That was the funny part because Barbara is a dark eyed brunette and Farrah is a blue eyed blonde! They look NOTHING alike! The Bob character was written to be kind of goofy and he was confirming it now! :D He thought Barbara was beautiful, so he compared her to the hottest actress at the time, even though they looked nothing alike  It wouldn't have been funny if he said she looked like a dark haired, dark eyed pretty actress at the time! I wonder if it was a situation of one actor's availability over the other rather than script plots - Truth is the basic "office plot" was interchangeable. Both were Ann's Boss.

They never seemed of have an issue with Shelly's availability when she was a guest player (yr 3-4,6) and reoccurring (7 & 9)). I wonder if they kept a script or two handy for when she was available during the non-regular cast-member season (8)? (She had a carry over episode shot during season 7 but aired during the 8th as well)

Max and Ed were in one ep. together. At Barbara's wedding.;) But they had no interaction at all!

I wonder if Ed liked Max? Like what would a Dad think if his Daughter married her best man instead of her intended right at the same wedding? I think that is why they made it that Ed was out of state on a business trip when Julie had her quicky wedding, because the writers didn't really want to get into or address how Ed would react! I know my Father wouldn't have been very happy in this situation! He would freak out I'm sure!!!!

I can't fault Ed for missing Julie's wedding. He had no notice and he was already involved in a business deal commitment.

Ed never complained about Max, but he did complain when Julie was dating that older veterinarian.

Ed's lack of presence may also have been an actor availability issue. Joseph might not have been available for any of the available production blocks they could have shot the episode and still got it on air in time. (The episodes aired 3&4 and were shot 3&4.)

When Barbara was married, the two-parter which opened the season was shot 4th and 5th - clearly to work around Joseph's availability issues - of any of the guest actors, he was the most important.

(Nanette Fabray was reoccurring by this time.)

Svenfan1234

It sounds to me like Ed (Joseph) might have had a contractual thing going on? Or we know how Bonnie Franklin was if she didn't like an actor.

On this matter, I tend to swing towards availability.

Different from when actors were not in episodes shot and held to be carried over due to the writers/actor strikes with the production team knowing the plans for those seasons (Episodes were shot with Mac and Ron AFTER episodes shot without them were made to be held for the following season - They knew Mac was being fired after all and Ron was being let go)

107. 5-18 0525 24 Feb 80 Retrospective (1)
108. 5-19 0526 24 Feb 80 Retrospective (2)

Look at the order shot, and order aired - both to cover up Mac's "Vacation".

I am wondering if Retrospect was shot in front of a studio audience since it's 90% clips, and clearly a budget episode to make up for whatever losses they incurred due to Mac's issues. (Scripts rewritten, lost production week or two, the throwing in of an extra/earlier rerun which CBS needed to "Make Good" on ad wise, etc)

Notice the episode featuring Bob (Stick 'em Up) was a carry over,
explains why Mark wasn't in or mentioned that episode (It was Barbara's birthday) and he had already been introduced.

Well regardless where the actor was, What would Ed have thought of his Daughter not only jumping into a marriage with a man she just met, but to leave him at the altar for the best man?

I really think it wasn't the actor not being available but they really didn't know exacty how or have enough script time wise to add Ed!;)

You are probably right, Bonnie. We already know that Ed objected big time when Julie was considering marriage with that much older vet. So could you imagine how Ed would have reacted to Julie dumping her groom for the best man? This was a lost opportunity, because the writers should have had Ed speak up in this episode.

For whatever reason (they couldn't get the actor, they lost interest in the character), in the back half of the series, except for Barbara's wedding, the writers abandoned Ed.

The one surprise in any episode is "Schneider The Model" - if I recall correctly - Ann (or one of the girls) mentions they hadn't seen Schneider in 3 days and were getting worried.

...it took 3 days for them to get worried? It always seemed he was peeking his head in once a day - I guess he wasn't overusing his passkey or over-abusing his friendship after all.

He just came in on taping days. He left them alone the rest of the week.

Do you guys think Michael grew the beard for the part of Max ? Like did ODAAT require that he have a beard, or do you think he just wanted one? He was clean shaven a few months earlier in Love Boat and in every other role he was in too before Max.;) Only time he really had a beard was as Max till Season 9 , Foley Square and Crazy as a Fox. Oh and in that movie with Gary Coleman! Mainly he is clean shaven. And he NEVER just had a mustache alone without a beard! I wonder why?

