When and how did sitcoms evolve and move away from the "Honeymooners" format

What I mean by Honeymooners-type of format is that the show was essentially a filmed play. This meant that the set was merely a backdrop for the drama being performed. That kind of makes sense since it was originally a recurring sketch on Cavalcade of Stars and The Jackie Gleason Show.

But did television networks and producers basically, stop making sitcoms (at least stylistic-wise) like The Honeymooners come the late 1950s and '60s? Was it mostly due as technology advanced and production evolved?
