Since Eights and I are in different viewing binges I thought I'd start a thread where I can place a few thoughts of my own.

I finally saw the season 5 finale flashback episode where the lost girls can be seen! I believe Blair saying Sue Ann in a flashback is the first time we hear her name said by anyone since season 1! Also Tootie says her first "Theres gonna be trooooooubllllllllle" since season 2! Mr Bradley was the only season 1 cast member to speak in any flashback.

Good catch. She was Geri Warner in season 2 and then Geri Tyler in her last episode in season 5. I have digital copies of every episode on my computer so it's easy and quick for me to discover these things when mentioned

Yeah, I don't deserve actual credit for noticing. Geri mentions it in her book, as one of the things that bothered her about being on FOL: originally, she was Geri Warner, cousin to Blair on Blair's father's side. Then in the last episode she's in, she was suddenly Geri Tyler, Blair's cousin on her mother's side. She talked with the producers about it before the episode taped, but made no headway.

Because the producers were offering her fewer and fewer episodes per season, the name change fed into her overall feelings about the show, as they naturally would when you feel like you know your character better than the producers, who don't bother to even give your character a consistent last name.

Ultimately, Geri turned down the last episode they gave her, and I can understand why.

They had the same last name in season 2, which is weird since you mentioned they're related by their mothers. Warner is Blair's dads last name. Geri has no Warner blood in her so how did she get the last name Warner in season 2? Did Geri's mom marry one of David's relatives? That's odd to me now that it's been mentioned.

So they wanted her on after the episode where she organized the charity dinner?

Yeah, in season five, Geri did three episodes: "What Price Glory", "Star at Langley", and "All By Herself". She's mentioned in several interviews that the producers offered her only one episode the following season, so she turned them down. It felt insulting to her because the producers had been calling her a "cast member" ; in seasons 3 and 4, she had done four episodes per season. But there's no way anyone would consider her a cast member with one episode per season.

Geri didn't understand that actors on this show could be (and were) dropped at a moment's notice, and that the show which had broken new ground in its early years would later avoid taking risks for fear of tackling real issues in the later seasons. Actors getting dropped happened again and again on FOL.

But yeah, with Sue Ann and Cindy's lack of name use, it flummoxed me ever since I was a little boy that these other girls who were "friends of mine" from season 1 were appearing on the show, and credited as their characters in the closing credits, but their names were never mentioned! That's possible. The implication, though, was that Geri was related to Blair on her father's side, due to her last name being Warner. At least, Geri Jewell thought so, and was sad when the producers changed her last name without explanation. I can see why.

So I'm watching season 2 now, and it's so refreshing! This is what I feel is "classic 'Facts' ". It's the era that was the largest presence in my early formative years. The show is retooled, and it's so reinvigorating! I love it. I heartily welcome it with open arms: :bighug: I feel so "on board" with Garrett and her girls and eager to watch their adventures unfold! :grouphug:

Now don't get me wrong, of course I love season 1, and I absolutely love my Cindy, and Molly, and I respect Sue Ann and Nancy as Lost Girls. And I do wish their characters could have stayed around, but, since they didn't, I enjoy the show for what it became. Since there were "10, 12 girls" all jumbled around that first season, it's SO nice to have a smaller cast with focused scripts and balanced characters. I think the first season could have been greatly improved had they worked with the writers to develop balanced scripts between all the characters, but since that didn't happen, diving into season 2 is so refreshing, and relaxing (I love the cozy mood of intimate scenes in the cafeteria building).

For me, "classic Facts" is the first four seasons. And while I appreciate the better writing of Season Two, I will always miss the Lost Girls in the later episodes. Even the cameos were better than the Season Four nonsense, with no Lost Girls in that season at all.

Jo brought an important element to the show that gave Blair an excellent foil. But I also miss the conservative voice of reason that Sue Ann had: had she been around when the girls were daring each other to go to the Chug A Lug Bar, they might all have avoided being goaded by Jo into breaking curfew and stealing a van.

Season Two had more balanced writing, true. But we didn't see them in the classroom anymore, and we see actual teachers a whole lot less. These aspects were less realistic in a show supposedly set at a girls' school. And the loss of the bigger cast meant that Eastland would often feel as though it was only populated by five people, particularly in episodes where there was no guest cast (which was frequent).

Yes, I love the continuity of getting to see the Lost Girls in the cafeteria years. Season 1 is kind of like an "anomaly" since it's so short, but I do love it for what it is (I honestly can't remember which I saw first, the cafeteria years or season 1; I was so young! :baby: ).

