"Tron: Ares" Opens w/ Low $33.5M during Columbus Day Weekend
Tron: Ares’ Stumbles with $33.5 Million Debut
by Rebecca Rubin Oct. 12, 2025 Disney’s sci-fi sequel Tron: Ares failed to connect in its box office debut, collecting a disappointing $33.5 million from 4,000 North American theaters over the weekend. It’s a weak start, even for a five-decade-old franchise that’s never been a commercial juggernaut. The trouble is that Tron: Ares carries a massive $180 million price tag, not including the many millions the studio spent on marketing. Overseas, Tron: Ares didn’t make up much ground, adding another $27 million and putting the final global number at $60 million through Sunday. In second place, Channing Tatum’s dramedy Roofman arrived on the lower end of expectations with $8 million from 3,340 locations in its opening weekend. Third place went to Leonardo DiCaprio’s comedic action epic One Battle After Another with $6.7 million from 3,127 theaters, declining 38% from the prior weekend. So far, the film has earned $54.5 million in North America and $138 million globally. At No. 6, Sony’s faith-based Soul on Fire debuted to $3 million from 1,720 theaters. The inspirational story, about a man who survived fire burns that covered his body, has resonated with moviegoers, evidenced by the “A” grade on CinemaScore. In eighth place, Dwayne Johnson’s R-rated sports drama The Smashing Machine cratered by 70% in its second weekend with $1.7 million from 3,321 venues. The film, which cost $50 million, has grossed $10.1 million to date and is shaping up to be a major money loser for A24. In limited release, director Luca Guadagnino’s #MeToo thriller After the Hunt earned $154,467 from six screens, translating to $25,745 per location. A24’s psychological drama If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, earned $89,164 on four locations in New York and Los Angeles over the weekend, averaging $22,291 per screen. Jennifer Lopez' musical Kiss of the Spider Woman bowed far below projections at No. 13 with a paltry $840,000 from 1,300 screens. https://variety.com/2025/film/box-of...an-1236544376/ October 10-13, 2025: Weekend Studio Estimates 1. Tron: Ares $36,855,366 2. Roofman $9,241,796 3. One Battle After Another $7,922,980 / $55,748,942 4. Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie $4,489,855 / $27,572,250 5. The Conjuring: Last Rites $3,575,338 / $173,082,410 6. Soul on Fire $3,226,724 7. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie - Infinity Castle $2,727,099 / $129,114,205 8. The Smashing Machine $2,170,739 / $10,181,196 9. The Strangers: Chapter 2 $1,841,746 / $13,789,545 10. Good Boy $1,408,707 / $4,911,714 |

I cannot figure out why Tron was meant to have another sequel in the first place. Because once 2010's Tron Legacy debuted in theaters that was enough. My dad used to play the Tron arcade game when I was a baby and he loved the game so much. But why Disney decided to make Tron Ares was just simply to cash in on the popularity of the Tron Lightcycle ride at Walt Disney World and Disney thought another Tron movie would do well
