The Larry Hagman omission is actually more shocking to me because there are stars who have worked with him that are still alive and could pay tribute to him like Patrick Duffy. I'm sure if Tony Randall were still alive they would have done something for Jack. Most young people have probably never heard of Johnathan Winters, but because of his connection to Robin Williams and the fact Robin has a new show on CBS, he was given a tribute. It's all about ratings and stars and promotion anyway. Jack and Larry deserved tributes though.

Exactly. Those two were TV icons, who starred in major shows that are revered years and decades later.

Emmys EP Defends In Memoriam Approach: 'I Thought We Devoted the Proper Amount of Time'

Matt Webb Mitovich

From the moment it was announced that this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards would handle the annual In Memoriam segment differently, by singling out certain fallen stars for special remembrance, many cried foul.

And in its actual execution, the new approach didn’t earn many fans either.

Sprinkled throughout Sunday night’s CBS telecast, James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Jean Stapleton (All in the Family), sitcom scion Gary David Goldberg, comedy icon Jonathan Winters and Glee‘s young Cory Monteith each were paid distinct tribute by individuals who had worked alongside them. But the spoken remembrances took the place of clips. And toward the end of the night, anyone else who had passed on in the past year was denoted in a montage of static B&W photos.

Clipping the clips was “a very conscious decision,” Ken Ehrlich, the producer of the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards, tells TV Guide Magazine. “I felt it was more important to focus in on the faces of the people that were talking about them, because of their personal relationships, and allow them to speak.

“We’ve all seen clips of All in the Family or Tony Soprano,” he added. “What we haven’t seen is Edie Falco or Robin Williams or Michael J. Fox talking about people they really loved.”

Still, there’s the fact that this year’s approach gave added due to but a few, not among them the estimable and iconic likes of Larry Hagman or Jack Klugman (whose son last week voiced called the perceived slight “criminal”). “I would have loved to do more. But there’s only so much time you have,” Ehrlich explained. “And I thought we devoted the proper amount of time to those five pieces and then to the In Memoriam [montage].”

"Modern Family" Creator Knocks Death-Obsessed Emmys
by James Hibberd
Sep 23, 2013

"Modern Family" creator Steve Levitan said Sunday night’s Emmys were a buzz-kill due to producers over-stuffing the ceremony with tributes to fallen celebrities.

The telecast featured the usual “In Memoriam” slideshow, plus five break-out tributes scattered throughout the evening honoring talents such as James Gandolfini, Jonathan Winters and — most controversially — "Glee" co-star Cory Monteith.

Plus, there was a “power of television” segment touching on John F. Kennedy’s assassination. With all those black suits in the audience, one could have easily mistaken the Emmys for a funeral.

Levitan first made a reference to the ceremony being the “saddest Emmys of all time” while on stage to pick up his award for "Modern Family" winning best comedy series.

Later he told EW the endless tributes dragged down the emotional flow of the show — particularly for host Neil Patrick Harris. “Listen, nobody is more respectful of those who have come and gone and made a mark in this business, but I believe the Emmys should be a celebration about all that is exciting and wonderful about television,” Levitan said.

All those people are very deserving, and other people are deserving too. I thought it was too sad. Poor Neil Patrick Harris, who was so brilliant, had to keep digging himself out of the holes dug by these sad moments, time and time again. It was very difficult.

Excuses, excuses, we hear them every year
The Academy will supply them but the reasons aren't always clear
When beloved stars are ignored they strike a lot of short fuses
So to keep the audience coming back each year they offer them excuses

Larry Hagman's Son Preston Hagman Criticizes Emmys In Memoriam Segment: "Do It Correctly"

Entertainment September 23, 2013 AT 5:30PM By Allison Takeda

Preston Hagman, the son of TV icon Larry Hagman, says he was "disappointed" that his father wasn't given more time during the Emmys In Memoriam segment

Sunday's 65th Annual Primetime Emmys brought some unexpected wins (Jeff Daniels) and losses (Bryan Cranston), but to some people, the biggest snub of all wasn't even an award -- it was the In Memoriam segment. Unlike past Emmys broadcasts, which have traditionally featured one long In Memoriam photo reel honoring everyone who passed away in the year leading up to the show, the 2013 Emmys singled out five stars to be memorialized by close friends or colleagues. Host Neil Patrick Harris said the idea was to keep the segment from becoming a "competition" for applause, but that idea seems to have backfired.

Preston Hagman -- whose dad, Dallas star Larry Hagman, died from complications of cancer at age 81 in November -- spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the controversial tributes. Larry Hagman was not selected to receive an individual eulogy; he and other beloved stars including Annette Funicello, Roger Ebert, Dennis Farina, Jeanne Cooper, and Bonnie Franklin were grouped together in a traditional photo montage.

"I think three seconds was short," the younger Hagman said, referring to the amount of time his father's picture was shown onscreen. "I think all of them were short. If you are going to honor [the In Memoriam recipients], honor them with the respect and dignity that they portrayed. Do it for everyone."

He continued: "These are very talented people. The actors that they're honoring have done so much for the industry...If you're going to respect and recognize them, then do it correctly."

Hagman clarified that he wasn't mad about the tributes -- just disappointed in them. "How I felt last night watching [the Emmys] was not anger, it was disappointment. Again, I think my dad was a trailblazer in the industry to set the stage for other actors," he explained. "So it's not anger, it's definitely disappointment for what he contributed to the profession."

Incidentally, Hagman wasn't the only mourning family member who had a problem with the way the In Memoriam tributes were handled. Adam Klugman, the son of The Odd Couple star Jack Klugman, also voiced his displeasure with the show, telling the Associated Press that he thought it was "criminal" that his father was relegated to the generic In Memoriam reel -- especially considering the amount of time Glee's Cory Monteith was given.

"It's an insult, and it really seems typical of this youth-centric culture that has an extremely short attention span and panders to only a very narrow demographic," he complained. "What about the people who should be introduced to somebody like my father? I don't mean to say anything disparaging about Cory, but he was a kid who had won no Emmys, and it was a self-induced tragedy."

How could the Emmys overlook Jack Klugman? He was part of one of TV's great comedy teams with Tony Randall on The Odd Couple and later went on to great success on Quincy. He had a long TV career that also included a sitcom with John Stamos titled You Again? I definitely agree with his son. It was terrbile to omit him from the tribute segments.

Yes they tend to the young folk now. I find it more rewarding to see stars who have lived a bit and had a good career in tv. Many older stars have done a lot in their lives on tv. Other than Glee what had Cory done?

Klugman was a one-in-a-million talent. His son was right. It was a disgrace to omit him.

People like Cory Monteith are a dime-a-dozen. Easily replaceable.

I was somewhat reluctant to post this, because I didn't want people to immediately interpret it as being extremely morbid:

I didn't know Janis Hansen had died. I'm sorry to hear this. She was quite good on the show. Sad news.
