I have been watching this series and it's a nice show to have on as a background. I didn't really follow it when it first aired because I wasn't in its target demographics (I wasn't married or having children yet, but I was older than the kids in the family).

As to the question as why it's not a top draw 1990s comedy series, I think it was overplayed immediately after the show ended. I think people who faithfully tuned in every week felt like- I watched that show steadily for 6-7 years, change the channel because I have already seen all those episodes.

I would sometimes be visiting friends and this show (and other TV shows) would be playing with people frequently going to and fro. Once in awhile, someone would pause and ask "Has Tim blown up the house yet?" and someone would say, "Keep watching, it's coming." People already knew that was part of the show back then.

As I have mentioned, the show has some funny moments, but this isn't a show where the viewer has to pay a lot of attention to understand what's going on. There are shows where you must hit the pause to understand the premise of the episode (or rewind when you leave the room).

I hope that I'm not deemed a basher of the show because I see both the strengths and weaknesses of Home Improvement.

I mean, multi-camera sitcoms today, are not shot on video tape anymore. There's really no reason to do so with the advent of digital cameras.
Nonsense. Whether a show is videotaped or shot on film doesn't make a difference. Friends and Seinfeld's popularity is not because they were shot on film. But biffbronson is right you don't like Home Improvement much, if at all. You constantly post stuff bashing Tim Allen and the show. Your earlier comment about it being just there with Wings, Just Shoot Me, and Caroline in the City says it all. Caroline especially which was a timeslot hit, only lasting two more seasons as the Monday anchor. Home Improvement still does well in syndication on LAFF, you just are really biased against it. You don't like Tim Allen's politics which don't come into play on Home Improvement. Last Man Standing was his political sitcom.

My point about videotaped sitcoms like Home Improvement aging worse than those shot on 35 mm film is that videotaped shows have a low resolution. It's much easier to remaster an old filmed sitcom like I Dream of Jeannie for example, and make it look "modern" and high def than say something like All in the Family (despite otherwise being a "younger" show than I Dream of Jeannie) and its standard definition video format.

The bottom-line about Friends and Seinfeld is that whether you like it or not, they are still part of pop culture and have an enduring legacy. I don't exactly know for sure if that's the case in 2023 going on to 2024 for Home Improvement.

Somebody also argued elsewhere that while Home Improvement legitimately a funny sitcom, it's likely "forgotten" now because it unlike other sitcoms from the '90s, it didn't break new ground, wasn't a pop culture phenom, and no one from it became a major, lasting star. Also, Home Improvement could be very saccharine and could fall into the "very special episode" vein.

Looking at it now, it is really boring and dated.
