Michael (Joey) had been her boyfriend in high school. Sherry was also a classmate , and Joey's current girlfriend! I think? Italian IS similar to Spanish , so I was understanding a little bit! ;) I checked IMDB and that is pretty much it! ;) But the little details of exactly what was going on, I have to wait to see it in English!!! Hope my DVD comes soon!!!!;)

Let's start with the Two parter "Julie's wedding" and "Home again home again" !!! :heart: :eyes: :love:

I would love to hear you explain ODAAT to someone who didn't know it.

"One Day at a Time was a sitcom about an airline employee who marries into a family in Indianapolis. It premiered on Oct 14, 1979, and ran for 48 episodes."

"Male Jealousy" has to be one of the best early Max and one of the top 5 season 5 episodes. The friction between Max and Schneider is classic.

It's funnier and better written than the similar friction between Sam and Schneider in Season 9.

the Show, due to Mac's firing, changes after Season 6 and is never the show Whitney created ever again. It evolves. (Season 5 is "progression" Julie meeting Max and marring him is a logical evolution of the character) Why we'll never know if Nick and Alex would still have been added even if Mac stayed and stayed clean (I think we would have had the introduction of another regular boyfriend for Ann, I doubt we would have had Alex of Mac and Mike were still there.)

Again, the ratings roughly were the same for the later seasons, and it was the time-slot moves that impacted the show the last two years (and even that was a non issue as CBS wanted a 9th and 10th during the 8th as it was still one of their top comedies #16 for Season 8 and according to syndication data it was the #2 comedy on Network TV!) It still averaged 10.5 from Seasons 6-8, and the lopsided Season 9 rating was due to timeslot moves and "Dead Show Walking". (But CBS never did give up on it, aired all the episodes - even with 11 pre-emptions and 3 in-season reruns , still ran ads in TV Guide,etc

Val in her first book even mentions talk of a a Barbara/Julie spin-off after Mac returned but it faded off. (Most likely fears of a relapse which happened after all might have made CBS nervous combined with still strong ratings)

A bearded, swarthy, sexy airline employee who had great hair and the prettiest dark eyes!!:) Than he shaved the beard in the last season and was even more hot!! ;) Along with the airline job, he was a writer, a waiter, a dental receptionist for one day and a Travel agent!! He wore brown pajamas and an adorable apron.:D He made fantastic fish chowder and he curled his Sister in laws toes by kissing her!!:happyface :D

Yeah!! It was so funny because things between Max and Schneider seemed to be finally getting resolved and Max comes out with Schneider got more roast beef than him. And everyone was like OH NO!! here we go again!!! :rolleyes: And Julie took Max out in the hall and scolded him like he was a bratty little boy!!:D

I don't know the answer, but that's the frustrating thing about two different sets of edits - different lines are cut.

Antenna has/had the 22:30 minute cuts (some go back to CBS Daytime!) and as we know, Logo made new 21:00 (or so) minute edits from the uncut 24-25 minute episodes. Different choices in edits are made.

Be glad they just didn't edit the edits - the one good thing someone in programming had the good sense to order up new editing to fit the channel's needs.

Yeh, editing in general sucks. I've been comparing mostly unedited episodes on YouTube with recent logo airings and the choices in editing are interesting, such as with "male jealousy" the whole scene with max replacing the front lock is cut and they pick up with Schneider in the hallway about to (try) to enter the apartment with his pass key. They get about a minute right there.

You won't find it today. It's from a recording I had of 'So Long Mom' (Barbara moves out and Max announces the move to Texas).

Also another really good Schneider and Max scene was from the New Years eve retirement show! ;) Their vaudeville act was so cute!!! :) I was so glad to catch this ep, today!! :) And this one that is on now. "Schneider the model" has a very good interaction between Dwayne and Max!!!:) The scene where Max is comforting him while they are drinking together! ;)

And I have to miss the second half though!:( I can't leave any later than 1:15!!! I should go to the Labor board!! there should be a law that I can't work when Max eps. are on!!!:(

Aside from that weird middle window, it wasn't too bad of a supposed front match to the set. We can assume the two upstairs windows were DJ's and the girls' bedrooms.
But otherwise yeah, it was messy and tackily decorated. Too much verisimilitude in this case.:)

Aside from that weird middle window, it wasn't too bad of a supposed front match to the set. We can assume the two upstairs windows were DJ's and the girls' bedrooms.
But otherwise yeah, it was messy and tackily decorated. Too much verisimilitude in this case.:)

You know, there was no reason Michael couldn't have stayed for Season 6 Alone full or part time - Have him working out of both Texas and Indy (Two hubs?) with Julie still "back in Texas". Then No Glen,No Ron and still a strong Male lead. Mike was a much better actor than Ron Rifkin, and Ann didn't need a regular boyfriend just yet.

