Why didn't many of Rhoda's close friends stick around

Also, why exactly were said "close friends" whereabouts never explained after they suddenly departed? First, it was Rhoda's old high school friend Myrna. After being a fairly recurring character through Season 2 and even going into the window-decorating business alongside Rhoda, Myrna and the window-decorating business for that matter, are never seen nor mentioned again.

Then, we get Sally Gallagher as Myrna's "successor" of sorts. And just about every key storyline in the first half of the third season always involves Sally together with Rhoda and Brenda. And yet, following the "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" episode, Sally is never mentioned nor seen on the show again.

Also for most of Season 3, Gary Levy becomes a recurring character and stays all the way through Season 4. Gary by this time, is seemingly always in the apartment with Rhoda and Brenda. And yet, come Season 5, Gary is said to be 'moving to Chicago' to work for a major retailer. So, at least unlike with Myrna and Sally, we're given an explanation for where exactly he went off to.

I think it's because when people think of Rhoda Morgenstern, they often pair her with Mary Richards. I also do wonder what happened to Sandy (Brenda's best friend)

Idk if you were replying to me or the original poster, but I was referring to Sandy, played by Melanie Mayron. I do like Susie though!
