Default The Tragedy of Curly Howard is Worse Than You Can Imagine

Did you know Curly Howard was not the original third member of The Three Stooges? Did you know his famous shaved head, one of the most recognizable looks in comedy history, may have caused him deep insecurity off camera?

Curly Howard is remembered as the wildest and most beloved member of The Three Stooges, the performer behind the barking, spinning, squealing, and “nyuk-nyuk-nyuk” laugh that became part of American comedy history. But behind that explosive screen personality was a man whose life was far more painful than many fans realize.

Born Jerome Lester Horwitz, Curly entered the act after his brother Shemp left Ted Healy’s group. Once Moe, Larry, and Curly became The Three Stooges at Columbia Pictures, their short films turned into comedy classics. Curly quickly became the breakout star, thanks to his physical timing, strange vocal sounds, and fearless improvisation.

But fame came at a cost. Curly struggled with insecurity, failed marriages, heavy eating and drinking, money trouble, and a demanding work schedule. As the Stooges’ popularity grew, his health began to collapse. By the mid-1940s, audiences could see his energy fading on screen. His voice changed. His movements slowed. His body was giving warnings that could no longer be ignored.

In 1946, during the filming of Half-Wits Holiday, Curly suffered a devastating stroke that ended his career with The Three Stooges. His brother Shemp returned to the act, at first with the hope that Curly might one day recover. Sadly, Curly’s health continued to decline. He suffered more strokes, spent time in hospitals and care facilities, and died in 1952 at just 48 years old.

This is the heartbreaking story of the man behind the laughs, and why Curly Howard’s tragedy is even sadder than most people imagine.