That's interesting you noticed that - I think it was to make him look a little older.

You would think an airline would have a no facial hair policy for it's male flight attendants, right?

Yeah esp. in 1979, there really weren't many male flight attendants yet right? And I would think they would want them more conservative , like you said , a no facial hair policy!;)

Maybe to look older, but nah they were actually making his age younger than Michael's real age of 31. Possibly to look more like a bad boy !;)

And about the mustache, that is funny he never just had a mustache . Being they were VERY popular back than!;)

There was a no-facial hair policy in airlines back then/now? I never knew that.

I thought it was funny and eery, how, in Rhoda's pilot speaking of airline rules, they were joking about airport security with Mary and Rhoda and Mary beeping, and now we know years later that it's MUCH more strict...

We don't know about the facial hair policy . Retro and i were just speculating!;)

I had to miss Rhoda yesterday cause of work!:( I get off at 3 usually on Sunday's so I will be able to see the second ep. but yesterday I had to go to the store after work! I was sad I missed it.:( I love Rhoda! :)

Sometimes , but rarely on Sunday's she has me 10-2 instead of 11-3 ! Wish it could always be like that! At least I get to see I Love Lucy in full though!:)

The only other reason for the beard was to hid the fact he was a former Saturday morning teen-idol "Kaptain Kool" - Yes, It has been a year since his last appearance as the character (They band made an appearance in the BAY CITY ROLLERS pilot with a new tone downed look, less Glam Rock more Ramones like)

But he did do a few things before ODDAT...

Yeah adorable Kaptain Kool!;) :eyes: And his other TV role Clete Meizenheimer from Mary Hartman! You may be right about that. making him look different than his former role. To be honest at the time it really didn't dawn on me that Julie's new Husband WAS the same guy who was that Hotty roving news reporter guy on MH!

And to be perfectly honest, back than I thought Max was OK, but I didn't really crush on him till Antenna started showing ODAAT a couple years ago. However I LOVED Clete Meizenheimer!! I'm just sad that I was a little too old to know Kaptain Kool and didn't have siblings younger than me that would have been watching him on Saturday morning!:( Cause he was a TOTAL HOTTY as Kaptain kool too! I know as a teenager I would have LOVED him had I known him!;)

Say, did we ever find out what the single highest rated first-run episode of ODAAT was? I'm guessing it might be around the time it followed M*A*S*H.

(Not sure what the lowest was but some of the 2nd half of Season 9 came in 1/3rd lower then the rest of the season due to that bad move to Wednesdays from Sunday where it still did well.)

Bonnie probably thinks that "Dear Max" should've been the highest rated episode! :)

"Dear Max" (Show now at Sunday at 8:30pm, 11th aired episode of the season) got an 18.5 rating coming off an ALICE with an 18.00 against ABC (Hardcastle and McCormick) with 16.9 and NBC with 17.5. (Knight Rider) JEFFERSON'S Followed with a 22.3 - CBS's 2nd highest rated show and highest non-60 Minutes for the night.

ODAAT was the 5th Highest rated show of the night, CBS's 5th highest rated (including 60 minutes) show, and the 3rd highest rated sitcom of the night. GOOODNIGHT BEANTOWN after Jefferson's got a 19.6 (Both Jefferson and GB were against moves rating 15 on NBC - Bronco Billy and ABC - Slap Shot) and TRAPPER JOHN got a 20.9. I don't have the demographics but it's easy to assume both Alice and ODAAT had strong female viewership against the male targeted shows on ABC and NBC

CBS won the night

I would guess if ODAAT had signed for that extra 10th Season, it would have moved to 9:30pm for Season 9. Remember, two year deal would have been in place a season earlier so programming department would have "protected" it's investment with the better lead in of The Jeffersons and GB would have been after ALICE.

Remember, That once CBS gave up begging Val and Bonnie to reconsider, (You know they most likely tried, right?) Season 9 was "dead show walking" and moved to Wednesdays in the winter with a show sitting on the shelf for a year (Mama Malone) and played out at 1/3 lower ratings as counter-programming, and then given the Monday slot for the last 2 1/2 episodes. (Which included "The Nearness of You". The final "real" episode and the last hanging plot-line that needed to be addressed.)

