My one gripe with American Life is how every few weeks it seems they backtrack and air an episode like "Love Is All Around" or "Today I Am A Ma'am" out of nowhere when the show should be in the second season (close to the third by now). Of course, I've noticed that this happens with Newhart, too, so it's not just an isolated case with our Mary!!!
Another possibility is that the episodes are speeded up so they can show more commercials without editing. But without seeing the broadcasts, I would say it's most likely edited. Time the episodes (without commercials); if it's close to 25 minutes, it's probably not edited; if it's closer to 22 minutes it is either edited or sped up.

This could explain why shows like I Love Lucy, The Golden Girls, Three’s Company, and now Friends have been better at living on from generation to generation.
Somebody on YouTube made a comment that said that shows like MTM as well as All in the Family and Maude were made expressly for urban educated adults. These shows also didn't have a hook for children when compared to say, I Love Lucy.
