Default The Forgotten Morning Show That Broke ESPN

If you’re watching ESPN before noon these days, chances are two or more people are yelling at each other about sports under the “guise” of debate. But how did we get here?

ESPN Cold Pizza may have forever altered the history of sports television. It was completely accidental, but this forgotten morning show started featuring debate segments as a way to turn round flagging ratings. Dubbed 1st and 10, this begat First Take which begat a bunch of copycats which begat the nonsense of today.

To pinch another ESPN show title, there are reasons you can’t blame Cold Pizza. For nearly four years, the show sort of groped around blindly on ESPN2 for relevancy, never really sure what it wanted to be or who it was targeting. For the Worldwide Leader, they were just trying new things and exploring ways to expand the audience.

At its best, ratings were middling. At its worst, ratings were in the tens of thousands. Some try to reflect back on Cold Pizza with rose-tinted glasses. While it was admirable that ESPN tried something way outside the box, the reality, both then and today, was simple.

Cold Pizza was a poorly executed idea from the start. Not because of the people involved, some of whom were actually quite good and have gone on to better endeavors. No, Cold Pizza was a bad idea because it was truly a show for no one. Nonetheless, here is the history of the Forgotten Morning Show that broke ESPN.

Why does everything feel like a debate now?

In this video, Joon Lee breaks down the history of the hot take in sports TV and how it evolved into a dominant force across cable news, debate shows, and social media. From the rise of opinion-driven sports talk shows to viral debates on social media, we explore how hot takes shape modern media culture and why it seems like everyone's addicted to them.

Why are hot takes so popular? And what does their influence mean for journalism, sports coverage, and online discourse today?

Watch to learn how hot takes went from sports TV gimmick to a powerful media trend.

Explore the evolution of sports media from local radio arguments to the intense, debate-driven culture of modern cable television. This documentary examines how the prioritization of engagement and outrage over factual reporting reshaped sports programming and eventually influenced the broader landscape of politics and public discourse.
