Charmed reboot trailer has been met with backlash
"The more I see from the promotional material and just seeing the atmosphere this show is entering makes me apprehensive," says Princess Weekes. "The hate being flooded towards the three actresses in the comments for these videos is intense. It’s a mixed reaction, with some being hopeful, others being cautious, and the extreme calling them bad actresses and ugly because they are 'stomping' on the legacy of the original Charmed." She worries that if Charmed isn't a hit, the failure will be blamed on having three Latina stars. "A lot of times what some white producers don’t get is that race-bending popular characters start off with a chunk of the potential fanbase viewing that as a negative," says Weekes. "You have to really bring it and also prove to the audience that you didn’t just put non-white paint on a white character and said: 'here you go representation, please watch our show!'" |

Charmed reboot promises plenty of tributes and callbacks to the original
The cast and crew of The CW revival series previewed the pilot at Comic-Con on Thursday. “The original was so much about female empowerment and sisterhood and women taking over the world and I think we need that right now," said executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman. Cast members also said they'd like all the original Charmed stars to make a cameo. "I would love all of them to," said Madeleine Mantock. "I think that would be so cool." Charmed reboot star Sarah Jeffery calls predecessors Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan “sad and quite frankly pathetic”
In a recent Instagram Live, Combs claimed that the original Charmed was removed from Netflix so that subscribers could only find The CW reboot, which prompted McGowan to say the reboot "sucks" even though she hasn't watched it. “I haven’t seen it, I can’t say that. I’ve never seen it,” McGowan said, according to TVLine, adding: “I’m happy that people have jobs. But it can still suck.” Jeffery responded to the comments via a series of tweets on Monday, saying that while she refrained from speaking up, "I find it sad and quite frankly pathetic to see grown women behaving this way. I truly hope they find happiness elsewhere, and not in the form of putting down other (women of color). I would be embarrassed to behave this way. Peace and love to y’all.” UPDATE: Holly Marie Combs fires back at Jeffrey: "That’s some bulls***. And a lot of it." Rose McGowan fires back at Charmed reboot star Sarah Jeffery: "Reboots will always be the shadow" In an Instagram Story last night, McGowan wrote in response to Jeffery that her criticism had "nothing to do with race." “Dear Sarah Jeffery, I honestly had no idea who you were til you tweeted,” McGowan wrote. “I have been too busy fighting monsters & fighting for a massive Cultural Reset to notice who’s in the reboot. Absolutely nothing to do with race, that’s quite a stretch you took. I’m beyond glad any WOC has a well paying job. Hell yes to that. I’m sure you are a great actress...My quibble (google it) is about execs & producers & @wb network trading on years of my work & name in such a cynical and obvious way – a money grab to cash in on the Charmed name. I do not care that they remade it, I have far bigger things I’m dealing with. I do not nor will I watch a show I disagree with on principle...There’s no soul or heart in something made purely for profit whilst refusing to elevate and innovate. Reboots will always be the shadow, the originals will always be the sun. I wish you well.” Shannen Doherty says she's a fan of the Charmed reboot amid the drama between the stars of the two versions "What’s old is new… and I think it’s wonderful a new generation can connect with three strong, powerful women, not to mention the many jobs the show provides," Doherty tells EW after a week of back-and-forth comments between original Charmed stars Rose McGowan and Holly Marie Combs and Charmed reboot star Sarah Jeffery. Holly Marie Combs calls for an end to the Charmed feud “My Charmed friends … I would like everyone to stop,” Combs tweeted on Thursday night after days of her and Rose McGowan feuding with Charmed reboot star Sarah Jeffery. “Truth be told and it will be told is that our issues were and are at the corporate level. And we have the receipts. Just as the new cast were asked to be people they were not we were given ultimatums that were crazily unfair.” She added: “And I will say to the ladies of the reboot… stick together… negotiate together and know that the discourse between us, you guys and crews being discarded and replaced is what they bank on. Division. That is all. Blessed be.” ALSO: Jeffery points out that Shannen Doherty has always expressed support for the Charmed reboot. |