The first part of Season 9 that aired on Sundays did an average of 18 and in most cases built on the ratings for ALICE, or was even. Even with all the preemption Sunday had across the board for the night - movies, specials, miniseries. The ratings for season 9 are lopsided with the slot moves - same with season 8. (Where it played Sunday at 9:30 till a Move to Monday at 9:30)

But I digress....and we still need to find out what the highest rated single episode or episodes were. Data is out there someplace.

Here's an ODAAT question. Can you name an episode that had no scenes in the apartment? I came up with 'Airport' and I think there were some in season 9, although I can't specifically name them.

Do you mean just the apartment? Or do you mean the Royer/Horvath house too?;)

If you mean just the apartment , well Ann wasn't in The Nearness of you, so there were no scenes at the apt. I think Dear Max was filmed entirely at the house too!;)

Yup, I meant an episode with no scenes in Apt. 402.

Ann actually is in the unedited version of Nearness. You could see her in the closing credits on Antenna, talking to Grandma at the house.

I did a peak ahead and it looks like the show is smoothly going to progress into season 8 with no skipping, however it does look like there will be some preemption due to Gay pride month programming.

However, recently they did skip two episodes previously aired "The Girls Alone" during the recent Sunday run, and "Wicked Ann" (The infamous Ann slaps Alex episode) a couple of days ago.

Since both only had one airing so far, I suspect it was to adjust things for multi-part episodes to fall on the same day during the cycle before or after the skip. I've noticed that this time around no multi-part story has been split over two days while last time several were.

Julie could look very pretty at times, but when she was addicted to drugs, she looked so haggard, unhealthy and grossly under weight. But she did look very pretty in the "Julie Shows Up" episode.

But by Season 9 she was using again and looked even worse than in Season 5 in the 3 episodes she did in Season 9.

She apparently was shooting a 4th when she was fired/quit - as she tells the story she didn't complete the episode - so which episode was shelved for rewrite and most likely a Sam and Ann Centric - was brought forward, which clearly is "Take My Ex" (0904) and the "unknown lost 4th episode" was we can assume reworked without Julie, or totally scrapped. (Imagine,a lost episode...)

We do know CBS did put in an unscheduled preemption the 2nd week of the 9th season to deal with the production delays - to adjust for the lost week or two for production/post. However, "The Dentist" was due to air that week, and it was shot second. "Shakedown", the Season opener was shot third (Which is odd in itself - an actor availability issue?) ,and "Bedtime Story" was shot first

(Gap weeks are Sunday night preemptions for specials, films and mini-series that affected all or part of the night.Sometimes an hour, sometimes all 3 hours! The 3 Wednesday gap weeks are in-season reruns)*

Mac's episodes as aired are:

Shakedown (2 October 1983)
The Dentist (23 October 1983)
The Bedtime Story (30 October 1983)

Production order is odd for this season. The Season opener was shot 3rd and It only features the regular cast. The Whole production order when compared to past seasons is all over the map.

*(CBS also ran 10 Summer Season 9 repeats which were preempted by the national political conventions, mini-series rerun and specials - Some rated better than some of the in-season first run Wednesday airings!)

I wonder why they picked Barbara's bed ? Did they feel less embarrassed that the Sister would know they were about to Vo de oh doh doh as apposed to the Mom or a little boy?:happyface  :D

Again proving that Logo probably has an automatic system removing arbitrary and important scenes from ODAAT. Antenna's edits were MUCH better and more discrete, minus " Nearness of You", but I bet Logo hacks that PLUS another vital scene. I'll never watch ODAAT on Logo.

It's weird cause LOGO is very good at leaving the beginning scene intact which is cool cause it really introduces the show. Sometimes Antenna would kind of start at limbo, but Antenna seemed to keep the scenes throughout the rest of the show intact where as LOGO seems to cut a lot. But than not always. In the ep. where Bob brought over Claudia Faraday there was some dialogue of Max's that I never saw before that obviously Antenna cut out and LOGO left in! ;)

So Summer vacation officially started for you now right? :) Way cool. I totally wish I could take the summer off from work!! I'm getting TIRED already!:(

Yes! Summer has officially started! :D I'm so happy!

