Good times is not a spin off in a traditional way. However it still is a spin off. If Florida was never on Maude, there would never been Good Times. Norman loved Florida's character and wanted to create a show for her. Its very similar when Maude appeared on All In The Family. Norman loved the character and gave her a show of her own.
Also similar to Mork and Mindy spun off Happy Days. Either show has nothing to do with the other but Mork's appearance on the show led to a show of his own.

Good Times really pissed me off with the whole thing about pretending that Carl never existed. They should have written him off instead of insulting the audience by hoping we'd forget him all together. Lazy and stupid.
I agree with you on the Carl mess that was pathetic but I’m sorry to disappoint but Good Times IS a spinoff a Maude. Do I have to look up the definition of spinoff for you? Look at The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction.

Thank you! That’s what I’m trying to get TVFactFan, Wawwie, and Bonniegirl to see. As long as Florida Evans appeared on both shows, it IS a spinoff.

This identifies the basic question: is it a spinoff as the word is used, rather than as some individual thinks a spinoff should be?
No
I can tell you see the world only in black and white. Just like your response to the Archie Bunker simple question. You took it to a literal meaning, that the characters are not real LOL. Need I remind you we are discussing sitcoms and sitcom characters here. That's the entire point of this forum. We all can say the same thing to every thread....sitcoms are not real. End of story.

Selling a character to a network means creating a sitcom. You can believe different and you are entitled to your opinion. But that is how lots of sitcoms are developed.

Without Florida on Maude there would be no Good Times. She is the same character with the same name. The shows are not related other than the same character. Before you have a chicken, you first need an egg

If you look at that promo it doesnt even promote it as a comedy just a new family friendly comedy created by the same people that created All in the family and maude

Poor example, because it was a pilot episode for Maude and Mork and Mindy, not good times

What do you want it to say? Henry transforms into his alter ego, James and moves on down to the southside to a small cramped apartment in the Chi with Florida? LOL.

The more and more I make references to The Jeffersons the more and more I wish Good Times was a poor version of The Jeffersons. LOL.

Well I dont want to debate Mork and Mindy but that was not a pilot episode. In fact, Robin Williams was not even originally cast to be on Happy Days so that just proves it was not a pilot episode. But it is a false urban legend that it was a pilot episode of Mork and Mindy. The original actor who was to play the alien got very sick and Robin Williams was a last attempt to keep the episode. As Williams wrote, his sickness changed his career. A child of one of the writers was a big fan of Star Wars and they wondered what it would be like to write space aliens into the show. If it was well received then maybe a show.
However, like I said, I don't want to debate Mork and Mindy. Lets compare apples to apples. If Fonzie left Happy Days with another show where he owned a restaurant and had nothing to do with Happy Days anymore but he still went by the name Fonzie and he got is fame from Happy Days. Would you not think it was some sort of spin off? That is my point. Of course its not a spin off in the original sense. But her character Florida was very famous and popular on the show. Sure enough, she leaves Maude but her character shows up on another show. Its not pure spin off but its definitely some sort of spin off because the character was popular enough to have their own show. Yes some things don't add up in typical sitcom fashion. Without Maude there would be no Florida. Without Florida, there would be no Good Times.

The Fonz appeared in the first episode of Mork and Mindy and Archie and Edith visited Maude at her home. Poor examples

Here's the original Good Times review from the NY Daily News in 1974. They toss a new word in to the mix. They say it's derived from Maude.

Thank you for providing that link. Unfortunately, knowing TVFactFan, that’s not gonna change his opinion.

And I just provided the synopsis to that sendoff so that should’ve been enough to convince TVFactFan. LOL. He doesn’t remember Mother Evans, Janet, or Terry and Helena Williams?
