There was one Golden Girls episode that sparked some controversy, even though it was actually progressive in the 1980s. |

Pulling this episode was beyond ridiculous. The entire scene is comedy gold trying to break racial stereotypes. Yet the censors never cared to watch and understand the writing which were trying to break down stereotypes. Dorothy was thought to be the maid by the black family. The black family were the ones that had issues with their daughter dating a white man. The black mom keeps thinking Dorothy is the maid and expecting to meet Michael's black parents and in comes Blanche and Rose with mud on their face. Rose instantly tells the black mother, "we are not really black this is just mud on our face." The entire scene is based on reverse racial stereotypes and was very cleverly written. It was not black face. It was not meant to mock or humiliate black people. The white family had no issues with race in their son's relationship. It was the black family that did which led to a brilliant scene. It made people think about racial stereotypes.