Later, Howard was a better actor than Rifkin, and an interesting choice. They must have known by they time he was introduced (Notice he's not in the wedding episode) that Bonnie and Val were only going to do one more year. (As we know CBS wanted 2 seasons - even with a slight dip in ratings - but then it did have a move in Season 8 back to Mondays for the last 8 episodes - same thing with "Alice" - did they settle on the next being the last and by this time and the network started moving it around earlier than originally suspected - although most of season 9 is back to Sunday)

They were willing to take the risk knowing marring Ann was the End Game. She proved her independence for 7 1/2 years, and now time for the next step. Her girls grown up and married, a successful business with the closest thing she had for a best friend, Alex was gone, and now it was time for her to go onto the next chapter - and it just happens,

I'm sure Michael had as many young girls swooning over him as Glen eventually did. (Nice looking guy, great beard - they must love him on Logo!)

In The "Mythical Season 6" He wouldn't be in every episode, but enough for his presence to be felt and for his strength as an comic actor and character would be there. That's one of the downsides of Season 7-8 where he's now written as supporting than lead (Like Mac), which gave us the upside of being "Barbara's big Seasons". Val carried seasons 7 and 8 more than Bonnie. I wonder if the producers were compensating for how quickly things went with Max and Julie by giving Barbara a "real" romance and relationship before Marriage. (Which ironically, her Mother's situation was just as quick as Julie's- things went quick with Ann and Sam)

Season 6 was a misfire,and we have Bud Wiser (He was the producer Seasons 5-8 who had to pick up the pieces more than once) for saving the show through Season 8. If Mac didn't get fired, perhaps she'd have had the baby a season earlier and stronger story-lines in general. Mac became a supporting player in her own show. Julie was never the same and the combination of the writers,producers and Mac herself that caused all this.

I often imagine Norman Lear in his office during this time muttering to himself "We should have cast that other girl as Julie"....We will never know who the 2nd choice for Julie was, or how her chemistry with Bonnie,Val,Pat and Richard would have been. Somewhere,someplace someone knows who this girl was. This is the only mystery around the series - Who was the 2nd Choice for Julie and Why didn't they recast the part when Mac was fired (Well, I always suspected they didn't want Val to "Pull a Bonnie" on a replacement) Remember, Mac was cast first for the first pilot, so we're talking maybe late 1974.

I noticed today in Girl with a past , Antenna cut out/edited Max in a few really good lines!!:( He was talking about a girl he knew when he was young who was easy like Claudia. He said the boys drove by her house honking! Julie asked if he ever did? Max said he only did once, and Julie said" Did she come running out of the house"? Max said "No her Dad did and took a hammer to his windshield!! :D :lol:

Funny stuff , skame on Antenna!! Cutting out my Baby's lines!!:(

I was thinking of an idea for a new thread as a companion to the A-Z. The thread would list Actors/Actresses we could come up with who Appeared on ODAAT that also appeared on one or more other Norman Lear shows before or after being on ODAAT.

Good examples

Jay Leno - his first scripted TV appearance was on a GOOD TIMES (The VD episode!) and later he appeared on ODAAT as the depressed guy in the Clinic. (Which was the better of his two Norman Lear guest shots)

Michael Lembeck was on "Mary Hartman..." for a story-arc before being cast as Max a couple of years later. (I think he might be the only Regular cast member to do a Norman Lear series before/after not counting Mac's appearance on the new show.)

John Putch did an "All in The Family" episode (Playing a Boy Scout!) a few years earlier before reoccurring as Bob. (I really like Bob, wish Barbara was nicer to him sometimes. I think her only fault was not seeing what was right in front of her...and she ends up marrying a guy just as nice, but not as nerdy as Bob!)

I'll say it again, without the 3rd Lead, the workload was more and more on Bonnie and Val - Michael and Mac were supporting when they return, not leads anymore (Although they got primary story lines still) and the show reflects this. Bonnie and Val (and more increasingly Val, first as the only daughter "at home" and then when Mark was introduced) were two actresses doing a three lead show. The Sad thing is, Val benefited by Mac's downfall,but it cost the series at least one extra season in the end.

