His character was every bit as iconic as Archie Bunker, but for some reason, the show never really got Emmy love except for Isabel Sanford winning.

Marla Gibbs was Emmy nominated 5 straight years from 1981-1985. But she ran into tough competition with Loretta Swit and Rhea Perlman.

Tony Randall and Jack Klugman both competing in the lead actor category lowered the possibility of someone from other shows being nominated. 1976 is strange, going down to just four nominees that year doesn't make sense when it had been five starting in 1971. 1977 it went right back to five nominees.
