Trail. That's honestly not a place I would want to be if I was trying to runaway from someone. Too much grass and not enough houses.

Very, very guilty looking husband and father. Police have searched the property twenty-five times but because it's 10 acres, may have to do many more digs to find the bodies.

Crazy case where a recent university grad leaves a party (and all of his clothes! and belongings) behind and sits on a dock, then runs around naked before vanishing. In the dead of winter in Rhode Island. Friends say he had been acting oddly and depressed before he disappeared.

I remember this one. Here, I actually think there is a chance he survived for some time or may even still be alive. His tattoo looks kind of like a Polish falcon. My husband has a larger one on his chest (he is Polish American).

1997 had some interesting cases:

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/mcchurin_jamie.html

I don't think it was a coincidence that Jamie disappeared at the same time that the car was driving through that neighborhood. I think she might have known whoever was in the vehicle and they forced her into it. I think she must've been raped and murdered.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/smith_vanessa.html

I think Vanessa was abducted. Someone had to know that she walked that route with her mother and they probably took advantage of the fact that she was alone. Her case reminds me of Kristi Cornwell's a bit.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/beers_brittney.html

This is such a sad case. It looks like that family was just bad all around. At first I was going to say that the parents should've told her not to go out that late but at the same time, knowing Brittney was molested by some of her family, she might have just went out to escape everything. A 6 year old can only handle so much. Still, it's bad parenting. No 6 year old should still be riding their bike at 8:30 at night and the man she last spoke to must have done something to her.

I think the person that was strongly suspected of Kristi Cornwell's murder, was also a strong suspect in other similar-type cases. That was on the opposite end of the country though, in the Georgia area.

Brittney Beers reminds me a lot of a recent case I was talking about not too long ago. Can't remember her name, but she was a teenager, I think. Sturgis is right on the Michigan-Indiana border, so she could have been taken to another state within minutes.

Apparently, this week LE has obtained multiple search warrants that pertain to the case. I'm also kind of surprised Holly hasn't been featured on either show, but I guess compared to many of their selections this is a rather recent case. But now it's coming up on three years. :(

I know they were on opposite sides of the country. I just find it similar because they were both out on an evening walk and disappeared. I'm just saying that what happened to Kristi probably happened to Vanessa.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/sikes_shelley.html

This is probably one of the scariest I've read. Basically, a young woman is being followed by two men on drugs and she decides to flip them off. They force her off the road and witness accounts conflict as to whether they helped or forced her from the car. I wonder why none of these people attempted to help! It seems like she met a very gruesome end, unfortunately. Thankfully, both men were convicted.

That one sounds like they hunted this young woman down from the beginning with the intent to rape and murder.

I don't believe she flipped them off. The charley project says she couldn't bend her right index finger. If she was right handed, like most people, it wouldn't be possible for her to do that. Although it did say "obscene gesture" and didn't actually say she flipped them off, so it could have been a different obscene gesture.

IMO, King is just trying to minimize his behavior by saying that she flipped him off, which angered him, and he thinks that sort of justified him running her off the road and puts some of the blame onto her. I find his explanation of how it all got started hard to believe.

She lived 15 miles from work, and her clothing was found years later, about another 15 miles further, near where King lived. She was forced into the kidnappers vehicle just a few miles from work. I think they saw her and targeted her right there in Galveston, followed her for a few miles until they were away from most witnesses, ran her off the road, and abducted her.

Glad they were sentenced to life for the kidnapping, but imo, this was a first degree premeditated kidnapping, rape, and murder.

ETA: Here's an article from a couple years ago regarding their parole (they both come up for parole every 1 to 5 years, depending on what the parole board recommends). According to this, King and Zwarst were drinking on the beach in Galveston all day the day they kidnapped Shelley, which just confirms my belief that they saw her in town, planned the crime, and this had nothing to do with road rage or being flipped off.

Me too. I subscribe to the version of events you described.

It is an interesting testament to human nature that even when the details of a heinous, inexcusable act go public, the perpetrators still attempt to lessen the gravity of it by giving some kind of half-"justification" for what they did.

I don't think you did any thing wrong at all. IMO, it's Charley Project who should be using "allegedly" a bit more in this case when they are relying on a convicted kidnapper's negative claims about how his victim behaved during the events that led up to her disappearance and then making it sound like fact on her missing persons page.

While I was trying to figure out what could have happened to Shelley, I started 'reading between the lines' on that CP page, and came up with a scenario that I think fits better. Especially after I found that article that says the perps were in Galveston all day, making it look like this was NOT a road rage incident that got out of hand.

I know it's kind of a silly thing, getting hung up on whether or not this young woman flipped the guy off, but by CP claiming she did that, when it was apparently not witnessed by anyone except the perp who is trying to make Shelley look bad, is IMO almost like saying because a woman was wearing a short skirt she deserved to be raped.

I like this wording better than what's on CP: King may have been harassing Shelley at the time. He claims she then made an obscene gesture which angered him. In retaliation, he ran her vehicle off the road, injuring her.

Shelley's page hasn't been updated since 2009 and I think the article I linked was from 2011. It would be great if CP would update her page with the info about those perps hanging out and drinking on the beach in Galveston all day. Someone might remember them and their truck in Galveston, and recall if they saw them interacting with Shelley or following her or anything like that, when she was at work, or when she got off work. Even though King and Zwarst have already been convicted of kidnapping her and it's assumed they murdered her, it would still be nice to have any info that points to premeditation rather than the chance meeting through mutual road rage, that King is claiming.

I hope her family gets the answers they need about what happened to her. She was going to school to be a nurse. We lost someone special when the world lost Holly.

I followed this case from the beginning and remember how so many people commenting on the news articles blamed her brother, but it wasn't him! It was the absolutely pathetic, and near criminal way the articles were written that made it sound like her brother was involved.

I've been following the case for a couple of years and while I'm happy they've had a breakthrough, it's tragic that it's worked out as it has. It's really sad she never got to finish nursing school and achieve her goals. :( I think it also hits kind of close to home because she and I were the same age, only a couple of months apart.

I keep checking to see if there are any more updates, but LE doesn't seem to be releasing new info right now, except in terms of the suspect's background. This guy never should have been out of prison in the first place. The sentence he got for shooting his mother in the knee is laughable. People go to jail for longer than that with non-violent crimes!
