Before Grey's Anatomy became a top medical drama today there was St. Elsewhere and when St. Elsewhere debuted in 1982 along with Cheers NBC knew that they had a hit on their hands and with a fine cast of stars such as Denzel Washington Ed Begley Jr. Howie Mandel and Mark Harmon St. Elsewhere proved to be a huge hit. While many people think of Howie Mandel as a comedian St. Elsewhere is actually the show that showcased Howie's serious side. Although it may seem odd that a comedian can star in a medical drama Howie Mandel as the smart Dr. Wayne Fiscus actually made him a huge household name and with Howie on St. Elsewhere he expanded his career even farther. The other star Mark Harmon made a huge name for himself while not as popular as Howie Mandel Mark Harmon's role on St. Elsewhere actually turned Mark into a superstar and prior to St. Elsewhere Mark Harmon was a commercial actor and now he's on NCIS. But if you ever watched the first episode of St. Elsewhere before in your life or have never ever seen the show you can see that St. Elsewhere is not just a medical drama it actually feels like a medical soap opera like General Hospital and as you watch more St. Elsewhere episodes it really can seem like a soap opera. By the time St. Elsewhere ended in 1988 NBC knew this show was a success and would have other medical dramas that would be smash hits with ER in the 90's and if you look at ER it's essentially a newer version of St. Elsewhere and feels like St. Elsewhere too. But it is a surprise that St. Elsewhere has never been shown on TV other than Tubi and METV should add it to it's lineup someday