Yeah, but Antenna at least had the "old-fashioned" 80s edits that are not entirely obvious. Logo's edits are 20 minutes And taking out 5 1/2-6 minutes an episode.

Trust me, these edits are being planned out by a human being.

It's the overuse of cross-fades to cover edits that ARE annoying - not the shortened front/back of scenes.

The AntennaTV prints (actually go back to the original EMBASSY Syndication offering (The show was still in production), and even earlier - the CBS daytime run (Which started with the first 4 seasons) - so it's likely - but not confirmed - some of the original writing-editing-production staff were involved with the editing. In other words the actual people involved in production "script edited" via editing after the fact. Most Likely "Jefferson's" were also overseen by their production team - episodes were also being added to the original syndication package while still in production. But for the most part most shows would not have been that fortunate.

But logo is removing an extra 2 minutes (!) with editing, time compression and on-screen end credits.(Right there is 30 seconds, so we're losing only an added 1:30 of screen time, which means 3 minutes per episode is cut! I've timed out several, (editing out commercials on the computer with a simple program) they all come in at 20:30 so that's the target number on ODAAT at least - other shows may vary.

The "minisodes" worked best for The Three Stooges - since the shorts only ran 15-17 minutes.

"Sisters" feels like a fresh start, but also a return to the core of the show - At least in minimum they felt Mac was well enough to come back full time (She only did 10 shows in Season 8) Little did they know she'd "over do it" in the "Hiatus" and the backlash would hit in August during the "Lost" episode 4's production.

"Sisters" also features perhaps the last, best scenes between Val and Mac that are like the good old days. Must have given the network hope. Again Val in her first book talks about "spin-off" talk when Mac returned that eventually died down - the Network must have gotten nervous of a relapse which did happen.

"Sisters" sets up Season 9 for the girls and the husbands side of life, which seems planned regardless if Bonnie and Val had chosen Season 9 to be the last at that point yet. The Show used Season 8 for fresh directions, one being Mac being stable enough to do more episodes (Season 7 she did only 4, Mike did 5) and Sam and Ann getting married. (and getting rid of Alex at the end of the season with less emotion than his Dad's death which was SO Badly handled!)

I was watching "Julie's Return" and at one point she calls Barbara "Barbie", no one, not even Julie had called her that since Season 3 or so, it felt like an ad-lib to me.

It's sad to think they didn't speak for 16 years.

But one does wonder, if Mac hadn't relapsed, would she (and Mike) have been worked into the Schneider series? Might have been what it needed to sell it to CBS.

RetroTVNitekatt

Talking about Nick's death - wouldn't Alex as his heir end up with his father's share (even with a loss) of the business? Did Ann have to buy Alex off? She mentioned in the episode "Shake Hands" the business had a debt/loss of $2400 or so dollars. (rounding it up)

We know the firm was stable by the end of Season 6, so the only way she could have so much debt was she had paid off Alex for his father's share. I find it highly unlikely Ann would cut Alex out of anything owed to him from his father's work.

However, There is that issue of two months owed back rent mentioned in the episode (Could that be part of the outstanding debit) - which might also give an idea of how long Nick's been gone - 3 months?- without an artist and the loss of a partner, the handful of accounts they have would suffer, but I doubt Ann lost them all. She was interviewing artists in "Shake Hands" but she should have had someone sometime earlier - it's as if the writers couldn't settle on how long it had been since Nick's death.

As Felicia was the custodial parent at time of death, would Alex have received SSI survivor benefits for his father's death? (Children till 18 if a parent dies receives benefits - the lost of Child Support, etc)

The mishandling of Nick's death is the 2nd sore spot of the show next to Mac's issues. I'm sure all of us have run in our heads our own "episodes" of how they might have handled it over several episodes.

But as I've said - Lear made the right call after James and Edith - both hurt the respective shows and they were never the same again (Archie starting to Date really hit things home) and ODAAT was stable the year before Nick, Nick's Year and the Year After. (With just some light variance due to time slot moves)

There's also the status of the relationship between the two - it seemed things were "reset" at the end of "Indianapolis Story" - Close, but not involved, focusing on the work relationship and friendship rather than a relationship (bot to mention the advice on being a divorced parent.) All this from three lines of Dialog from Nick without Ann saying anything.

