wiseguy182 03-23-2014, 10:39 AM Do you know who to contact to have something fixed on that website? She's been missing since 1976, but her photo says circa 1978.
Her name is Meaghan. There is a link to contact her on the Charley Project main page, just click "contact". I do admire that you want to have it fixed, but I feel compelled to mention that the site (while very useful) is rife with spelling errors, typos and such.

Thanks for the heads up. Guess I'll leave it alone, then. I'm slowly going through this thread to read the stories. I always pay attention to the dates, but I don't want to bother anyone over too many mistakes.
WishfulDreamer 03-24-2014, 12:48 AM Another case of LE crying ''runaway!'' when there is evidence to the contrary. This girl was 19--very close to 20-- and her belongings found in two separate dumpsters near her job, some of them partially burned. I understand that LE has a lot of runaways to content with, but this classification borders on ridiculous here. Also, her car was left behind along with everything else.

wiseguy182 05-04-2014, 06:16 AM this one is just downright BIZARRE. It's another one of those really old cases (1980's), but has only been added to the Charley Project within the last few years. As I noted, there are quite a few of those type cases and you really have to wonder what's been going on with them for the last few decades.
I won't even summarize it because it's so strange, but the big questions I have are: 1) how did the inoperable car turn up blocks away, and 2) does the friend who borrowed his car without permission feel like a schmuck after having wrecked it and (perhaps indirectly) causing this whole mess?

I noticed Bunch owned an auto body shop. Sometimes you'll find illegal sales or chop operations going on in body shops, a la Robert Carrado and friends. I know I'm probably jumping from A to X, but that was just something I thought of considering his strange behavior upon seeing the police.

Wow. I really don't know what to say to that. You can't even begin to speculate as to what happened because nothing makes sense. Like you said, if the car was inoperable, how did it end up two blocks away? Even if someone fixed it, who did so and why would they have taken it two blocks away only to abandon it?
wiseguy182 05-04-2014, 12:04 PM I noticed Bunch owned an auto body shop. Sometimes you'll find illegal sales or chop operations going on in body shops, a la Robert Carrado and friends. I know I'm probably jumping from A to X, but that was just something I thought of considering his strange behavior upon seeing the police.
To add to that, if Bunch owned an auto body shop, he'd probably know a thing or two about getting the rental car started again, but apparently made no attempts to do so. I assumed his worry about the police following him might be related to the criminal case he testified in, but why would he worry about being pulled over/checked if he wasn't even driving the car?
Nothing really makes sense here.
WishfulDreamer 05-06-2014, 01:02 AM I wonder if Bunch fibbed about the car being inoperable because he was afraid of being followed by somebody in his own car and thought that if he hitched a ride with a friend, it would be safer. This might explain why he was acting paranoid about being followed-- perhaps it wasn't the police he was worried about and instead somebody related to the criminal case. But if this scenario is true, why on Earth would he leave the safety of his parents' home and wander into the backyard and woods? If someone was really coming to pick him up, would he have done that so nobody would see him leaving his parents' home? This case is truly bizarre.
I wonder what shape the car was in when it was found by investigators.
wiseguy182 05-06-2014, 02:07 AM Yeah. Another nagging question I have is who makes an appointment to meet someone in the middle of the night, like at 3 a.m.? Who could he have possible planned on meeting at the time and under what circumstances? And why would he go into the woods to meet this person?
WishfulDreamer 05-12-2014, 09:29 PM This one is odd. A college student from Kentucky claims that he is going to go to Ohio to see a friend. His car and some of his belongings were found in Arizona, where someone had attempted to push the vehicle over a cliff. Sadly, I think he was carjacked.

Another bizarre case with lost evidence. A girl disappears after visiting her boyfriend, right before she planned to move. Nearly 30 years later, police revealed she'd had contact with them two weeks after vanishing, but they have no idea what the nature of the contact was--it came from two hundred miles away from the vanishing point and in an area that a man she occasionally dated traveled to frequently from the area she was last seen in.

I remember that case. I don't know if I found out about it on charley project or from news coverage or what. She seemed like such a nice woman.
Her husband didn't even do a good job of covering up. How awful that she's never been located.

At least his first name wasn't Brady! ok bad joke.
My gut feeling with this case is that he met with foul play within close vicinity of his home.

A young woman leaves to meet with an unidentified man who she claims does undercover work and has a job waiting for her that involves international travel. She is never seen again. Four years later, two of her teeth and a pin belonging to her are found in possession of Gerard John Schafer, Jr. Schafer is believe to have been involved in the disappearances of multiple Florida woman in the 1960s and 1970s.

If the car was simply inoperable because of a dead battery, it wouldn't be that hard to jump start it from another car and drive off. And I'm sure the friend feels bad, but it's not exactly his fault. I mean, it wasn't like this guy disappeared because he had to use a rental car.
Sounds like he was involved in something shady. Or maybe he was a wintess AGAINST something/someone shady. The idea that he went into Witness Protection is interesting, but why leave in the middle of the night, a few minutes after speaking to your folks?
wiseguy182 05-30-2014, 03:28 AM I am SHOCKED, DIGUSTED AND APPALLED by this one.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/p/pierre_francillon.html
3 year old boy is horribly beaten by his mother and stepfather (30-40 welts). For some reason, they maintain custody of him while awaiting trial. He disappears and it's obvious they did something to him, but they claim he was abducted at a swap meet. They asked the police not to distribute photographs because "they didn't want the media to sensationalize it". They quickly tried to sell all of his toys to finance a vacation they wanted to take. They promptly moved to another state because the "investigation was interferring in their lives" (I found that last part elsewhere on the net). They tried to pin his disappearance on the birth father, but he was quickly ruled out.
Horrible, horrible parents.

Adorable-looking kid. What useless parents, especially in light of their trying to pin it on the boy's own father. Disgusting.

After midnight seems like a strange time for the mother to go out for a pizza (and couldn't she just have it delivered?) Since the parents have been cleared, the babysitter seems suspect, especially since the child disappeared during the short time she was watching him, and she and the other children went unharmed.

Sheesh, that boyfriend! And he's sticking to this story:
Valentini stated that Laiaddee is still alive and goes into his home, takes the money he leaves out for her, and moves his things around whenever he's absent.
Yeah, okay... so we're supposed to believe she took off, leaving behind her purse, a cell phone, two cars, her jewelry, her passport, her keys, her clothes, and all her other earthly possessions, but instead of coming back to get any of those things, she just waits for Valentini to leave, then pops into his place to rearrange the furniture and swipe an occasional 20 bucks.

Las Vegas is a bad area. I wonder how they could have used his ATM card nine times in 2 days, usually there's a daily limit. Definitely sounds like robbery and foul play, so of couse the police think he left on his own accord.

Actually, I think it said the card was used 9 times between Sept 22 and 23rd. Angell was last seen around 10am on the 23rd. So he could have used the card. Maybe he got into some trouble gambling?
It always amazes me when people are last seen looking sick or disoriented, but no one helps them or asks if they are OK.
RSully94 06-09-2014, 09:22 PM http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/bushland_sara.html
Another 1990s case of a young blonde teenage girl. This case has a little more mystery to it than the Tera Smith case I posted a few months ago though.
Sara had talked with a driver of a pickup truck that had followed her school bus home and she got in his car (girl WHY? ) and she was never seen again. Turns out she knew another girl who had disappeared a few months after her. They had 19 mutual friends, who were all men in their 20s and they had gone to parties that they hosted that Sara's school friends knew nothing about.
I think it was one of those men that she went away with. They probably took her to the Trejo area, tried to have sex with her and maybe killed her. If Sara had just seen her boyfriend earlier the day, she probably would not have wanted to be with another guy. I think another guy from this same group of people also killed Crystal.
RSully94 06-25-2014, 02:04 AM Btw, I'm surprised they don't have Lauren Spierer's case file on there. I get that her case was national news, but so was Holly Bobo's case and her case is featured on the Charley Project.

I don't believe it's not profiled because it was national news, if you have some evidence of that, please share. I've mentioned a few times that there are numerous missing persons cases (including quite a few from UM and one from Disappeared) that aren't on CP, I imagine the reasons vary quite a bit -- similar to how Lifetime didn't air some UM segments.

