Girl Meets World Officially Picked Up by Disney Channel: Find Out What Cory and Topanga Are Up To!

by Tierney Bricker

World, prepare to meet Girl!

Girl Meets World, the buzzed-about reboot of the beloved '90s series Boy Meets World, has officially been picked up to series by Disney Channel, the network announced on Monday. "I am grateful to everyone at Disney Channel for the opportunity to reach my favorite audience, which has always been kids," creator Michael Jacobs said in as statement. "Girl Meets World is a new show for a new generation that will be rooted in the same kind of honest, comedic storytelling about coming of age and the importance of family and friendship that made Boy Meets World so popular."

Girl Meets World, which centers on Cory (Ben Savage) and Topanga (Danielle Fishel) as parents to a young girl named Riley (Rowan Blanchard) will begin production this summer in Los Angeles and is eyeing a 2014 premiere on Disney Channel.

NEWS: Ben Savage on Girl Meets World: We're not trying to do a Boy Meets World reunion!"

Of the series' pickup, Adam Bonnett, Executive Vice President, Original Programming, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, "Boy Meets World and its story of adolescent self discovery resonated with an entire generation of tweens. In the same way audiences fell in love with Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence, we look forward to introducing our viewers to their daughter Riley Matthews in Girl Meets World and building a memorable connection with a whole new generation of fans."

Set in New York City, Girl Meets World will "tell the wonderfully funny, heartfelt stories that Boy Meets World is renowned for, only this time from a tween girl's perspective," Disney Channel stated in a press release. Riley also has her very own Shawn (Rider Strong) in the form of her quick-witted best friend Maya (Sabrina Carpenter).

The network also revealed what Cory and Topanga are up to these days: Cory is a history teacher at Riley's middle school, while Topanga owns a trendy afterschool hangout that specializes in pudding.

I am looking forward to it. Now that Good Luck Charlie is ending I need another family sitcom to watch.

Exactly what I was trying to get across in the GLC thread!!! Every day people!! LOL!! We need more shows like this!!
I am super psyched about this show and can't wait until it premiers!!
I think this will help fill the void Good Luck Charlie will leave.

I never really thought the Disney Channel made sense for this. They were looking to get kids sure, but in picking that network, they probably drove away a lot of adults who were Boy Meets World fans growing up.
