Default ‘Miami Vice’ Movie in the Works with Joseph Kosinski Directing

Joseph Kosinski is headed to Miami. The filmmaker behind the $1.49 billion hit Top Gun: Maverick is attached to direct a Miami Vice movie for Universal, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Nightcrawler filmmaker Dan Gilroy is penning the script, with The Batman producer Dylan Clark producing through Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski producing through Monolith.

Miami Vice began life as the Anthony Yerkovich-created TV series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two undercover Miami police officers known for their love of pastel suits. (“The ambition of the show was to break the form of everything that had come before,” executive producer Michael Mann told THR last year of the series, which ran from 1984-90 on NBC.) Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell starred in a 2006 feature of the same name that Mann directed and which earned $163.7 million globally.

Kosinski has been kicking the tires on the project since last year, though Miami Vice will not be the next project he directs, with his busy schedule including a UFO conspiracy thriller that Apple won in a bidding war in March. He next has the Brad Pitt racing drama F1 due out in June.

Top Gun: Maverick turned Kosinski into one of the most in-demand filmmakers in town after directing features such as Oblivion and Tron: Legacy. He is repped by CAA, Untitled and Sloane Offer.

Gilroy, whose credits also include The Bourne Legacy and work on brother Tony Gilroy’s Andor, is repped by CAA, LBI and Howard Abrahamson.

Clark, also known for Matt Reeves’ Planet of the Apes movies and Kosinski’s Oblivion, is represented by CAA and 42West.

Top Gun: Maverick Reunion Set for Miami Vice Reboot

Quote:

Raised on the Canadian Prairies, Lee Freitag is a senior author at CBR, with more than three years of experience in entertainment and pop culture journalism. While CBR remains the go-to spot to find Lee's latest articles, his movie and TV news coverage has also been featured on SuperHeroHype and ComingSoon.

Joseph Kosinski's Miami Vice reboot is quickly coming together. Just five months after the project was first announced, the actors who will step into the roles of Sonny and Rico have reportedly been found.

According to Nexus Point News, Glen Powell and Michael B. Jordan are in talks to star as James “Sonny” Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, respectively, in the Miami Vice reboot. If the casting proves true, it would reunite Kosinski with Powell, who appeared in the former's Top Gun: Maverick as the scene-stealing Jake "Hangman" Seresin. Powell's other notable film credits include Anyone But You, Hit Man, and Twisters. As for Jordan, he's best known for his starring roles in Fruitvale Station, Black Panther, and the Creed trilogy. He is currently directing and starring in a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM Studios.

Announced back in April, the Miami Vice reboot is in development at Universal, which also released the 2006 remake starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Kosinski will direct from a screenplay penned by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler, Andor), based on an earlier draft by Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick). Miami Vice is expected to be Kosinski's follow-up project to F1, which he directed and produced for Warner Bros. and Apple. The sports drama movie, which stars Brad Pitt as an aging race car driver, was a major hit for Kosinski and the studios, grossing over $625 million worldwide. A sequel to F1 is now being explored by WB and Apple.

Miami Vice Was a Cornerstone of '80s Culture

Created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, the latter of whom ended up writing and directing the 2006 remake, Miami Vice aired on NBC for five seasons, from 1984 to 1989. The series starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as Metro-Dade Police Department detectives Sonny and Rico, respectively, who work undercover in Miami, Florida. Unlike other police procedurals at the time, Miami Vice drew upon 1980s culture, featuring contemporary pop and rock music, sports cars, men's fashion, and stylized visuals.

While exact plot details for the Miami Vice reboot remain under wraps, it has been reported that Kosinski and Universal will not update the characters and setting for the modern day, with the project instead expected to explore "the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami." Additionally, the reboot will pull inspiration from the show's pilot episode, "Brother's Keeper," as well as the rest of the first season. After directing the billion-dollar hit Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski has emerged as one of the industry's top filmmakers, with WB and Apple acquiring F1 only after an intense bidding war involving all the major studios and streamers. Kosinski's upcoming untitled conspiracy thriller film, which is reportedly centered around UFOs, was also the talk of the town earlier this year, with Apple Studios ultimately landing the project. Zach Baylin is writing the screenplay for that movie.

Miami Vice is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2027.

According to Deadline, the upcoming Miami Vice movie from F1 and Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski may have just found the actor to play Ricardo Tubbs. It seems Creed star Michael B. Jordan is in early talks to take on the iconic role originated by Philip Michael Thomas for five seasons on the hit NBC series.

In the original series, Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs is a New York City detective who moves to Miami to pursue the drug kingpin who murdered his brother. There, he meets with beach bum/cowboy Vice cop Sonny Crockett, and the two join forces to take down bad guys in the ever-failing War on Drugs.

While he wasn't my personal first choice, I did mention Michael B. Jordan in my earlier opinion piece about casting the film (linked below). But now that I think of it, I think Jordan has what it takes to translate Tubbs' effortless charm and swagger, a veneer he uses to cover up his righteous sense of justice and deeply empathic sensitivity.

If Jordan gets locked in, then we can move on to Crockett. I'm personally rooting for Glen Powell, but they'll need to find someone who can still project cowboy energy while wearing white linen and cozy loafers. That's easier said than done.

Miami Vice is currently scheduled for release on August 6, 2027.