And mine as well. And it would make sense to me if she profiled a less publicized case before a very publicized case if she had limited time to post only a few updates. I'm not saying that is what she does, as I do not know her other than her blog, but in all honesty, that's probably what I would do, as the less publicized cases need the coverage more.
WishfulDreamer 06-28-2014, 07:27 AM This one creeps me out a lot. A young woman is last seen at work (she was a nurse at a casino) shortly before 2 a.m., but no one saw her leave. Someone phoned both her boss and landlord to say that she had a family emergency and would be absent for a while. There was no family emergency. I think she had a stalker. Creepiest of all, she was writing a note in the nurse's log and the note was found unfinished with the pen trailing off the page. It's been theorized on websleuths that she was probably grabbed from behind and taken from the building; there was apparently an exit leading to the parking lot right in the back of the nurse's station. For some reason, people think Zodiac may have done this, but I think it was someone who had his eye on her and planned this whole thing meticulously.
I can only provide the Doe Network link. For the last month, I haven't been able to access the Charley Project on any computer or browser. I wonder if it has anything to do with me living abroad? Seems strange, but I've tried multiple browsers on multiple computers and no dice.

wiseguy182 07-18-2014, 02:52 AM You simply have to check this one out, it is the case of Juanita Bardin:
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/bardin_juanita.html
UM fans may remember Ashley Freeman and Lauria Bible, whose case was profiled on the show. More hardcore fans will remember Stefanie Stroh, who was profiled in a quick run-down of 10 missing persons cases. The suspect in Juanita Bardin's case is Tommy Sells, who is also a suspect in the disapperances of Freeman, Bible and Stroh. But if that isn't enough, there is yet another crazy connection to UM....Juanita Bardin was known to live in the infamous St. James Hotel, another case profiled on UM. Crazy to think a case could have connections to 3 UM segments.

Here's the text from CP for you, Wishful:
Lass was last seen in South Lake Tahoe, California on September 6, 1970. She worked as a registered nurse at the first-aid station at the Sahara Hotel-Casino and her last logbook entry was timed at 1:50 a.m. Lass's car was found parked near her apartment in Stateline, Nevada, but nobody saw her leave the casino.
The day after Lass's appearance, an unidentified male called her place of employment and her landlord to say she would be absent due to a family emergency. Lass was not actually having a family emergency at the time. The caller has never been identified. All of her personal belongings were left behind at her home, except her purse and clothes she was wearing the night of her disappearance.
A postcard purportedly from the serial killer nicknamed the Zodiac implied that he had killed Lass. The Zodiac sent many written messages to newspapers and police claiming responsibility for disappearances and murders, but Lass's abduction does not fit his profile and the postcard was later found to have been forged by a police investigator. The Zodiac has never been identified. He is still considered a possible suspect in the disappearances of Robin Graham and Jeanette Kamahele, however.
Lass's case remains unsolved. She is missing under suspicious circumstances.

WishfulDreamer 07-20-2014, 10:19 PM Thanks, Meg! I don't believe the Zodiac connection, but I think she probably had a stalker or someone who had been targeting her for some time. Still remains one of the creepiest cases I've read about.

Oregon man wanted for questioning in the deaths of his pregnant wife and young child. Wife's torso was found in a river in Washington state in 1987, her legs found in a Oregon river a few days later. Daughter was found in a Washington state river (different one) a few weeks after that. Decades pass before anyone realizes they are missing. Ashok apparently lived in Oregon for 7 months or so before he disappeared. Wife's head was never found.

I found this part really weird, too:
An adult acquaintance of Randy's, one of the last people to see him, found a severed foot on the banks of the Kansas River in March 1989. The foot was not Randy's. Randy's parents say the man drove past their house, going only about 10 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone, on the morning they discovered Randy's disappearance. The individual has since died and it is not known if he had anything to do with Randy's disappearance. A few other people who attended the party that night are now also deceased.

According to CP and the linked blog, he and his mother's car (the car he was driving that night) are both missing.
He was at a party at night that involved alcohol and drugs and the area he went missing is full of lakes and rivers.
Almost always, when car and driver are missing together, they are found in water, sometimes even 40, 50, or more years later.
My guess is that he was leaving the party, probably around the time of his curfew, as was his usual habit, and either due to intoxication or just inexperienced or daring teenage driving tactics, he and the car ended up in a body of water.
(The car he was restoring and left behind, the mustang, is not the car he was driving the night of his disappearance.)
And of course since it was the 80s, they have to throw in the rumor that the local satan worshipers kidnapped and sacrificed him.
I don't think he was kidnapped and/or murdered or ran away. I really do think it's likely this was an accident and they just haven't found him yet.
wiseguy182 07-26-2014, 02:27 AM That's an interesting point about the car Tracy and I overlooked that when I read the article. However, I still think there is a good possibility of foul play here. There's just too many weird things going on with this case that makes me think something sinister happened that night. I find the part about the cave to be frightening. Reportedly, the search into local rivers was massive.
It can't be proven Randy was drinking or using drugs. There was lots of that going on at the party, but by all accounts, Randy wasn't among the people using them. I think it's possible (heck, probable) somebody spiked his drink with something and that's why he started acting slightly irrational and also why he wouldn't immediately realize what was wrong.
I did find a bunch of articles on the net. Here is another one (the site may require you to answer a few questions before you can seen the full article) that says somebody saw a body "hanging in the caves in cold storage".
http://www2.ljworld.com/news/1990/nov/20/s_father_still_pushing/
Another article that reports someone taking pictures of the caves, which included unusual markings on the walls, tire marks, fire rings and other signs of apparent cult activity. So perhaps there is a Satanic connection here

They think she may have come home to her father's body, rather than thinking he may have been involved in her disappearance. Sad case.
TracyLynnS 08-06-2014, 08:58 PM They think she may have come home to her father's body, rather than thinking he may have been involved in her disappearance. Sad case.
Unlike the authorities (and what little we have to go on in that CP writeup) I actually think it's more likely that she fought with her father, she ended up dead (intentionally or accidentally), he moved her body, then later called her in as a missing person. Guilt or fear of being caught could have caused him to take his own life.
The other scenario sounds too weird to me. If she argued with he father and left for the night, then returned a few days later to find his corpse (and who actually commits suicide during the first few days that their teenage daughter is a missing person!? He wasn't hoping to find her, giving him something to live for?), she would not likely know if it was murder or suicide and she was only 15. Her mother lived nearby, why not contact her mom if she came home and found her father like that?
CP also says that there's no indication her parents abused her, but another paragraph says that she had many problems with her parents.
At age 15, and in the 90s, she already had the three dot tattoo on her hand. Could that be gang related? Could she have argued with her dad and gang member friend killed him for her so she had to disappear? CP also says she changed schools frequently. That's fairly unusual from someone so young unless there are valid reasons they didn't mention.
What little research I did says that the three dots is usually worn by hispanics and means My Crazy Life, but I could have sworn I recently read that it can be gang related.
Anyway, very strange case. Could be a lot of different scenarios there.
wiseguy182 08-07-2014, 02:14 AM Agreed that the Lourdes Gruart one is bizarre.
Here's another one from that year. I feel so sorry for this boy. Such a hard life at such a young age. If he met with foul play, that just worsens things.

soilentgreen 08-07-2014, 07:15 PM http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/consuegra_edward.html Strange case, there's not that much information out there, some sites mention that the contract Conseugra was working on was arranged by former CIA deputy director Frank Carlucci and that Consuegra's wife may have played a role in his disappearance. It's hard to determine what information is credible or not. It certainly would have been a disappearance for UM to profile.

I got the same vibe here. Even if he was severely depressed (which wasn't noted) or had other issues, taking his own life when his daughter just went missing is highly suspect. And if she walked in on the body, wouldn't she freak out and call the police/loved ones? I wonder why police believe this theory over the dad being involved.

44 million is quite the discrepancy. That reminds me a lot of another case. This one was actually profiled on one of the rarer episodes of Cold Case Files. I just watched it a few weeks ago from my collection. I have no doubt Muns was murdered. I doubt his body will ever surface.

There seem to be numerous discrepancies in the Karen Wells case. If her plans were to drive to the friends house in New Jersey, then why were they meeting in Pennsylvania? And what was the alleged criminal activity? Most people would say the small amount of pot isn't that big a deal.

I'd have liked to have caught that episode. Some of the questions that I have about Consuegra's case, who was involved in working on that contract? What was the procedure for reporting a discrepancy? I'm not big on conspiracy theories, and his disappearance could be unrelated to his work, but if there was indeed an established discrepancy, someone close to that account had to have far more information about it.

There's an article (http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2009/04/evidence_sparse_in_15yearold_d.html) that mentions the theory of drug trafficking. People told investigators that Wells was coming to visit her friend to help her out with some kind of trouble; the friend later stopped talking with police.
Her Doe Network profile states that Wells called the friend and said she would be unable to reach New Jersey, so they arranged for the friend to come see her at the hotel the following day. What's really odd, besides the extra 700 miles on the odometer, is that a time line pieced together from witness accounts and telephone logs placed her as far east as Schaefferstown in Lebanon County and Bernville in Berks County before she apparently doubled back to Carlisle.

