I have been watching this series and it's a nice show to have on as a background. I didn't really follow it when it first aired because I wasn't in its target demographics (I wasn't married or having children yet, but I was older than the kids in the family).
As to the question as why it's not a top draw 1990s comedy series, I think it was overplayed immediately after the show ended. I think people who faithfully tuned in every week felt like- I watched that show steadily for 6-7 years, change the channel because I have already seen all those episodes. I would sometimes be visiting friends and this show (and other TV shows) would be playing with people frequently going to and fro. Once in awhile, someone would pause and ask "Has Tim blown up the house yet?" and someone would say, "Keep watching, it's coming." People already knew that was part of the show back then. As I have mentioned, the show has some funny moments, but this isn't a show where the viewer has to pay a lot of attention to understand what's going on. There are shows where you must hit the pause to understand the premise of the episode (or rewind when you leave the room). I hope that I'm not deemed a basher of the show because I see both the strengths and weaknesses of Home Improvement. |

Somebody also argued elsewhere that while Home Improvement legitimately a funny sitcom, it's likely "forgotten" now because it unlike other sitcoms from the '90s, it didn't break new ground, wasn't a pop culture phenom, and no one from it became a major, lasting star. Also, Home Improvement could be very saccharine and could fall into the "very special episode" vein.

Looking at it now, it is really boring and dated.