No wonder they were tired by the end of Season 8 - they had spent 4 seasons doing the work of three leads. I'm counting all of Season 5 because of Mac's decline - you can tell she's not the actress she was in the earlier seasons - Adding Michael covers a multitude of sins as much as it benefited the show's chemistry

Mac was not the actress she was - just look at "Runaways", "JC and Julie" , "The Older Man" against ANY of her 5th Season shows. The only episode that comes close is the Wedding episode - perhaps the last of her good pre-"Vacation"/"Firing" episodes. Think about it, Julie Centric Multi-part Stories opened Seasons 2 and 3! THAT'S how good she WAS!

Addiction and Drug Use is a tough thing to break when you grow up in it's culture, and while it has a "happy" (We hope so) ending, Mac's story is like a TV Movie of the Week. Daughter of a 60's rock star lands a top 10 TV show from TV's top producer but Drug addiction eventually ruins her stardom, not once but twice.

What color looked best on Barbara/Valerie wardrobe wise?

Mac's absence did leave a huge hole; I agree. So much of the earlier seasons was built on the conflict between Ann and Julie. Ann and Barbara had their squabbles as any parent and child do, but theirs was never a tempestuous relationship.
I commend the show for at least handling the changing cast dynamics in more realistic ways. They could have morphed Barbara into a rebellious teen, or brought in a surrogate Julie, say a cousin who comes to live there for a while and brings disharmony with her. Too many shows just introduced replicas to fill a gap; Happy Days being a main example.

OMG!!! This is FUNNY!!!:D In my last post I chose Urobilin at random as a color not good for Val because I never heard of that color , and what a good choice I chose because it wouldn't look good on ANYONE!!!(Except Michael of course, he would look good in ANY COLOR)!!:D ;)

Urobilin or urochrome is the chemical primarily responsible for the yellow color of urine. It is a linear tetrapyrrole compound that, along with the related compound urobilinogen, are degradation products of the cyclic tetrapyrrole heme.

It is a sickly looking off dark yellow like Gulden's mustard!!!:eek: :p

Who says making Valerie Bertinelli jokes isn't educational? We learned new colors today.

I saw the Logo Girl with a Past version last night and I agree with Bonnie about the cut Antenna scene. I think I would have remembered Barbara using the term "bridal orgy".

Mac's absence did leave a huge hole; I agree. So much of the earlier seasons was built on the conflict between Ann and Julie.

Which was replaced by conflicts between Ann and HER Mother.

Tentative advance listings for next week show the show looping around after Season 7 back to Season 1 on may 10th in the morning after airing the rest of season 7 overnight - with the usual skipped episodes! Wed-Fri is Season 1 complete. Perfect Fit, and some of those are due to air on Sunday May 7th!

What is listed now shows some major skipping around for Season 7 for some reason. (13 episodes skipped - more than the average of 6) Clearly they are holding back episodes for the outside slots or next cycle as we've seen in the past. Why they program like this it's beyond me.

Not the first time they did something like this - they did the same thing to Alice - Ran to a point, looped back and then continued where they left off.

I wonder if they are still editing seasons 8 & 9.

Tentative advance listings for next week show the show looping around after Season 7 back to Season 1 on may 10th in the morning after airing the rest of season 7 overnight - with the usual skipped episodes! Wed-Fri is Season 1 complete. Perfect Fit, and some of those are due to air on Sunday May 7th!

What is listed now shows some major skipping around for Season 7 for some reason. (13 episodes skipped - more than the average of 6) Clearly they are holding back episodes for the outside slots or next cycle as we've seen in the past. Why they program like this it's beyond me.

Not the first time they did something like this - they did the same thing to Alice - Ran to a point, looped back and then continued where they left off.

I would contact the person selling that item? If it's DVD R it may not even have a region and can play on any player, but still I'd contact first just to be certain, also if it is DVD R it can be touchy on what it will play on regardless.

I just noticed something - Valerie is a year older Than Barbara (Val was 15 when she did season one, Barbara was 14) and of course Mac was actually The same age as Julie (16) - In real life the girls are only 6 months apart in age - Mac is Nov 10th,1959 and Val is April 23,1960

Did they settle 14/16 from day one, as I recall they played with the ages by a year or so the first season in dialog?

They are doing something similar with ALICE with Seasons 6&7, then looping to 3 and 4, with no Season 1&2 episodes tentative (Ok, now I'm wondering how many runs they have licences on each. Although their deal with Warners for ALICE may be different with Sony and ODDAT)

Both Shows have 9 seasons, but ALICE has 7 less episodes (It was affected differently by the writers strike of 1981, and a shorter final season of 16 shows with the series ended in March of 1985.)

