Question Cast Members Who “Market Corrected” Other Cast Members

If you’re not familiar, Wesley Morris coined the phrase “market correction” for when one actor takes over another actor’s niche, and sort of replaces them in pop culture. So the example often used is Emma Stone “market correcting” Lindsay Lohan.

In SNL terms, that might mean a cast member being hired to directly replace a “type” who’s just left, or gradually taking over the roles of another alum while they’re both still on the cast.

According to ChatGPT:
Quote:
That’s a great and really interesting way to look at SNL casting — and “market correction” absolutely fits how the show often operates. Lorne has always liked to keep a balance of “types,” and when someone leaves (or even if they’re still around but getting less heat), another cast member often steps in to fill that niche.

Here are some of the most commonly cited or plausible “market correction” moments in SNL history, using Wesley Morris’s sense of the term:

🧔 “Utility White Guy / Everyman” Type
  • Phil Hartman → Darrell Hammond → Jason Sudeikis → Mikey Day → Andrew Dismukes
    • Phil was the ultimate reliable straight man. Hammond eventually slid into that role (often anchoring sketches even when not the star), then Sudeikis picked up the “dad/host/authority” niche, then Mikey carried that mantle for years. This past season, Dismukes was clearly getting many of those parts — warm but wry straight man, or the “normal guy reacting to chaos.”

😂 “Broad Character Woman / Wacky Energy”
  • Cheri Oteri → Kristen Wiig → Chloe Fineman / Sarah Sherman
    • Oteri brought loud, highly physical comedic characters. Wiig expanded that archetype with even more versatility and became the go-to utility woman. In recent seasons, Chloe often filled that “big character” slot (celeb impressions + sketch anchors), but Sarah Sherman’s weirdness and loud energy have started to push her into the spotlight in a way that sometimes overlaps and overtakes that space.

💁 “Cute Ingenue / Girl Next Door”
  • Gilda Radner → Jan Hooks → Molly Shannon / Ana Gasteyer (in some sketches) → Nasim Pedrad → Cecily Strong → Ego Nwodim / Heidi Gardner
    • This isn’t one-to-one, but there’s a long lineage of the “everywoman” who can ground sketches or pivot into character. Cecily was a major anchor here, and Heidi has inherited a lot of those warm straight-woman roles. Ego’s been doing similar work but with a slightly more sardonic, modern energy.

🧑*🎤 “Goofy Young Guy / Energy Guy”
  • Adam Sandler / Chris Farley → Jimmy Fallon / Chris Kattan → Andy Samberg / Bill Hader → Pete Davidson → Marcello Hernández
    • This is a “high-energy young dude who’s funny even when not saying anything” slot. Fallon and Kattan picked up where Sandler/Farley left off; Samberg and Hader (in very different ways) were the 2000s version; Pete Davidson owned that “young guy presence” in the 2010s, and Marcello’s clearly starting to take some of that space.

🕺🏾 “Versatile Impressionist / Chameleon”
  • Dana Carvey → Darrell Hammond → Bill Hader → Jay Pharoah / Melissa Villaseñor → James Austin Johnson
    • This one’s especially clear. The show often keeps at least one “mimic” who can do political figures and celebrities. Johnson’s takeover of Trump and Biden impressions was a textbook example of a “market correction” — he didn’t just join the cast, he supplanted others doing those impressions.

🌟 “Headliner Star”
  • Eddie Murphy → Will Ferrell → Kristen Wiig → Kate McKinnon → Bowen Yang / Sarah Sherman (emerging)
    • The show often consolidates focus around a dominant star. Bowen and Sarah are arguably both being positioned to fill the vacuum Kate left — but in very different flavors.

🧓 “Older Authority Figure / Straight Woman”
  • Jane Curtin → Nora Dunn → Ana Gasteyer → Cecily Strong → Heidi Gardner
    • This is the “anchor newswoman / mom / boss” type who can play authority in a sketch without distracting from the joke.

Specific “Correction” Examples People on Reddit Often Mention:
  • Emma Stone market correcting Lindsay Lohan (in film) → analogous to
  • Chloe Fineman being “corrected” by Sarah Sherman in certain sketches.
  • James Austin Johnson taking over Trump/Biden from Alec Baldwin and others (a massive correction).
  • Taran Killam stepping into many of the utility roles Bill Hader was known for after he left.
  • Kate McKinnon rapidly filling Kristen Wiig’s shoes after Wiig’s departure — similar energy, strong impressions, the “main event” of sketches.
  • Bowen Yang increasingly inheriting the buzzy, meme-friendly breakout star lane after Kate’s departure.

👉 It’s important to say: this doesn’t mean the earlier person was replaced or less talented. It’s more about how the show’s structure and sketch archetypes often create these “lanes” that get filled as cast members rotate out.

Would you like me to focus on a specific era (e.g., 1990s, 2010s, current cast) and list more “market corrections” just from that period?