I love these elements, though. If I want to see a school sitcoms et in classrooms, I can watch "Head of the Class". I actually prefer this non-traditional approach, being in the cafeteria and a "fly on the wall" for the interconnected lives of these girls and their guardian. Now of course I'm biased because I got to know these girls as my sisters in my formative years, in these cafeteria adventures (in 64 episodes, versus only the pitiful 13 of season 1). This era takes me so strongly back to my childhood, and I love it. :)

I never felt that Eastland was only populated with 5 people though, because we're sequestered along with the girls on their probation.

And Lorsie, you really shouldn't be surprised there were "only" 64 episodes in the cafeteria years. True season 2 was 16 episodes*, but even if you averaged, say, 22 episodes in those 3 seasons, that would be 66 right there.

*(and while season 2 is 16 episodes, 2 of those are continued stories. So really, season 2 has just 14 stories, only 1 more than season 1!)

RetroGuy2000

That might have cut it during their probationary period, but it doesn't work after they're off probation, free to interact with other students again, and no longer required to serve in the cafeteria. At that point, we should have seen them having free time once more, and presumably interacting with other students. Instead, they remain cloistered in the cafeteria for another 1.5 years, so wrapped up in their own dramas that they fail to notice that two of their previous friends haven't shown up to their own graduation.

That would have changed the show though, and I don't want it changed during the cafeteria years. It's a wonderful era that is such "comfort viewing": cafeteria, lounge, kitchen, and upstairs galore. I'm very pleased that the formula remains the same until the next major series overhaul (season 5). I do wish though the Lost Girls had remained more constant, appearing some in season 4, of course with Nancy and Sue Ann graduating (the writers went to the trouble to include them with guest appearances, so it still mystifies me that Nancy and Sue Ann get NO mention in "Graduation" ).

I felt the same way when I watched "The New Girl, part 2", and saw a couple of additional lines when Molly and Margo get their food in the cafeteria. The version I was used to, in syndication, was missing Tootie's "string beans" line and part of Molly's follow-up: "I guess". Same with Nancy's scene in "Overachieving".

When I first saw that on DVD, this was me! --->

And that moment is at the beginning of the end credits of TNGP2, and I always wondered what that was, what was cut out?? So it turns out it wasn't cut from the episode, but from the syndication (or a syndicated) version.

The fact that they moved "Double Standard" from the 4th episode taped to being the 3rd episode shown, makes me wonder if the producers saw what a "hot" find they they got in this new Blair/Jo dynamic, and wanted to capitalize on it by showing a heavy Blair/Jo conflict episode immediately following the first two episodes of "The New Girl" (even though it would have been the 4th episode shown anyway, just 1 more episode later, but I digress, lol). I'm reminded of "The Dick Van Dyke Show", where "My Blond-Haired Brunette" was something like the 9th or 12th episode taped, but it was moved up to be the second episode shown, immediately after the pilot, because they were blown away by the discovery of Mary Tyler Moore's unbelievable comedic talents.

Does that mean one of our favorite Lost Girls has a name that means "cutting fish in thin, short strips"?!

By the way, there is a terrible line in TNGP2.

In the police station, Blair is freaking out about being locked away, and Tootie says, "Blair, we've only been in here 45 minutes." And the audience laughs.

Well, that's not funny, because it's more than reasonable someone like Blair would be freaked out locked up in a holding cell. Of course spoiled, rich Blair she would want to be out after being in there for 45 minutes. Now, if Tootie has said, "Blair, we've only been in here for 5 minutes." then that would be in character to the point of being really funny. Poor little rich girl not able to handle 5 minutes locked up, lol.

But 45? Really, Linda and Margie?

Hey wait a minute...in "The Secret", Jo is angry at her father, and runs to her room to get away from him, and Blair goes to see her and gives her a pep talk about how her 3 fathers haven't shown her as much love as Jo's father is trying to give her.

Well, back a year ago in "Molly's Holiday", Molly is angry at her father, and runs to her room to get away from him, and Blair goes to see her and gives her a pep talk about how her 3 fathers haven't shown her as much love as Molly's father is trying to give her.

So I guess Zsa Zsa Gabor is the first big name guest star on "The Facts of Life"!

She was such a big celebrity back then, I wonder what made her do this show that wasn't even a top show, not even a top 20 show. Did she need the work? I doubt it. Did she already know and like the show? Had she never heard of it before but adored the script when her agent sent it to her? Did she take anything that came along to keep her image out there? Who knows? But it would be interesting if we knew.

