Growing Pains Was a Progressive Sitcom

Growing Pains was one of the more progressive sitcoms of the time, and one of the best sitcoms about family. It centers around a family with a dad who decides to move his psychiatry practice back home so his wife can go back to work as a reporter. Their kids are old enough now to fend for themselves, and when they need sage advice, Dr. Jason Sever (Alan Thicke) is the perfect one to give it to them.

Naturally, every episode involved hijinks, particularly involving the eldest troublemaking son, Mike (Kirk Cameron). The sitcom went further down the rabbit hole of cheesiness when it introduced a new child who magically grew up faster than she should have, and when the family adopted a homeless kid named Luke, played by now A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio.

Growing Pains was reflective of the time, and it's one of many similar sitcoms from that era. But there's something especially corny about the storylines and the way every episode involved some type of teaching from Jason's wise words.
