Why were Cliff and Clair always so stingy with their money

I mean, Cliff was medical doctor and his wife was an attorney in NEW YORK CITY. They presumably, would've or should've been earning well into the upper six figures annually in combined income. That's approximately, at least 10% of that amount in earnings. And yet, there is an episode where Cliff haggles over the price of a used Plymouth when he easily could have afforded to purchase her a brand new vehicle. Hell, the guy who was offering the vehicle for sale was doing so for price that was well below what he could have received selling it to a car collector.

This goes into the next point. In the Gordon Gartrell episode, Theo wants an expensive shirt to wear to impress a girl. His father, while earning well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars annually proceeds to belittle his son's fashion choice when it's clear that the Huxtables could have more than afforded to dress the entire family in the fashion line with no appreciable dent in their lifestyle or savings. So when you get right down to it, Theo is asking his father for a shirt that likely (ironically) costs less than the Nikes he is wearing in the episode and his father not only refuses.