Well, I'm sure that playing a countess who is glamorous, rich, independently successful, and adored by legions of females was perhaps a big plus, lol.

These are good questions. I don't have any of the answers, but looking at IMDb.com, it looks as though she was pretty selective: she only did one TV show or movie per year, on average, during that era. That leads me to believe that she wasn't interested in getting as much exposure as possible.

Do we know why the writer chose the name "Cheryl Thug" for a punchline of a Blair joke insulting Jo? I just Googled, and there was never such a person/figure as "Cheryl Thug". Then I thought maybe it was a pun, or a take on a name, but the closest I can think of is "Cheryl Tiegs", but that doesn't make sense. Was "Cheryl Thug" ever a fictional name thrown around, a la "Don Juan"? I've certainly never heard of her anywhere else before.

Like you, I suspect it was a pun on an existing celebrity's name, or someone in the news at that time, but I can't figure out who it might have been. There are a lot of possibilities.

Tiegs doesn't rhyme, and would have been unrecognizable as a pun.

Yeah, that's why I said "pun, or a take on a name", since Tiegs isn't a pun, and knowing Tiegs could only fit in that latter category, but that still doesn't make sense. I suspect it was just a name they pulled out of thin air...but...why? lol

Retro will let you know. I don't know that it has. This show was so unique. It had comedy plenty, but still had those scenes of drama too. But that seemed the show's riskiest move of all---well, story-wise (not counting the post-season 1 remodeling of the show itself).

On my soap I used to watch, my favorite character Frankie (nickname for "Mary Frances") was betrayed by her childhood best friend Christy in 1993 when Christy moved to the show's main town, rekindled their friendship, fell in love with Frankie's husband, and secretly killed her own terminally ill husband and framed my Frankie for assisted suicide, so Frankie would be jailed and Christy would have Frankie's hubby all to herself! (but the hubby wanted nothing to do with Christy in that way---it turns out, Christy had "problems"!)

Definitely on MASH. "End Run (https://www.mash4077tv.com/episodes/season05a/#episode113)", episode 5-17, in 1977, was a suicide episode. But this was very likely the first suicide of a schoolgirl shown on a US sitcom.

They really gave Lisa her comedy chops with Blair in season 2. She starts off how she was in season 1, but they gradually broaden out playing on her wealth, her status, and her self-absorption.

One of my favorite Blair moments in season 2 is in "Bought and Sold", when Mrs. Garrett lectures Blair, then starts to lecture Natalie, saying, "But Natalie, aren't you forgetting something? It's not all Blair's fault." And then Blair gloats over being half off the hook, "home free"-gushing and saying:

But, on the upside, Mrs. Garrett's face, which always looks "deflated" for a while in season 1 after having suddenly lost "25 big ones!", will be looking more and more natural.

No. She also missed episode 6-04, "My Boyfriend's Back", seen earlier that season.

Ya know, when I watch "Teenage Marriage Part 2" and see Mrs. Garrett stick it to Jo in Retro's favorite hotel room (tire-tread blanket, anyone?), I always wonder, why didn't she pull that with Jo sooner, back at Eastland? You know, that whole, "Ohhhh, no you don't! I am personally responsible for you!! And you're gonna stay put!!"

Maybe she was just too stunned and couldn't believe it was actually happening, but she really should have stopped Jo from running away from Eastland before it got to that point.

Yeah that ad got the plot all wrong. Blair never turned George down. The guy she went out with was obsessed with her. She had to go with him or he would have hounded her over missing another date with him. She eventually locked him in the trunk of his car to go to George's reunion. This is the episode Lisa had to rewatch to realize she actually kissed George Clooney in an episode. She had forgotten about it.

Fans diss season seven too. Most fans mainly like seasons 2 - 4 and tolerate seasons 5 and 6. When I first started posting here in 2001, fans talked about how bad the Over Our Heads seasons were. You'll find a lot of threads where people complain how corny they are. They were comparing them to season 1. Season 7 isn't a popular season with fans. After rewatching it, I agree. I would rate it down at the bottom with seasons 1 and 9. I'm glad they were able to bounce back in season 8. Season 8 is the only season I like from the Over Our Heads era.

Hmm, so in "Running" the expected star (athlete) has bailed out of the race this year because of her studies.

In "Green-Eyed Monster", the expected star has bailed out of the musical this year because of her studies.