I'm not famililar with those locations. It would be nice if someone would do up a map (like they used to do on UM) that traced the route they believed Karen took.
Personally, I think the friend is suspicious. If Karen called the friend at 7 p.m. and said she was going to get McDonald's and go to bed, then why would the friend knock on her door at midnight when Karen is obviously asleep? Most of the known info on this case is coming from the friend, and I would take everything she says with a grain of salt.
Here's another interesting case. Woman vanishes and suspect is none other than the state's then sitting governor. Said governor was scandal-plagued and recently got out of prison after a decade spent there. Here's a link to the casefile

WishfulDreamer 08-11-2014, 04:53 PM http://charleyproject.org/cases/a/akers_ruby.html
Another nursing home disappearance with a creepy twist. Her condition at the time of her disappearance makes simply wandering away a little harder to believe. She only "may have been" in the early stages of Alzheimer's and her loved ones say she simply had moments of confusion. She was only in the home because of a shoulder dislocation. 10 minutes before vanishing, she had asked a nurse to remove stitches in her fingers. She was also well-known in the neighborhood and never seen once outside of the nursing home. The sinister phone calls add a disturbing potential, but of course could be a hoax.
wiseguy182 08-12-2014, 07:25 AM Yes, I recall reading about Ruby Akers recently. It was another one of those cases that was added in the last several years. I do know there is nursing home abuse out there so perhaps the calls have some truth behind it. (Shady Pines?)
I was recently discussing with one of my regular trading partners this case, which is on an episode of Dateline I recorded.

WishfulDreamer 08-12-2014, 05:17 PM (Shady Pines?)
 Shady Pines, Ma!
But seriously speaking, yes I think this case looks more like foul play/accident than it does her wandering off. If she was lucid enough to ask for stitches to be removed and only in there for a dislocated shoulder, it makes little sense that she would have walked away. She was never diagnosed with anything. Most of the cases on CP about elderly patients at nursing homes seem to involve wanderers. Not this one.

PolyesterSuit 08-19-2014, 09:54 PM I can't say this is a "favorite" Charley Project file because it feels like a weird term for this topic, but regarding the Tara Calico case I can't stop thinking about the girl and boy in the photo. Even though it's now believed that Tara was killed in NM and it was a cover up, that doesn't explain the photo - somewhere out there two other children needed help. I think about it almost every day. I recall reading elsewhere that a similar photo was found near a construction site in California, which makes it even more chilling. Sometimes I think that photo deserves a file of its own. Not to mention the girl on the beach in Florida who is also not believed to have been Tara... but then who was she? *shudder*

wiseguy182 08-24-2014, 03:04 AM this one sounds positively horrifying. Woman abducted and it sounds like she was beaten and held captive for over a week. Authorities had barely missed catching the perp the day before he abducted 2 other women. I don't know what it is about Overland Park, Kansas, but there have been more than one serial killer there. Thankfully they eventually caught the guy, but none of the bodies have ever been found. Sad and frightening case.

wiseguy182 08-26-2014, 05:54 AM Pretty baffling one: 30 year old woman goes missing. At first glance, the husband seems guilty, but the 2 sons publicly supported their father and said they last saw their mom getting into a car with an unidentified woman. Husband is convicted, but evidence was entirely circumstantial and body was never found. Years later, one of the sons dies in his college dorm room with no cause of death ever determined.

sad case. Here is a link with a little more. The family was ripped apart and left nearly bankrupt after Derrick's disappearance. The tree they were getting wasn't even for themselves, it was for an elderly, disabled neighbor. It took 5 hours for police to respond because they didn't want to be disturbed during their Christmas banquet.

Not sure if I believe Milligan is responsible for this one, though the guy is definitely a creep (I find the fact that he worked in a children's psychiatric ward to be disturbing). I think exposure seems more likely: they found a crude shelter, and since Derrick was carrying a hatchet, I don't know someone would try to abduct him under those circumstances.

17 year old Karen Spencer drives car on interstate in Ohio with sister-in-law. They argue about plans for her to move in with the sister-in-law and her husband (Karen's brother) in their Florida home. Karen reportedly abandons the car (even though *she* was driving) and it's the middle-of-the-night, cold, and on the friggin' interstate!!! Suspicious man claims to have offered help, but he knew about the pair's argument BEFORE any of the events even transpired. TracyLynnS 09-07-2014, 12:55 PM Check this out.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/brewer_tabitha.html
Tabitha Brewer and her boyfriend Nicholas Travis went missing in April 1998. Travis's body was found four months later in a shallow grave in a yard where the prime suspect's dad worked. Brewer has never been located, but her and Travis's personal effects and ID were found burned in a dumpster a few days after they went missing, and near the location where Travis's remains were found a few months later.
He is 34 year old Brandon Howell, the guy in this current case: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2746537/It-doesnt-look-good-Family-elderly-Kansas-City-couple-brutalized-car-thief-left-three-dead-asks-prayers-pair-cling-life.html
He was 18 years old in 1998 and was friends with 16 year old Brewer and 19 year old Travis. He was with them the night they went missing.
In the current case, he is suspected of shooting three elderly people to death and beating an elderly couple nearly to death. They are in their late 80s and are on life support.
He was incarcerated in 1999, on convictions of kidnapping, aggravated assault, attempted aggravated robbery, and animal cruelty committed during a home invasion robbery, unrelated to the Brewer/Travis case. His earliest release date was set for November 2010.
Even though there was some evidence against him in the Brewer/Travis case, in March 2009, he was tried and acquitted.
He was released in from prison in 2011 to obviously do what violent repeat offenders do.
I wonder if, now that he can't be tried again for the murders of Brewer and Travis, if they will plea bargain with him on this triple homicide and try to get him to tell where Tabitha Brewer's remains are located.

The Merle Vanderheiden case has always interested me. Yes there is the Children of the Underground connection there but what piqued my interest is that Vanderheiden had some ties to intelligence work. Much like William Bradford Bishop, she may have been able to disappear quite easily due to information she gained while working for the United States government although that is purely speculation.
Either way with Francis Walsh deceased I would say the chances of locating Vanderheiden or her daughter probably is pretty slim.

It almost seems like they got intercepted going from the museum to their car. I'm leaning toward them being abducted/killed due to the danger in the area rather than a hiking accident. Two experienced hikers would not leave their hiking materials in their car nor does anything indicate they would have run away. Perhaps while preparing to hike they stumbled upon one of these plantations and were killed like the two other hikers that year had been by growers.
88keys 09-16-2014, 03:24 PM what
He was disgusting. He also made her lose a lot of weight because he liked her skinny, and made her get breast implants and wear slutty lingerie. She had finally got up the nerve to leave him when she disappeared. It's a really sad case.

But why would experienced hikers even take that hike? It was dangerous, and if I'm reading this correctly, it was late in the afternoon when they set out. Wouldn't they want to start early in the morning, before dark?

That is a good point. I think they may have been planning to come back to do the hike the next day. I don't think they even attempted it, considering that their belongings for such an excursion were left in the car.
As for why they would do the hike at all? Some people just love being challenged, even when it comes to dangerous situations. I used to believe that was why they vanished, but I think the evidence points to them only planning, never actually going. It seems to be they were probably ambushed while looking at the area. Perhaps like the hikers killed by growers, they saw something someone didn't want them to.

Having lived in Hawaii for a few years as well as being a hiker, I can only say that being up and at it before the sun comes up is something that seems to be valued really only by fishermen over there. The DLNR does take its sweet time opening up gates and barriers to hiking trails in the morning--if they EVER get around to it.
Not a particularly interesting case, but notable that her husband sued her on The People's Court over a wedding ring; the episode aired on the day she went missing. The video is online (gotta search for it!). It's really kind of creepy watching her in the video knowing she went missing not that much longer after filming. This would have been a good episode for Disappeared.

I remember that one and thought that would have made a good case for t.v. too!
I just learned the other day that Bea Arthur once appeared on Judge Judy as a witness. Could you imagine those 2 in an argument?
wiseguy182 09-20-2014, 04:43 AM Re: Stephen and Jenny Sun-Reisberg, it's interesting to note that their casefile says they were last seen on September 9, but the program director of the museum says he saw them AFTER that date.
Also, I'd like to know more about this female moaning. Did the person make any attempt to help or find the lady? And did he also here a male moaning?
BlueGalexy 09-23-2014, 05:11 AM Most of the Charley Project cases that have really grabbed my attention are ones that occurred more recently.
Barbara Bolick allegedly disappeared from a hiking trip with her companion standing approx 20 feet away. Apparently he turned around to admire the view for less than a minute, yet when turned back, Bolick was simply gone. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/bolick_barbara.html
Jerry Michael Williams apparently went missing from Lake Seminole during a solo duck hunting trip. He is allegedly the only person missing from the lake whose remains were never found, and was initially presumed to have been eaten by alligators. Facts have since come to light that make this theory unlikely. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/w/williams_jerry.html
Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos both disappeared under mysterious circumstances. What is noteworthy in these cases is that the party known to have seen both men last is the same person. Not only that, but former Deputy Calkins gives nearly identical accounts of the circumstances under which both men went missing. These disturbing coincidences cost the deputy his job.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/w/williams_terrance.html http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/santos_felipe.html
wiseguy182 09-23-2014, 05:48 AM ^ those last 2 cases were on Disappeared and I definitely think foul play was involved with both.

