Why did CBS suddenly start getting funny with the scheduling come the last season? If I have my facts straight, CBS pulled the show in February and brought it back for the series finale, then dumped the four previous episodes they didn't show during the late summer. So Niles and CC were newlyweds before we even saw him propose and Fran comes home with the twins before we watch her give birth!

So reading page 1 it looks like the nanny's ratings went down before fran and max.got together. I get confused if season 6 was the additional year they gave them.if they married fran and max or they were already Greenlit for a season 6 and if getting them married did well they would get a 7th season.

Why did CBS cancel The Nanny 20 years ago (2019)?

Quote:
Question: Why did CBS cancel The Nanny 20 years ago (2019)?

Multiple reasons, with ratings being the most prominent.

Some things:
  1. Despite its proclaimed “popularity”, the series was never higher than sixteenth in the ratings for any of its six years on television. - During its final season it plunged to 84th, and the decision was made to pull the plug.
  2. Fran Drescher - While she can be good in small doses, her nasally whine becomes irritating after too long. Her comic timing also isn’t that great which is why. (along with her health issues) Drescher has never been as successful as she was on The Nanny.
  3. The series is pretty bland - The setups were predictable, the jokes were an odd variety of bland and men-spirited, and their delivery wasn’t the best. While American Daniel Davis was effective at pretending to be an English butler, everyone else struggled with their parts and things never got better.
  4. The series was “Pretty White” - Even for CBS in the 1990s, the lack of minorities in more than occasional roles was noticeable. Since they decided to set in New York City, which arguably is the most diverse city in the United States, it becomes even more noticeable. Unfortunately for The Nanny, there were a plethora of wealthy White families on every other network and so there was no reason for it to stand out from the crowd.
  5. The series never created a “breakout character” - One of the reasons that many series are successful is because a minor character or a third or lower lead becomes a center of focus and an additional reason for fans to watch the series. While that could have been Daniel Davis (Niles, the butler) or Lauren Lane (C.C. Babcock) the program never worked itself in that direction which, considering that Drescher and her husband were its producers, seems to have been a intentional series of actions. Basically you were supposed to watch The Nanny to see Drescher’s antics and if or when you lost interest in that, you probably lost interest in the series.

So low ratings is what actually killed the program.

However frankly it seems to have been an “assisted suicide”.