In both of them, the expected girl ends up competing after all, and then the girls fight. And in both of them, the pairs of girls are best friends, and this is pointed out by the other girls. In "Running", Sue Ann punches Blair after trying to hit Cindy. In GEM, Natalie punches Blair's palm tree after claiming she was jumping for joy and tripped (haha), so in both episodes, Blair suffers damage---in R personally, and in GEM artistically.

And, of course, in both, Mrs. Garrett helps clear things up, and the girls apologize.

And, of course, in both episodes, Nancy has only about 5 lines. ;)

To me, he just feels... misplaced.

As if he would have been great on Silver Spoons or Charles in Charge, but he's ten years too young to be hanging around these 20-something girls. It makes no sense, and we're never given any motivation for him to hang around them, or they around him.

Wow, in "The Affair" Natalie screams at Blair, shouting at her that, among other things, "You're cheap, and sleazy, and disgusting!!" Of course, her world has just been shot out of a cannon.

What feels awkward as a viewer though, is the fact that the next scene opens with Natalie sitting at a cafeteria table between Jo and---Blair! And there's no apology from Natalie, no mention of Natalie screaming in Blair's face, no acknowledgement from Blair or Natalie of what had just happened in the previous scene. They just seem "normal" again. That's jarring, I wish there had at least been an acknowledgment.

Oo, good point! :yeahthat

Maybe after Tootie told Mrs. Garrett and the girls all about it on the train back to Peekskill, Mrs. Garrett called the police in Manhattan and told them all about it!

Oh Lorsie, thank for bringing hope for Christy! :bighug:

Yeah! And it's the only instance I can think of in any sitcom where a sibling of a main character is on screen, but not given any lines! (maybe Felice wouldn't let her: "If I'm getting barely any lines, hell no 'Natalie's sister' ain't gettin' any!" lol)

2 things I wonder about Lost Girl cameos in the cafeteria years:

1) Since Cindy and Sue Ann are nearly always seen buddy-buddying together like they're "buddies forever" or something ( ;) ), I wonder if, when the producers/writers were discussing episodes to show other girls in, if they ever said things like, "Let's get the Julies from the first year" or "We'll put Felice and the Julies in".

2) Since the Julies' characters' names are NEVER used in the cafeteria years (but oddly/respectably they are still credited as their characters in the closing credits), I wonder if, when Felice was first contacted about doing "Gossip", she told her agent, "Okay, I'll come back for some recurring appearances, but ONLY if my character is the ONLY one from the first season who gets to have her name used! Sue Ann and Cindy got enough attention last year, I want this to be NANCY'S turn! :soapbox: "

Oh, I didn't. But that is before Felice makes her "comeback". So Molly got out just in time to have her name said once in the cafeteria. ;)

So "Molly" and "Nancy" are said in the cafeteria :singer: but "Sue Ann" and "Cindy" never are. :(

As I've mentioned, Felice did describe the pre-appearance discussions as negotiations, but I doubt she demanded that she be the only one to be mentioned by name. I suspect, however, that her agent requested larger roles for her, and that, of course, would have resulted in a greater likelihood of being name-checked.

I wonder if her agent did it on her behalf, then? "Look, those blondes got all the attention last year, you let Felice be the front-runner now!" lol

Could be!

I know that, at the time, Felice's mom was managing both Felice and Mindy. Might have been more like, "You want Mindy? Sure, you can have her. But you've gotta cough up some lines for Felice, too. No more of this "Didn't get into "The Group" stuff. Three episodes per season, and she gets a scene with one of the globes."

So, in this scene in "Who Am I?" in the 8th minute, what exactly are Jo and Blair doing? I've never been able to figure it out. At first I thought they might be doing something with nail polish or makeup, but that's totally not Jo (girly). But they wouldn't be doing something mechanical with small little bike parts, unless Blair was just so bored out of her skull she decided to find it interesting, lol. But now I think they're playing a game. But what game? I see dice, but it's tougher to make out much else...Retry, are you familiar with what game they're playing?

Wow, good call! Thanks for solving that mystery!

It doesn't look like a backgammon board that I've seen before. I've never played it, but I've heard it's a pretty tough game.

In the top photo, you can see the Backgammon case pretty clearly. It's one of the portable ones, with fasteners in the front, which hold the case closed when it's not in use, like this one:

Fun fact: backgammon can be traced back to very similar games played nearly 5,000 years ago, in Mesopotamia. Ancient Jo-aleh and Blantu could have played the game along the Tigris River.

So I finished episode 24 and am starting to see why they decided to change Edna's Edibles considering EDNA wasn't in the last 6 episodes! It was a little contrived to just have the girls taking over her shop.