Yeah, this one seems like it should have an obvious solution, but apparently, her male companion has been nothing but cooperative with investigators and they have flat-out never considered him a suspect in her disappearance. In his defense, I think a guilty person would attempt to dream up a much better story than "I turned around for a few seconds and then she just disappeared".
BlueGalexy 09-23-2014, 06:10 PM I used to really enjoy that show wiseguy, and those were two episodes that certainly stayed with me long after seeing them. As I haven't seen any new material from the program in quite some time, I've had to resign myself to the conclusion that it was canceled. I've actually given up on ID altogether as their recent trend in programming just isn't to my taste. But I digress... I completely agree with you about the likelihood of foul play. There are just too many glaringly obvious red flags regarding both cases.
Robin, the Bolick case just doesn't seem to add up on any level IMO. At first I was just positive that her hiking partner was involved, but as I researched the case further, I started ending up with more questions than anything else.
Another Charley Project case that got to me was the Brian Carrick disappearance. I realize the case seems to have somewhat of a resolution, but reading through that summary gave me a serious case of the chills. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/carrick_brian.html
BlueGalexy 09-23-2014, 06:26 PM One of the cases I've never been able to find on Charley Project is the Dale Kerstetter case. I first learned of it years ago on UM and it has stayed with me all this time. I wonder why it isn't on the CP website? Or have I just never looked in the right place?
wiseguy182 09-24-2014, 02:31 AM @BlueGalexy: Disappeared occasionally has specials on, although I think the regular series has been cancelled. A show called "Last Seen Alive" seems to be its de-facto successor.
I admit much of ID's newer programming, such as Sinister Ministers, doesn't appeal to me, but the network is still pretty good for reruns of 48 hours, Dateline and 20/20.
Re: Brian Carrick. Sad Case. Kind of reminds me of Michael Adams, another Charley Project case that involved the (presumed) death of a young man who worked at a supermarket. Bummer the original jury was 11:1 in favor of conviction, but hopefully this Mario fellow will get convicted the second time around.
Dale Kerstetter isn't on CP. I believe the owner has occasionally added UM cases sent to her by posters on this forum, so perhaps this case is just waiting for that. ;)
phillipscurve 09-24-2014, 03:57 AM I apologize if this case has been posted before. Another one with a very guilty looking husband, but with a lot of "confusing developments" to say the least, and one of the longest case summaries that I have ever found on CP:

I believe I posted this one a long time ago, but no need to apologize. :) It's great to bump up any case and discuss it. It's definitely one of the longest cases on CP and I agree the husband looks very guilty. It's a shame they've never found Kathleen and that he's out of prison.
Wiseguy, was Kathleen's friend Najamy interviewed on 20/20, by any chance? I really admire how far she went to find her friend and hope she's doing well today.

BlueGalexy 09-24-2014, 05:44 PM After browsing through this thread and further exploring the CP site, I have to say that the Jost case is seriously the strangest thing I've read on there in a good long while. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/j/jost_marie.html
Well that and the Bier case of course. Bigfoot got her? Really?? I'm sorry, but what a bunch of BS! Perhaps the only thing more ridiculous than the suspect's story in this case is the fact that he walked free. Talk about adding insult to injury! :( http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/bier_theresa.html
The Zoltowski case, which I believe was also referenced by a previous poster, just plain makes me sad. It seems to me that this situation was completely avoidable. The decisions that were made by that chopper pilot just make so little sense to me. Not only does the pilot refuse to bring Zoltowski back to civilization, he also makes the decision to take Zoltowski's supply pack with him, in effect separating the victim from any resource that may have still been of assistance. I just don't understand that. Is that the SOP when dealing with a hiker in distress? Perhaps a poster with more knowledge in this area could shed some light.

Yes, Gilberte Najamy, as well as several other of Kathy's friends were interviewed. It was actually a re-broadcast of a story from 2001, although John Quinones filmed new bumpers for it recently, so I have no way of knowing how she is today.
I was really struck by how beautiful Kathleen was. Just a beautiful woman with a really huge smile. I think Robert Durst should consider himself very lucky to have spent so little time behind bars for his various murders and other crimes.
The episode didn't get around to it, but he's also a suspect in a 4th murder (!!), that of Karen Mitchell. The guy's a serial killer (and I do think he murdered Susan Berman as well).

WishfulDreamer 09-30-2014, 03:13 PM Because we were talking about real estate agents being in danger in another thread, here are some chilling cases.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/g/gabriel_julia.html
This one had a conviction, but sadly he's been released. It sounds like the motive was possibly sexual assault, judging by the ripped pants.
I posted this one earlier, but a young woman was showing a home to a man who wanted to see it again. She wasn't a real estate agent, but was trying to sell a house.

Very unsettling and creepy.
wiseguy182 10-01-2014, 11:42 PM Huh. I just noticed the Tim Moreau case, which I mentioned earlier, was profiled on a new ID series called "Dead On Arrival". They also profiled the Rebecca Schaeffer case.

BlueGalexy 10-02-2014, 01:11 AM Though sadly there isn't much mystery in what happened to Heather Teague, I find it to be one of the more chilling CP cases. It most certainly has some Rear Window elements to it.

Ben Padilla Jr went missing under bizarre circumstances. Notably the 727 he was working with is missing as well. Strange case...

TracyLynnS 10-02-2014, 07:39 PM What in the world. I thought MH370 was the only large plane to go missing and never be found.
Why would Air Angola have the passenger seats of this 727 removed and fit the plane with diesel fuel containers? Were they in the business of delivering fuel?
In Heather Teague's case, that dead suspect's wife was allowed to plead the 5th during the grand jury hearing and refused to answer any questions about Heather's abduction? And then she just walks away free?
Obviously she knows what happened and was involved in at least part of it, otherwise she would have no reason to be worried about "testifying against herself" by answering those questions. I wish they would have investigated her further. No wonder Heather's mom sued.

This article goes into greater detail about the case. Apparently, this plane was leased to be part of a business detail that involved delivering fuel to the diamond mines, but the deal completely fell apart, so the plane just sat around at the airport for nearly two years until Padilla and a crew of mechanics were hired to do rebuilding work on it. The whole situation just sounds like a huge mess:
http://www.airspacemag.com/history-of-flight/the-727-that-vanished-2371187/
Needless to say, there was initially some major national security concerns since a plane filled with fuel would be a hell of a weapon for terrorists on a suicide mission. Strangely, it also looks like the FBI closed the case in 2005, but have never offered an explanation.
88keys 10-03-2014, 03:04 PM Heather Teague is a local case for me, and I think I brought it up earlier in this thread. It's scary as hell, and so frustrating. Like you said, we pretty much know what happened (there is even a witness!), but no justice. :(

Spouses cannot be forced to testify against each other. Not sure if that applies when one spouse is dead. As bad as it is, the wife does have the right to plead the 5th.

Yep, I was at the "Freed Ryan Ferguson" Facebook page tonight and Ryan was plugging this episode because Kathleen Zellner is representing Mario Casciano. I haven't watched it yet, but I know that the one witness against Casciano has recently recanted and that blood from another suspect was found in the same cooler where Carrick's blood was found. I know Casciano and his family always maintained he was innocent, but it looks like it might actually be true.

The Leah Occhi case has always bothered me. I hate to say I suspect the mother but it's a lot more than just the fact that she failed 3 polygraph tests.
As the detective stated in the investigated discovery article/program:
Whoever the perpetrator was, they had a very small time frame to commit this crime which according to police with the amount of blood/hair/tissue found they believe she was killed in the house.
This was her first time all alone according to her mother. So the perpetrator (whether familiar with the family or not) would not have been able to pick up a pattern when she was alone because this was apparently her first time by herself.
Her mother last saw her at 7:40-7:45am when she left for work and when she had dialed 911 by 9am. She says she was worried when Leah did not answer the phone. So, if she called 911 by 9am, I can assume she was home by 8:50-8:55am at the latest.
This leaves about an hour for this crime to be committed.
The police say there was clear evidence someone tried to clean up the blood in the bathroom but no towel or rag was found. According to the police a random assailant would not have wasted the time cleaning up the crime scene then taking the towels.
Also, if this was for an adduction / sexual assault type crime, why was she brutally killed in the house? Doesn't sound the typical MO of someone looking to kidnap a teenage girl. Yes, she could've put up a fight but the house wasn't in disarray and there was no sign of forced entry.
If it was some male she had been familiar with, they would've gained her trust to enter but then overpowered her or threatened her with a weapon. I don't see why such brutal force that would've cause that amount of blood (they believe it was a head wound) would've been necessary.
If he had just been some crazed murderer, why take the body and why try to clean up the scene? He would've had no inclination of when someone would've come home. (but again no forced entry)
Also, the mother said she left work because she was so worried. Her drive home is about 15 mins yet her mother (leahs grandmother) lives just 5 minutes away from their house. It says she called the grandmother to check on her but she left work anyways. She was the first one to come home not the grandmother. Now this panic was all because she didn't answer the phone within a very short time frame. She was 13. The storm was downgraded to just a tropical storm with only power outages and downed trees. So, why didn't after a few calls, the mother, just ask the grandmother to go check on her? She only lives 5 mins away. Yes I realize this was the first time she was alone, but the kind of panic in such a short period of time seems a little uncalled for especially when the grandmother could've just gone to check on her and was closer.
Leah's stepfather (who was living separately) has passed the polygraphs and didn't live there at the time. According to police he was always very cooperative since the beginning. He has now passed away. Her biological dad lived states away but was very close to Leah and he too passed the polygraphs and is very cooperative.
The family car was tested but they said given that it would be very common to find leahs clothing fibers/hair in the trunk or other areas of the car, they couldn't use that either way.
Anyways, Id hate to think a mother could do that but the story just never sat well with me. Plus the 3 failed polygraphs on top of the story, its just odd
wiseguy182 10-10-2014, 03:42 AM One of the scariest ones I have ever read was about a family (mother, father, one-year-old son) by a duo who would kidnap, torture, and murder victims. The family made the mistake of putting an ad out with their address. Horrifying! And there were others still never found on top of those who were:
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/d/dubs_deborah.html

