Why does Jack even want to continue being with Vicky if she doesn't want to marry him? Unless I'm missing something, why would you as a man still want to be around a woman who's emphatic about the fact that unlike you, she doesn't want to get married? The whole thing, to me just makes Jack look and pardon my language for a moment, p-whipped. The two of them simply put, were never going to be on the same type of wavelength.

It isn't like Vicky is the first girlfriend or romantic relationship that Jack has ever been in. I would probably get it more if this was Jack's first real or serious relationship and he's being really careful to not "screw it up". I also get the idea that Jack realizes that he's getting older and maybe he needs to settle down sooner or later, but why with this girl?

What's exactly so special about Vicky that he's even willing to put up with her father, despite the fact that he's an a-hole for no apparent reason other than he doesn't want his unmarried daughter to be living with a man. I mean, when Jack was living with Janet and Chrissy, I don't think that their fathers (and keep in mind that Chrissy's dad was a reverend) had much of an issue with them living with Jack. Quite frankly, I don't know if I really want to be with a woman if I don't like her dad and I think that he's going out of his way to ruin my life.

The in-law, in this case the potential father-in-law, being difficult toward the adult children's suitor is a very common theme for TV series and films. In this case, being a sitcom, it's no surprise that Bradford is an exaggerated character. A good example is when Jack indicates to him he's having temporary trouble with impotence: Bradford laughs in his face. That wouldn't fly for a drama series.

Bradford's disapproval was placed at the core of the series -- without that, it would've been a very different show. So we can try to analyze all day "why" Jack puts up with it, but the writers saw it as the main source of their material and made it ongoing.

People continue to comment as to why Endora is so mean to Darrin on Bewitched -- the series ran with that and I don't see much point in being puzzled about it decades afterward. But the difference is that Bewitched was a big success, so we can't point to that animosity and say it was detrimental -- while in the case of Three's a Crowd, there was no success.

I went back and looked at Dave Sundstrom's video where he presents the five reasons for why he believes that Three's a Crowd failed big time and somebody in the comments section gave their own two cents for why they did not like that particular sitcom much:

1) Vicky was both miscast and poorly written. There was no reason to cheer for them as a couple. The audience interrupts the writing as: She came in and broke up the group to the point Jack has zero interaction with old world even though he still operates the same business in the same city; she isn't likeable at all and constantly tears down Jack, she rarely tells her dad off or has Jack's back to the point his old roommates and even landlord did.

2) Having your main characters more at odds than coming together makes for bad TV.

3) The original show was in decline - a successful spinoff might have worked for the Ropers had it been written a million times better (yet another spinoff where you aren't really cheering for anyone and its more about conflict), but not when the show was at 20th and in decline.

4) Not only was it against The A-Team but the whole genre was in decline at that time. Som the show was in decline, and the sitcoms were being overshadowed by crime fighters.
