Default How the Blacklist erased the legacy of sitcom inventor Gertrude Berg

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2...-of-the-sitcom

Gertrude Berg's “The Goldbergs” was a bold, beloved portrait of a Jewish family. Then the blacklist obliterated her legacy.

Quote:
The Blacklist, specifically the Red Scare of the McCarthy era, severely impacted Gertrude Berg's career and legacy as the creator and star of the original "The Goldbergs". Berg's refusal to fire her longtime co-star, Philip Loeb, after he was accused of communist ties led to CBS and General Foods canceling their support for the show. This, coupled with Berg's own long-held political beliefs, resulted in her being labeled a "communist fellow traveler," which effectively destroyed her career and recognition.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
The McCarthy Era and the Blacklist:
The Red Scare, fueled by Senator Joseph McCarthy's accusations of communist infiltration, created a climate of fear and suspicion in the entertainment industry. Individuals were blacklisted for their alleged affiliations with communism or left-leaning ideologies.

Gertrude Berg's Stand:
Berg refused to fire Loeb, despite pressure from CBS, General Foods, and even the U.S. Senate's Internal Security Committee. This decision, along with her own known political beliefs, led to her being labeled a communist fellow traveler.

Cancellation and Impact:
CBS and General Foods, the show's sponsor, canceled their support for "The Goldbergs" in June 1951 because Berg wouldn't remove Loeb. This effectively destroyed what could have been a brilliant career and left Berg's legacy overshadowed by the blacklist.

Legacy Erased:
The blacklist not only ended Berg's ability to produce "The Goldbergs" but also severely impacted her ability to work in the industry. She was effectively erased from the public's awareness as a groundbreaking sitcom creator and performer.

"The Goldbergs" and its Importance:
"The Goldbergs" was a pioneering sitcom, a bold portrait of a Jewish family that paved the way for many family sitcoms that followed. Berg's work was innovative and influential, but the blacklist erased much of her recognition for this work.