That's a pretty famous one. Charles Ng and Leonard Lake are/were 2 of the sickest people to have ever walked the Earth. I have an American Justice episode on this, as well as their Biography episode. They actually videotaped their acts and AJ showed small snippets of the videotapes (though not any of the most sickening stuff for obvious reasons). I remember Lake stating that he wanted an "off-the-shelf" sex parter whom he could rape when he wanted to and put away when he wasn't using. There was a small, windowless room in the sex slave compound and I believe he used that to store his rape victims when he wasn't using them. Utterly revolting. They showed a small clip of someone, I believe it was Deborah Dubs, tied to a chair asking Lake "Why are you doing this?", and Lake replying "Because we hate you." Sickening to even think about. I hope Lake has been burning in Hell for the last 30 years and hope Ng heads in the same direction someday. How anyone could torture little children and do the other things they did is beyond my comprehension.
wiseguy182 10-10-2014, 03:46 AM Btw, I know we were dicussing ice cream truck drivers a bit awhile back in this thread and how they have a tendency to be a bit off. I should point out one of the most famous (or infamous) ice cream truck drivers was Michael Larsen. This was the man who memorized the board patterns on Press Your Luck and milked the show for over $110,000, which was a daytime winnings record for many years until the Price is Right broke it a few years ago. It was one of the most famous moments in game show history. His episodes are one of the most requested items in my trading collection of any genre of t.v. show.
WishfulDreamer 10-15-2014, 01:34 PM Apparently a second person of interest has been named in the Lyons sisters case. Authorities are now searching property of a convicted sexual predator and his uncle and think they are close to cracking the nearly 40 year old case:

And none of these witnesses tried to stop it or call the police? Sadly, the two suspects were let off. Curiously, one of the witnesses is also a suspect in his wife's own disappearance a decade later.

Sounds like a rough establishment. I find it suspicious the bar name was changed to "Nobody's Business". If nothing else, the employees should have done more. I think the man that killed her might have had some connection to the first guy that accosted her that evening. I also believe the witnesses were threatened. And I do believe Shon Pernice killed his wife.

wiseguy182 11-06-2014, 06:05 AM this one was profiled on an episode of Dateline I have called "Secrets in the Mist". The husband seems guilty, although it's one of those frustrating cases where there's no body, evidence or witnesses. I was sort of put-off as most of Carol's family believes he is innocent and/or don't want to see him punished, he ended up being convicted despite the lack of evidence.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/l/lubahn_carol.html
This one has all sorts of weirdness attached to it. 80 year old man disappears from his home, dogs trace his scent to end of driveway. He had been depressed (and possibly suicidal) about his wife's death, but some think the daughter (whom was living with him at the time) was responsible as they fought constantly. Authorities searched the home a few hours after his disappearance and found a dead dog in the freezer. The daughter claims innocence, but was later found guilty of shooting a woman in the head in a church, killing her. The daughter wrongly believed the woman was competing with her for the pastor's affections and was stupid enough to write the event on her calendar, which helped seal her fate. The daughter seems like she's not the brightest bulb, so I'm not sure she could have hid the body (which has never been found) and get away with it.

This one is especially creepy to me because I live right next to Torrance. It's a very safe city for the most part. I took a course at that college in my mid-teens, too, over a summer. Anyone else get creeped out when CP mentions their hometown/places they go all the time?
On a side note, as safe as Torrance is, it's where Christopher Wilder abducted his only surviving victim-- from the mall that I frequently visit.
Edit: One of his only surviving victims. She was the only one he released.
WishfulDreamer 11-06-2014, 03:02 PM Another case that bothers me. This one isn't discussed much online. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/h/hernandez_cynthia.html
She really wanted to see the original Omen movie and ended up going alone. CP says it's unclear whether she entered the theater, but online articles state her mother talked to employees who remembered seeing her. Her car was parked in a manner her mother found strange and unlike her to do. I think the odds are that she was grabbed leaving the theater. Maybe someone saw her and realized she was alone and used that opportunity to abduct her.

I go to the local college now and it's weird to think that she was likely murdered in the vicinity close to where I've gone to school, taken dance classes, and gone to special things. The creepier part is to think that her remains are probably buried somewhere in my city but no one could figure out where unless by chance or if her husband tells authorities

Interesting one. I could see voluntary disappearance or foul play on that one.
wiseguy182 11-09-2014, 07:22 AM I remember this one. Young man who was a college student was driving home one night and got his car stuck in the ditch. He phoned his father, but gave him the wrong location. He left his vehicle and started walking, the last his father hears from him is when he says "oh *@!#" and the call terminates. The father tries to call him back several times, but gets no answer. I would guess foul play based on that alone, but I could just as easily see exposure or drowning.

wiseguy182 11-13-2014, 02:20 AM Dateline did an episode which was partially about this case.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/r/reitler_tricia.html
Here's some info Dateline had that wasn't on the CP page. A prosecutor, who had just successfully prosecuted a man named Jimmy Keene for drug dealing and was sentenced to 10 years, offered to get his sentence vacated and his record wiped clean if he would go into a mental institution for criminals where Larry Hall was staying for the murder of Jessica Roach and get him to confess and reveal where Tricia Reitler's remains were. It was described as being one of the most dangerous places for criminals, filled with psychotic murderers. If he ever got in trouble, he had 2 emergency contacts: one was the staff psychologist, another was an FBI agent outside the institution who would be in there within hours of his phone call.
Keene spent five months in the institution, slowly building a friendship with Hall. His efforts were hampered somewhat by the infamous mob kingpin "The Oddfather", who frequently walked the streets in a robe and acted nuts all the time in the days before his sentence. The Oddfather and the other mob members liked Keene and wanted him to spend time with them. Keene and Hall's friendship grew when Keene beat up a guy who changed the television channel when Hall was watching his favorite program -- America's Most Wanted.
Keene found a map Hall had created, in which there were numerous thumbtacks in Indiana, Illionois and Wisconsin, all believed to be places where Hall dumped bodies. The CP page mentions only a few of his presumed victims, but the map appeared to have a dozen or more thumbtacks, implying he had many victims.
Keene got very close to getting Hall to reveal the location of Leiter's remains, but suddenly snapped and could no longer pretend to befriend a child molester and murderer and called Hall every name in the book. For his safety, Keene had planned on getting out of there immediately, but the staff psychologist had just went on vacation and the FBI agent didn't get his phone message, meaning that his 2 back-up plans both went kaput.
Keene spent the next 2 weeks in solitary confinement as an employee of the institution reprimanded him for his verbal tirade against Hall. During this time, Hall thought the whole thing was a set-up concocted by the prosecutor. Eventually though, the staff psychologist returned and Keene was let out of there.
Despite the great lengths he went to and risking his own life, Leiter's parents criticized him for getting so close and blowing it.
Jediknight1823 11-14-2014, 03:19 AM Eventually though, the staff psychologist returned and Keene was let out of there.
Was there a Dr Crane or Dr Quinzel there, because holy crap that dude was in a real life Arkham.
wiseguy182 11-14-2014, 04:42 AM This one was on an episode of Cold Case Files I just watched (one of the few remaining ones I had yet to see) and is definitely one of the most horrifying that show has ever profiled. The CP page doesn't state it, but the episode stated that one of the ladies shot in him in the head and watched the blood literally SQUIRTING out, then decapitated him with a chainsaw and rolled his head down the mountain. They wasted no time in doing things like withdrawing all the money from his account and burning down his cabin to collect on insurance. Very sad case.

