The Oakland Coliseum opened in 1966 for the Oakland Raiders, and the A’s arrived two years later and occupied it for 57 years, until John Fisher pulled them out of town after the 2024 season.

To an extent, it remains open for business. But for how long?

Well, with Oakland’s final major pro team gone — the Sacramento (Las Vegas) A’s are back in the Bay Area to play the Giants at Oracle Park in a three-game series beginning Tuesday — it appears the Coliseum’s days are numbered.

“The stadium is likely to cease operating at the end of the year because of the cost,” Henry Gardner, executive director of the property’s joint powers authority, told The Standard. “We were obligated to keep it operating until February. We had already obligated ourselves to events beyond February. We have since obligated ourselves to events through December of this year. We have made no commitments beyond December.”

Oakland’s Coliseum was once one of America’s most iconic sports venues. Today, it stands largely abandoned, costing the city millions and raising serious questions about its future.

After nearly 60 years at the center of American sports, the Raiders, Warriors, and Oakland A’s all walked away, leaving behind an aging stadium that many now see as a growing urban and financial liability.

A new Las Vegas mega project is underway, this new MLB stadium will replace the Oakland Coliseum. An engineering sport stadium marvel that will have the largest window in the world, what are the construction challenges behind this giga project?

Bally's never planned to open a new casino-hotel on the Las Vegas Strip along with the Athletics' stadium in the spring of 2028, company representatives told gaming regulators Thursday.

Dan Reaser, a lawyer representing Bally's, appeared before the Nevada Gaming Commission for licensing and registration matters.

During the appearance, Commissioner Brian Krolicki asked for an update on the resort that Bally's plans to build on the site of the former Tropicana.

Krolicki said he believed the "valley side" of the project was supposed to be completed by then as well, but Reaser and Mira Mircheva, Bally's chief financial officer, said that it's actually a retail, entertainment and dining plaza that they'd like to open in time for the A's arrival.

The Oakland Roots Soccer Club is entering into its final stretch of games with the Oakland Coliseum as its home venue. On Thursday, the team announced that it will not return to the venue for the 2027 USL Championship season.

The club, which is still in the process of securing a venue for next season, said it “looks forward to celebrating its final season at the historic Oakland venue.”

The team moved into the Coliseum ahead of the start of the 2025 season, following two seasons playing on the campus of California State University East Bay. The team said it would be relocating next season as the Coliseum was no longer viable.

Just in time for the move to Las Vegas, the Athletics are adding Mark Cuban and Falcons minority owner Rashaun Williams to their ownership group in what represents the first deal for Harbinger Sports Partners, the sports-focused private-equity firm launched last May.

The size of the minority stake, price paid, and team valuation were not disclosed. The A’s have reportedly been trying to sell a minority stake since 2024. Forbes values the A’s at $2 billion, placing them 18th out of 30 MLB teams.

In addition to Cuban and Williams, Harbinger is led by former MLB CFO and EVP Jonathan Mariner and Steve Cannon, who previously served as vice chairman and CEO of Falcons parent company AMBSE.

When Harbinger announced its launch last May, the firm said it was looking to raise $750 million for its first fund, and that it would target minority stake investments in North American sports franchises.
