Don Johnson & Edward James Olmos Didn't Get Along - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I saw the E True Hollywood Story on Miami Vice about a couple of months ago. I found out that Don & Edward didn't get along. U could barely hear Edward talk on the show, his voice was so low LOL. There would be scenes on the show where Edward didn't even wanna be in the same room with Don. My grandfather cracks me up cause he said whenever he used to watch Miami Vice, he said Edward only said a few words LOL. I noticed Edward didn't talk that much. What was Edward's name on the show? Does TNN still show reruns of Miami Vice during the day?

I knew that they didn't get along when, a few months into the show, Olmos replaced the previous Lieutenant. I didn't know that the friction between them lasted for any length of time. His character was Lieutenant Martin Castillo. Yes, he did talk in a very quiet, emotionless way. I think it was to make him seem like a tough guy with a very serious personality, who didn't reveal much emotionally.

Martin used to be DEA I think and he was a man of very, very, few words.

I saw a old episode of Miami Vice several weeks ago and i saw the pilot episode when the hispanic guy that played on Sanford and Son tv show as Lamont's friend Jose was the police chief before Edward came on the show. What's his name? I also saw him in Deep Cover movie with Larry Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum.

You're thinking of Gregory Sierra. He played Julio on Sanford & Son.

Yeah that's who I'm talking about. He was also in A Low Down Dirty Shame movie with Keenan Ivory Wayans and Jada Pinkett. He played a police chief. That's a good movie.

I collect MAD magazine and the issue in which they satirize the show they poke fun that the reason Castillo is always serious is because he's jeoulous of the ritzy snazzy clothes Crocket and Tubbs get to wear.

Ironically, Castillo and his quiet intensity was the counterweight to hothead Tubbs and volatile Crockett, the perfect supervisor/mentor to keep them in check and keep the whole operation on an even keel.

To add to my previous comment, Edward James Olmos from what I gathered, was the only main actor of the show that had a contract with artistic control about the character he played. That meant that he was the one who decided all habits and personal features of Castillo. For instance, his desk was always clean and his officers had to knock before entering his office. This apparently, annoyed Don Johnson greatly because he was used to co-direct and dictate all details on the set.