This one is a chain reaction of crap. Young 16-year old girl is apparently killed during horrific circumstances. A year later, her boyfriend goes missing and it's possibly related to her disappearance, although his case is a bit more mysterious as there's also a possibility he committed suicide or his roommate murdered him, or possibly he owed the wrong people money (he was addicted to heroin). Shortly after the boyfriend vanishes, his roommate committed suicide for unknown reasons. Definitely one of the more complex series of cases

wiseguy182 11-16-2014, 01:08 AM I just watched an episode of The Investigators from my collection that profiled this case. The episode was called "Deadly Returns". Definitely the most horrifying part is where the wife was found in the freezer. Sad case as they had a lot to live for and came from a really nice family and were offed by a greedy individual with possible mob connections.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/benedetto_christopher.html
Koblan did in fact pawn at least one of Janette's rings in New York City. The show talked a lot about the great lengths the investigators went to solve the case. They had suspected Koblan of staying at a motel a mile from Christopher and Janette's residence the day of the murders. One of the investigators went to the motel. They didn't have a computer system, and all their guest records were on registration cards kept in a back closet. The investigator went through boxes of them for hours as they were unorganized, and finally found one that he suspected was Koblan's and it turned out to be that it was. He used an alias, but gave his actual street address.
Despite that and other evidence, the investigators didn't feel they had enough evidence to go to trial, until one of them had a chance encounter on a flight with a prosecutor, who asked to look over their paperwork. He gave them some advice and the case went to trial and Koblan was convicted on all charges. I highly doubt Benedetto's body will ever be found as it's undoubtedly in the Atlantic Ocean.
ChrissySnow 11-17-2014, 03:13 AM Wow!! Some of these are chilling.
The Michael Taus case is very strange, as they have never stated who he was supposedly going out with, and if there even WAS a date.
With him, I suspect either foul play or a walk away.

I agree. It's not a good idea unless you know the area. Generally, Santa Clarita is actually a really safe city, but there are certain parts that you're better off not being around late at night. I would say that Castaic would be one of those places as it is more desert like compared to other parts of the SCV.

I just read about this one recently and thought the same thing! It's such a tragic case and very upsetting that Henry was never found and justice never served. I can't believe that a mother's alibi is enough to prevent Davis from being looked at more, especially when neighbors saw him right at the door on the day of the disappearance. The police may not have wanted to drop the case, but they damn well should have provided Henry with some protection.

Davis only spent a few months in jail. Not nearly enough.
One interesting thing: the Ingham County jail is located in Mason (where I live), which also contains the county seat. Mason is the only city in the United States that is the county seat of a county that also contains the state capital.

I don't think that one has been mentioned on this thread, though we have talked about it a bit in a few other threads. I wonder if the hunter was telling the truth about finding a skeleton. She'd been missing about 11 years. The chances of the skeleton being intact are pretty slim. How would anyone have found out that this guy saw the remains and get out to the site quick enough to remove the skeleton before the police got there? And WHY? In 1982 we didn't have DNA, it was 11 years after she went missing, so any evidence linking a killer to the site would likely have been gone. The killer actually stood more of a chance of getting caught by going back to remove the body. By doing that, he or his car could have been seen at the site or disposing of the bones, or he could have left behind footprints or other evidence.
The skeleton was removed from the site, but were the clothes the witness observed still there? And the human body has tons of tiny bones. If the body was moved, how could the person be sure to get all of the bones so that the police could find no trace of the skeleton? That's over a decade of leaves falling on the remains and weeds growing up around the skeleton and dying every year. IMO, it would be really hard for a perp to get rid of all the evidence in that situation.

There were some sightings that suggested that she was still alive (at least for some time) after her disappearance, so it's difficult to pinpoint exactly when she died. My personal guess is that she didn't die the day of her disappearance.
The CP write-up said the hunter wasn't able to re-trace his steps, so that indicates he wasn't able to find the skeleton or the clothes.
Being that the police apparently never found the exact spot where the skeleton was, it can be concluded (if the hunter's story is true) that the perp got there and moved it. Killers tend to keep a close eye on where their victims are kept.

I kept missing that part about him being UNABLE to retrace his steps and was misreading it as HE WAS ABLE to retrace his steps and show the cops the site. I even read it a couple times to be sure. I guess old age is getting me quicker than I thought.
I wonder why the hunter didn't mark his path. I've been in the woods and seen old reflectors that look like thumbtacks that hikers or hunters pressed into tree trunks to mark their paths.
If this guy didn't have a piece of clothing that he could rip up to flag the path, or a roll of toilet paper or something, he could have broken twigs on the trees along the trail or marked the tree trunks with his knife.
Maybe he was freaked out, panicked, and was thinking more about getting the heck away from a body dump site, so didn't think to do that.

As I understand it, much of northern Maine is woods, brush, etc. I think he happened on it by chance and it could be very difficult to find again.
wiseguy182 12-19-2014, 04:21 AM Shall we say this woman (Susan Reinart) wasn't the brightest bulb on the tree and it led to her 2 children's murders:
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/r/reinert_michael.html
The case of the Reinarts was profiled on the show Murder By The Book, and it's definitely a weird one. Some info from the show that's not on the CP page:
-2 other individuals disappeared with the Reinarts, although they weren't discussed much and I don't know much about them.
-Immediately upon being released from prison, Jay Smith said he wanted to bomb several buildings including the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office. They let this guy out for 17 years?
-this case was the inspiration for Lisa Scottoline to get in to authoring crime books.
-3 other teachers at the school had information on the case, but withheld it for a long time as they were close to Bradfield. After police started revealing to them how much they knew about Bradfield's guilt, they cracked. Incidentally, the school they taught at was a prestigious school in Merion, Pennsylvania: site of the General Wayne's Inn, where another murder took place!
With all that being said, I find the part about the picture of the stone possibly marking the gravesite to be fascinating as well as disturbing. It remains unidentified and hopefully someone can identify it someday.

This poor woman wasn't reported missing for 38 years!
http://charleyproject.org/cases/b/baird_nancy.html
Another case like Deborah Poe's. Ted Bundy is a suspect, but the crime doesn't seem to fit his usual M.O. However, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that he requested assistance and she went outside with him.
wiseguy182 12-29-2014, 03:28 AM Wishful, I think that 38 years may be a record. I know a lot of times they don't get reported for a while, but damn. 38 years has to take the cake.
This one may be the strangest and most baffling of all time
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/cole_rose.html
Not only is it not known when she disappeared (somewhere between 1972-1973), but there are lots of possibilities of what could have happened to her. Did she runaway and live life somewhere else? Did she runaway and Synanon found her and she was beaten as a result and die of her injuries? Did she die of the kidney infection?
Did she end up homeless and die of starvation or exposure or whatever? Was she taken in by someone that did her harm?
As if all that wasn't enough, here is a link to an article that says she may have been alive as late as 1982, 10 years after her disappearance.
http://whereaboutsstillunknown.wordpress.com/2014/03/20/rose-cole/
I wish I could read the letters she sent to her family, but the print is very small. Apparently, she wanted to come back home and felt she was an unwanted child. :(
Here is another article. This one is about Synanon and the strange goings-on there. There are other articles about it on the net. If nothing else, you will want to read the part about the rattlesnake towards the end.
http://paleofuture.gizmodo.com/synanons-sober-utopia-how-a-drug-rehab-program-became-1562665776
It should be noted Synanon still has a number of hardcore defenders to this day, despite the controversial (to say the least) practices there. Buckwheat from the Little Rascals was another celebrity that visited Synanon.
To add to all that, a person claims he is 99% positive that she is deceased and took a photo of her dead body on film that was developed just a few years ago. Here is a link to that:

Yep.

LooksLikeCRicci 12-30-2014, 01:15 PM It really is an interesting theory. I hadn't considered it until it was pointed out to me. Now it seems kinda obvious. People from that "religion" tend to go missing or end up dead under strange circumstances quite a bit....

