In the episode where Wilona is hesitant to talk to Penny about the "bird and the bees" and why her schoolmate has "the mumps" in her stomach, it's like I said, intimated that Wilona and Florida knew each other in high school. However, it's clear earlier in the show's run, that both James and Florida are older than her.

The later suggestion that Florida and Willona were high school classmates is a significant continuity error within the series:
Florida’s Education Arc: In the Season 2 episode "Florida Goes to School," it is explicitly stated that Florida dropped out in the 10th grade. The episode centers on her struggle to finally get her high school equivalency diploma (GED), a goal James initially opposes. The Retcon: Despite this established history, the writers in later seasons—particularly after Florida's return in Season 6—began referencing a shared childhood and high school years to explain their deep bond. In "Stomach Mumps," the dialogue treats them as lifelong peers, essentially ignoring that Florida had previously been portrayed as older and as a dropout who only recently completed her education. Narrative Necessity: This "retcon" allowed Willona to act as a direct equal to Florida. By making them "old schoolmates," the show could more easily justify Willona’s role as the family's closest confidante and "aunt" figure to the children. In reality, the actress Esther Rolle (Florida) was nearly 20 years older than Ja'net DuBois (Willona), making the high school classmate claim even more jarring for viewers aware of the earlier seasons. |