I LOVED "Sisters" ! Introducing that cute little house.:) And it seemed as you said to be a nice fresh start! ;) And besides how hot and how much I love Max. The story was fun and entertaining! ;) And cute little original VERY blonde/blue eyed Annie!(Hey Max, did you ever consider a paternity test?) :D It was so cute when Max was holding her while he was cooking! :)

In Julie's Return. You are right, it was only early seasons Barbara was ever called Barbie! Maybe Julie felt sentimental being pregnant. That does trigger lots of hormones that make us emotional! ;) I LOVED that two parter too! ;)

No Max but todays two parter Dinner at seven I really like! ;) But I have to miss on LOGO,:( due to heavy errand running. Good news is it's on YOUtube and I will watch it later! :) I loved the introduction of Mark. Even though he was a bit of a jerk , Max too when he was first introduced in Julie's wedding. And they both became very good men! I wonder why the writers brought them both in as lions that turned to lambs?

It's just terrible how ODAAT is a total hackjob on Logo. 18, 19, 20 minute episodes... they all vary in time. They're Viacom, after all. They don't care. And in a few months, I bet you ODAAT will be gone from Logo altogether when it heads back to Antenna. At least Antenna's copies were 22:30 or 23:00.

Now where was I?

You know, The Boston Public Library has "TV Guides" on Microfilm from 1972 forward, one of these days I've got to go in and make copies of some of the articles, listings and ads.

It's been far too long - I used to go and read old comic strips in the various newspapers from the 1930's-1940's.

Everything is electronic now - a scanner reads the microfilm and transfers it digitally. Problem is the microfilm being decades old is so beat up! No hard copies are available.

I wanted to get you birthday wishes from Michael Lembeck, and if he were on Twitter I would have given it a shot, but alas, your boy is unreachable. You'll have to settle for the Sitcoms Online crowd, like tenter and um.

The core problem is the current policies of Viacom in how they handle the revised accepted running times for shows set up in the early 1980's - the 22:30 half hour and 45:00 hour - This we agree on 100% Sven.

It's amazing to think Viacom is the same company that gave us the original "Nick@Nite's TV Land" where Shows ran uncut if available from the studio - and surprisingly most were (except for Some from MCA-Universal - "Ellery Queen" - with our "Older Man" Jim Hutton - ran edited for instance.) 48:00-51:00 for hours and 25:00-25:30 for half hours. Even "Nick@Nite" itself was uncut from 1985 to 1989 before they had enough advertisers to fill time. I've still got shelves of VHS/Hifi-SP/High Grade of the stuff that never made it to DVD or Columbia House.

If we get really desperate, we could try something new, and talk about Valerie Bertinelli or Michael Lembeck

Mac on "Donny and Marie" :) Would have been Season 3rd for them.

12/9/77 - "Barbara's Friend" (2) would have been the most recent episode aired for ODAAT, so this is around early Season 3.

The Love Boat episode was:

Youth Takes a Holiday/Don't Leave Home Without It/Prisoner of Love

October 15th,1983 - so Glenn was on "Jennifer Sleep Here" and Beth was still on "Alice".

Glenn's second guest spot. His first was the episode aired March 5th,1983 (His run on ODAAT was winding down - Season 8, episodes 18 and 19 aired the following two nights as CBS was shifting the show to Mondays which caused the light ratings dip that season) and February 16,1985 (Which by this time he was a "Journeyman" actor on TV without a regular gig prior to going to college.)

The Logistics and different shooting schedules of "Love Boat" (and "Fantasy Island" for that matter) allowed the show to get actors on current series. It was the same with "Love American Style" (The original)

We've established he was playing younger, but if they were supposed to be their real ages on the show, in The Nearness of You, do you think it was wrong for a 35 year old to go after a 23 year old? Or was it okay?

(That might be the heaviest question I've asked here in 2 years  )

Yes! Perfectly fine, that's not THAT big an age difference! !!;) The part that wasn't fine was that she was his Sister in law and married!! But being it was my precious Max even THAT was Okay!!!:D ;)