Thanks for those links. I've been looking on Websleuths and apparently Rose's sister-in-law typed up the letters for members (she summarized).
Here is Rose's last letter. I tried to preserve her writing style, meaning every comma, and hard space. But gave up after a while.
Letter details:
It was written on her birthday Dec 23, 1972 but mailed Feb 3, 1973 because she didn't have a stamp
A year has passed since she left to California
She describes her life in living in the streets
She can sleep ~ nightmares
Her letters have not been answered, this one is address to her Mom, the other ones where to her siblings
She talks about a baby. Billy had a baby at 19 with his girlfriend at the time~ not married ~ a lot of stress around that at home (Billy the oldest child, step brother ~ everyone including my husband loves BIlly best ~ he stood up to his stepfather Jesse Joseph and protected the other kids from bullies at school ~
Norma and Opal are the youngest ones, when the judge sentenced her, he said that he couldn't sent her home because there were two small kids (Pose & Norma) that she would put at risk
She asks for Norma's forgiveness (maybe from the letter to Pose)
She doesn't like her looks, she feels she looks like her real Mom, Willie
she talks about poor and rich people, it may be a stretch but maybe people with money ~ able to pay for prostitution?????
She want to be love, and feels guilt which is normal under the circumstances but she talks very nicely about her Dad. I find that strange! Given the fact he is the only one with access to the letters, maybe he had a heart after all.
This is a stretch but he might have contacted her after this or any other available letters that we don't know about to appear in court in Michigan.
I'll keep poking around that forum and see if I find anything else of interest. I definitely agree with your sentiment that this belongs on a show. Renewed media attention would certainly help!
wiseguy182 12-31-2014, 04:19 AM Random question: Do you just surf CP's website, wiseguy? I'm trying to figure out how you find some of these cases... :)
I tend to go in chronological order (the website also has options for alphabetical and geographical), although I do skip around a lot. I went through all of them at one point (but I know she's added new ones since then), now I'm going back through them. It never gets old. I was in the 90's again, but lost my place (somewhere in 94) and started going through the 70's again. The 80's are my "favorite" (maybe not the best term for it). :)
Jediknight1823 12-31-2014, 10:38 AM Interesting theory. Like Synanon, that other group also doesn't believe in solving people's ailments and mental issues with medicine.
It's not a theory, it's just that there are a lot of similarities between them.
wiseguy182 12-31-2014, 02:58 PM For some reason, this case isn't on Charley Project (though someone named Justin suggested it last year), but it is still an unsolved missing person case.
It's the case of Jenny Soo Chin. She worked with her lover Margaret Barbera at a New York City jewelry store. The owner of the jewelry store, Irwin Margoiles, received lots of money illegally and Barbera was his accountant and cooked the books. Margaret Barbera was keeping documents hidden at Jenny Soo Chin's house, but Jenny Soo Chin felt uncomfortable about it, and arrived at Margaret's place of residence to give back the documents. Later that night (in 1982), Barbera was murdered while leaving work. She was shot while entering her car. The shooter (Donald Nash) war parked in a van right next to the passenger side. (he wanted to park next to the driver's side, but that space was occupied, so he stuck a toothpick in the driver's side keyhole so that Barbera would be unable to enter the car that way and was forced to use the passenger side).
As he was loading Barbera's body into his van, 3 CBS technicians happened to be walking to their cars after their shifts ended. Nash shot all 3 of them dead. A 4th witness went undetected, or he likely would have been shot dead as well, which would have brought the death tally to 6. The witness started to leave the parking ramp, with Nash following close behind. The witness alerted the ticket booth operator as to what happened, then left. Nash also left in the opposite direction, then led police on an interstate chase and was eventually captured. Margoiles and Nash were both convicted and are serving long sentences. Margoiles wife only got a few years, though she reportedly hated it as she was used to living in the lap of luxury. The go-between for Nash and Margoiles was lawyer Henry Oestericher, who was granted immunity for testifying against both Irwin and Nash.
Jenny Soo Chin was 46 years old at the time of her disappearance and is presumed to have met with foul play the day she vanished.
I became familiar with this case on an episode of Dominick Dunne's Power, Privilege and Justice. Jane Velez-Mitchell was interviewed for the episode.
Nash later murdered a guy in prison for unknown reasons with a razor-encrusted board.
LooksLikeCRicci 12-31-2014, 05:25 PM It got quite a bit of media attention, but I always wonder what happened to Brian Shaffer (http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/shaffer_brian.html).
I'm pretty sure Brian Barton (http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/barton_brian.html) was profiled on Disappeared.
Another interesting case (http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/brownlow_dale.html)out of Montana. Suicide or exposure to the elements? Hard to say. I get a Noah Pippin vibe when I read the details...
wiseguy182 01-02-2015, 03:20 AM this one has always stuck with me.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/stanberry_farren.html
Teenager leaves home in Oregon to travel around the country. 9 months later, his regular contact with parents ends and he left his possessions in his hotel room, while still owing rent.
I also found this article about the case. The author claims that the "International Hotel" where Farren was last known to have been according to the CP page was non-operational at the time he went missing, and he probably was staying at the "National Hotel" after finding the address for that hotel listed with Farren's name in the California Unclaimed Property Database, where he left behind money in a bank account. The author speculates that Farren may have been part of a group of gay guys living in the hotel at the time.
http://whereaboutsstillunknown.wordpress.com/2013/03/31/farren-stanberry/
Based on that, I do have to wonder if Farren may have went off to live a gay lifestyle as San Fran does have a high gay population. I wonder if he visited any other areas or states as San Fran isn't too far from Oregon. I think perhaps he ran into foul play.
I also wanted to state that while I do admire Meghan G. a lot for maintaining the entire Charley Project site, I think perhaps it's too much for one person to handle and she should consider delegating responsibilities to others. Much of her free time is spent reading books (she reads roughly one book every two days) and the backlog of updates and such tends to get high. I think if other people were allowed to add cases, updates and photos, it would very beneficial to the site and its service. I'm sorry if that seems a little harsh, but that's the way I feel.

Agreed in full. I am a big fan of hers, but I worry about her welfare. If you read her blog, she's had a number of personal problems and it seems to have taken a toll on her to work the entire site herself. I can see why she's reluctant to hand over any control to others, but I think it would be best for her and the site to at least have an assistant. I've seen quite a few typos and there is a definite backlog, like you said.

Glad to see this one's been added. Didn't the segment state that Kerrigan had thousands, rather than hundreds, of dollars? I remember it being a really suspicious amount. Also, I had no idea there was another missing man in the same area. I doubt they're related though, as the other man seems to have had some personal issues that were upsetting him. I'm still convinced that Kerrigan was directly targeted, as opposed to Father Rivera. There's something fishy about the amount of money he had, his transfer, and the obvious violence he encountered.

On a different thread, there was a poster who pointed out A LOT of the information covered on the CP page that was left out of the UM segment. I agree that Kerrigan was directly targeted, most likely by someone from Plains, MT, where he transferred from. There were allegations of sexual misconduct, I believe. And yes, he had several thousand dollars on him, according to UM.

Yeah, he was troubled, but the family may be even more troubled. There was some debate as to whether the family really believed the imposter was Nicholas, or if they knew he wasn't and brought him into their home to get the police off their backs. I'm still scratching my head wondering how they thought it could be him given he had a different hair color, different eye color and a European accent.
UMLongtimefan 01-19-2015, 03:14 PM I just do random 10-20 random look ups on the site every weekend usually by geography. I find enough cases until I get "creeped" out and then I have to stop.

I'm the same way, but I often go by chronology. For some reason, 70s and 80s cases tend to freak me out the most, probably because of the high frequency of hitchhiking and lack of cell phones. But there are plenty of earlier and later cases that are scary, of course. Later cases are a testament that people can still go missing even in the era of cell phones and security cameras.
I'm sure this one has been posted, but the Jennifer Kesse case is one that illustrates that. Very unfortunate timing and luck of the likely abductor. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/k/kesse_jennifer.html
And of course speaking of cell phones: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/d/drexel_brittanee.html
This one especially scares me because her cell phone kept pinging off towers, showing that the abductor was driving her away into a secluded area. The Disappeared episode on the case talks about it and it gives me chills to think about.
RobinW 01-19-2015, 06:33 PM Always been fascinated by this case. Guy travels to his farm to mow the lawn and is last seen riding on his ATV. He then completely vanishes, leaving his truck, trailer, lawnmower and all his possessions behind. The ATV is later found a mile away in an area Hearon normally never visited, but he is nowhere to be found:
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/h/hearon_michael.html
This is one of those missing persons cases where there's absolutely NOTHING to go on! It's possible someone killed him while he was out riding his ATV and disposed of the body, but there's zero evidence of foul play and Hearon just seemed like a regular guy with no known enemies or personal problems. It's like he just vanished into thin air.
ChrissySnow 01-22-2015, 06:50 AM RobinW - thanks for that post. It is chilling the way he disappeared without a trace. I don't get a suicide vibe from this, and a walkaway is unlikely, since he seemed close to his family and had no issues. (that we know of.)
I just can't imagine what happened to him.
Do you have any theories?

I'm leaning towards a "wrong place at the wrong time" scenario. Hearon is riding through the woods on his ATV and accidentally comes across something he's not supposed to see, such as a drug deal. Some unknown perpetrators kill Hearon, dispose of the body, and possibly plant his ATV at a different location in order to throw everyone off the trail. This case gives me vibes of UM's Signal Mountain murders case where three ATV riders were senselessly murdered for no reason, but if someone made Hearon disappear, they knew how to cover their tracks.

I think I mentioned it far back in the thread. This is one of the saddest cases I've read about. Asha is only a few days older than me, so she comes to mind a lot. I want to believe that she's alive, but the fact that her belongings were found wrapped in garbage bags screams foul play. I think she did run away (possibly because of the story she had been reading in class), but probably planned on returning. I was adventurous at that age, but walking on the highway at 4 in the morning would have scared the heck out of me, just like it does now for different reasons. The thought of her going off the highway "into the darkness" gives me chills to think about. I do wonder if she planned to meet with a friend, and the friend backed out and was afraid to say anything because he/she feared getting into trouble?
I've read a lot about this case on various forums, and the main question people tend to ask is, "Why did no one pull over when they saw her walking?" I think that someone did--the person who abducted her. :(
wiseguy182 01-23-2015, 09:23 AM I'll post this one so you can read it now, because it might be solved soon. The car containing Dana Null and her boyfriend has been found, as expected, in a canal. Their remains haven't been found yet though. They disappeared 36 years ago.
Police bungled this one badly. (I get tired of saying that). I would imagine the boyfriend lost control of his vehicle either due to his emotions at the time, or because he was barefoot.