Holding last two seasons to keep things "fresh", or still editing them or both? Who knows? At least we'll get two runs on every episode of both series.

Awaiting confirmation of these episodes, but this is what is due this weekend.

I was thinking about what they were doing with Alex and Nick - a counterpoint to Ann and her early days of her divorce (It's implied that Nick and his wife have not been divorced long) "Sunday Father" feels like a retread of "Ann's Decision" - it's not an exact copy, but it has elements similar.

They should have gotten rid of Alex when they killed off Nick - they already started to increase Grandma and Francine, they were introducing Mark, and Julie and Max were reoccuring. But guess what, the show was still top 10 and Glen was a "teen-idol" and popular. (I don't honestly think he hurt or helped the ratings at this point)

Now We know how Bonnie felt about the character, but I don't ever recall her (publicly) saying anything ill about Glen.

But the problem is - ANY teen male would have become a teen-idol on a show with a large teen female audience. The same thing would have happened. He's a heck of a nice fellow these days, but it was the wrong part for him. The lacked the "boy next door" element. (Even when he got older, he was close to it, but still not there.) Nice kid, but kinda dull - even after his dad died. Val as Barbara has the "girl next door" vibe, and that is why she became more popular than Mac. Here we are 42 years later still talking about Barbara the teen-ager and Barbara The young house-wife.

What they were trying to do is recreate young Barbara as a Boy - think about it. There's even a connection between the two when the subject of dealing with divorce comes up - it's usual Barbara and Alex, or Barbara concerned about Alex. It's not played up enough,(I can think of two episodes off the top of my head but can't recall any others) both went/are going through the same thing - a missed opportunity of bonding between the two. But they took Barbara into a different direction season 7 and let Ann be the one to deal with Alex.

I'd say next to how they handled "Good Times" (James Should have been recast), this is the biggest misfire of any Norman Lear Show. (Perhaps killing off Edith might be the third one.)

But again, Bud Wiser, Good Bless him as Producer kept the show good for it's toughest 4 seasons (5-8) CBS was happy, the numbers were strong, the show was running in Daytime and then Syndication, the network begged Val and Bonnie for two more seasons. (#9-#10) (The lower rating for season 8 reflects that time-slot move mid-season not the popularity - but #16 is still top 20 and better than most of CBS's show at that point,and they just lost MASH which hurt CBS)

Glen is a cool guy, I actually had a brief exchange with him on Facebook recently about the teen-actors/actress community of the early 1980's which he brought up in a post. (The whole "real friends" thing)

I'm not just saying this cause I think he's hot! He's a very underrated actor!! :( It's sad. Seemed he was type cast and stereotyped as Ponch from CHIPS and wasn't really taken seriously!!! :( But I've seen him in other stuff and he is QUITE good!!! Seems dramatic acting is his best genre!!

Two REALLY good obscure movies Erik starred in were 'Cross and the switchblade" also starring Pat Boone ! One of Erik's first roles 1971, he played a real life gang member who found religion! VERY INTENSE movie and another movie late 80's after CHIPS , "The last riders"! He plays an outlaw biker type guy!! ;) I own both of these movies and have seen them several times! ;)

Erik is my Ex!!!:love: Before I fell in love with Michael!!:heart: But I still love him!! ;) But Michael has my :heart: now!!!

But watching Erik today!!! REALLY that boy really is a good actor, and it's a shame he really didn't get that much more recognition besides CHIPS and as good looking as he was too!!:( :heart:

Here's a question for the group - when did you discover the series?

I know I watching the series by 4th season when the show moved to the 8-8:30 slots (I Would have been 10) So It'd say 1978-1982 were the years I really followed the show weekly (must have had my first crush on Valerie around then) and did see the last episode on CBS. Those Sunday Nights stick out in my mind, along with the odd daytime rerun episode caught during summer or school holiday.

Of course I watched the show in syndication regularly when it was released in the fall of 1982. I honestly don't have much of a Memory of Season 8 or 9 on CBS, but I'm sure I caught the odd episode in those last couple of seasons on CBS before they went into the syndication package in 1984 and 1985.

You know,Fall 1979-Summer 1982 was a great Sunday night for Comedy on CBS with Archie Bunker's Place, One Day at a Time, Alice and The Jeffersons (although due to bedtime, I'd miss Alice and The Jeffersons most weeks during the school year)
