Good times is not a spin off in a traditional way. However it still is a spin off. If Florida was never on Maude, there would never been Good Times. Norman loved Florida's character and wanted to create a show for her. Its very similar when Maude appeared on All In The Family. Norman loved the character and gave her a show of her own.
Also similar to Mork and Mindy spun off Happy Days. Either show has nothing to do with the other but Mork's appearance on the show led to a show of his own. |

I can tell you see the world only in black and white. Just like your response to the Archie Bunker simple question. You took it to a literal meaning, that the characters are not real LOL. Need I remind you we are discussing sitcoms and sitcom characters here. That's the entire point of this forum. We all can say the same thing to every thread....sitcoms are not real. End of story. Selling a character to a network means creating a sitcom. You can believe different and you are entitled to your opinion. But that is how lots of sitcoms are developed. Without Florida on Maude there would be no Good Times. She is the same character with the same name. The shows are not related other than the same character. Before you have a chicken, you first need an egg

What do you want it to say? Henry transforms into his alter ego, James and moves on down to the southside to a small cramped apartment in the Chi with Florida? LOL.

However, like I said, I don't want to debate Mork and Mindy. Lets compare apples to apples. If Fonzie left Happy Days with another show where he owned a restaurant and had nothing to do with Happy Days anymore but he still went by the name Fonzie and he got is fame from Happy Days. Would you not think it was some sort of spin off? That is my point. Of course its not a spin off in the original sense. But her character Florida was very famous and popular on the show. Sure enough, she leaves Maude but her character shows up on another show. Its not pure spin off but its definitely some sort of spin off because the character was popular enough to have their own show. Yes some things don't add up in typical sitcom fashion. Without Maude there would be no Florida. Without Florida, there would be no Good Times. |

The Fonz appeared in the first episode of Mork and Mindy and Archie and Edith visited Maude at her home. Poor examples |

Here's the original Good Times review from the NY Daily News in 1974. They toss a new word in to the mix. They say it's derived from Maude.