WishfulDreamer 01-23-2015, 02:55 PM Police bungled this one badly. (I get tired of saying that).
Same. I agree entirely. Authorities believed they drove into one of the many canals...and then clearly didn't thoroughly check the canals. This is infuriating. A man doing maintenance work comes upon the car in the canal, but the police, who were pretty sure the car was in one of the canals, didn't find it decades ago?

The case is very strange. Other belongings were found in the entrance of a tool shed. I agree that part where she walks off into the darkness is terrifying.

I was thinking the same thing. There are no photos of the boyfriend, which is weird. Meghan said the number of cases she can't profile because there are no pictures is mind-boggling, TONS of cases.

Looks like they have found some remains after all.
The number of reported missing persons is mind-boggling. Add the number of unreported ones or ones Meghan can't profile because there are no photographs, and it just gets crazier.

Her disappearance was featured on an episode of TV series "Sensing Murder" back in 2004. Basically the premise of the show is 2 Psychics with no prior knowledge of a case are asked to investigate and present their findings.
The Episode is on the forbidden site under "Sensing Murder - Last Train home" well worth a look.
Murkywaters 02-11-2015, 06:19 AM http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/t/teague_heather.html
Definitely one of the scariest disappearances I've read about. Heather Teague was sunbathing on a river bank in Spottsville Kentucky when she was suddenly abducted at gunpoint and dragged by her hair into the woods near the river. The person who witnessed this was spying on her through a telescope. This case has became rife with conspiracy theories, An attorney contacted Heather's mother in 2008 and told Sarah to ''give her heather God, Heather had been sold'' In 1999 a individual knocked on Sarah Teague's door with a picture and told her that Heather was killed in a snuff film. A video of a woman who resembled Heather was on a rape website and apparently pretty much died on the film. The prime suspect in the case committed suicide.

It's heartbreaking to read about a child who gets taken away from his parents. only to end up in a foster home where is he further mistreated.

RSully94 02-27-2015, 02:36 PM I also wanted to state that while I do admire Meghan G. a lot for maintaining the entire Charley Project site, I think perhaps it's too much for one person to handle and she should consider delegating responsibilities to others.
I agree. The last update was February 17th. It gets frustrating to see the updates come so slowly.
RSully94 02-27-2015, 02:43 PM This case is sad because it could have been prevented if Crystal had just not been such a stubborn idiot and got gas on the way home

wiseguy182 03-13-2015, 03:58 PM this is a bizarre one with numerous possibilities. Definitely one of the weirdest parts is the car being found after his disappearance with the windows rolled down despite the fact it had been raining, then the car disappeared and was never found. I'm not sure I can entirely eliminate the hitchhiker, and the dad asking to have his son declared legally dead only a year after his disappearance despite the uncertainty is very weird.
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/h/haynes_jon.html
Interesting that the hitchhiker either came forward with information or was located by law enforcement, considering their transient lifestyles. Nederland is 17mi SW of Boulder and if he's traveling from San Fran that leads me to believe he met with foul play of some sort, and never made it into Boulder at all. The cult theory is interesting but kinda doubtful to me.
Laura77 03-19-2015, 11:23 AM The disappearance of Mitchel Weiser and Bonita Bickwit has always touched me. Sean Munger has written about them in his blog and a website has been set up to remember them. For those who don't know, they were 2 teens who went missing from Watkins Glen, NY in 1973 after a Summer Jam concert, but it's not known specifically if they even made it to the concert.

wiseguy182 04-05-2015, 06:51 AM There's some good (although not great) news in the Erica Parsons case, which I mentioned a little while back. Last month, her so-called parents have both been sentenced, mother Casey to 10 years, and father Sandy to 8 years. Should have been more, but it's better than nothing.
The sentencing judge said the case disturbed him more than any other he's ever encountered and called the parents "morally bankrupt". Get 'em!
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/p/parsons_erica.html
wiseguy182 04-06-2015, 06:52 AM Oh my God! I found this article on Erica Parsons detailing some of the abuse she suffered at the hands of her "parents". She was forced to stay in a closet, given dog food to eat, forced to stand at a wall while her siblings opened gifts, and hand her fingers broken. A relative testified that the last time he saw her, she was "zombie-like".
Now that the parents are going to prison, I certainly hope and expect they will get to know what it feels like to be abused...child killers don't fare too well in the prison population.

You'd be amazed at the number of cases on Charley with poor pictures. She recently did a list on her blog and it was quite long. Heck, there are a ton of cases she can't profile because there is NO picture.
It's important to note picture-taking is a lot more common nowadays, due to the readiness of cell phones. And with a few exceptions, the owner of CP only uses photos from the year of the person's disappearance.

Authorities believe he drowned, but the family doesn't buy it. His sister Cindy, who was 11 at the time he vanished, keeps a blog. I honestly don't know what to think about it. She and her family apparently not only believe he didn't drown that day, but that he's still alive because of "sightings". I have to wonder if this is just a family that can't accept that their loved one is gone. What do you think?

what...the....hell?! That is one of the WEIRDEST cases I've ever heard about. The CP blurb is short, but the blog is really long with all sorts of stuff (the phone calls, the sightings...). It requires some digging, but the younger sister says 2 months after his disappearance, they were at a wake of some sort and 2 older female relatives took her into the restroom because she was crying. One of them said "We need to tell her" and the other one got really mad and defensive.
There were a lot of sightings, and the ones I read about were actually by family members. They tape recorded the phone calls (maybe this was in the day before answering machines), and hired a private investigator, but he was working on a suspended license and they had to take him to court to get their money back.
Maybe she's making all of this up, but it makes you wonder if somebody did take him. I feel really bad for her as she's obviously never gotten over it, nearly 40 years after his disappearance. This would make a good case for UM.
The blog had 5-6 articles on his disappearance, but I could only make out one of them. I'm betting voluntary disappearance is unlikely since he had just gotten his learner's permit, his first job and a girlfriend he was crazy about.

Apparently, Cindy believes that Rogelio's then-girlfriend Betty and his friends know what happened to him and aren't saying much, if anything. She says she was also close friends with Betty's younger sister Linda, who was her age. I can't find the exact post in the blog, but apparently the suspicions caused a rift in the friendship because at the end of one of the blog post, Cindy writes of her friendship with Linda (I'm paraphrasing here):
"I was also very good friends with Betty's younger sister Linda, until that day in 1975."
I think there's definitely more to this. Like she says, if he drowned, why did the body not wash ashore?

wiseguy182 05-11-2015, 01:17 AM I remember this one and it was also on an episode of Forensic Files I just watched, called "Ring Him Up"
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/melendi_shannon.html
To elaborate on some of the points:
-Hinton had done a lot to draw attention to himself as a suspect. During the softball game, he was the umpire and frequently turned away to look at Shannon mid-pitch, and blew a lot of calls as a result. The pitcher was getting frustrated with him.
-Hinton had once raped a 14 year old girl in Ohio after tying her up, and his wife at the time walked in on the incident. He was only sentenced to 4 years for it, and only served 2 years before getting out. Hinton moved to the south immediately after his release.
-In regards to the women's clothing that was found buried on Hinton's property, there were many shirts and Shannon's parents stated none of them belonged to her. It was theorized Hinton probably had at least one more, if not, several more victims whose remains have never been located (he probably burned them too) and he has yet to be linked to the crimes.
-authorities initially viewed Shannon's disappearance as voluntary, stating she had just gotten back from spring break and suggested she was probably sleeping with various men she had met during the time and didn't want to be located right away.

I pray that one day they can find Erica and give her a proper burial site.
These monsters have lied through out the whole investigation. Even went on the local news here talking about Erica in the past tense. No one does that unless they know that person is no longer living. They continued to get money for Erica's care after she went "missing". That is why they are sentenced to time for fraud. They are sorry excuses for human beings.

Agreed. I'll never forget reading "A Child Called It" for the first time. Even though there have been many allegations that it was untrue, it's a compelling read and a haunting remind that many children are facing the same thing, without outsiders realizing what's happening to them. It's sickening and impossible to fathom.
Erica's "parents" are sick people and many other expletives I won't spell out here.

LooksLikeCRicci 06-02-2015, 03:26 PM So true. I can only hope that people who abuse children are "taken care of" in prison.
Totally happens. It's not an urban prison legend. I've represented men who have been accused of molesting children and I've watched how other inmates treat them. It's insane. I'm not sure if it's implemented everywhere, but our local detention facility actually separates the folks accused of sex crimes from the general population. They do this for the accused sex offender's safety.
As a defense attorney, I heard other inmates threaten my clients who were charged/convicted of child molestation. It was done with me sitting right next to the client in open court. It's quite frightening to hear. On the other hand, being a parent myself, I can understand the outrage of the other inmates.
