TV Tom Selleck Feels “Frustrated” at CBS for Ending "Blue Bloods"

Tom Selleck on Feeling “Frustrated” by CBS’ Decision to End "Blue Bloods"
by Natalie Oganesyan
October 4, 2024

Tom Selleck admitted to being “frustrated” over CBS‘ decision to end the long-running police procedural "Blue Bloods".

In a new interview with TV Insider, Selleck — who has portrayed NYPD police commissioner Frank Reagan across nearly 300 episodes, 14 seasons and just as many years — discussed feeling that the primetime series has been “always taken for granted.

I’m kind of frustrated. During those last eight shows [Blue Bloods will conclude with eight episodes that begin airing Oct. 18 at 10 p.m.], I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful,” he said, adding that the series was a top performer during last year’s broadcast season in terms of total viewership, cracking the Top 10 when one discounts the top football programs.

Despite averaging 8.1 million viewers — a feat in today’s broadcast landscape — the series is on its way out, likely due to the financial burden required to keep a long-running show going.

He continued, “I’m not going to turn into a bitter old guy saying, ‘Get off my lawn!’ I don’t believe in holding grudges, but if you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe.

My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out. I remember after the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I said, ‘I’ve got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday.’ Well, there was no Monday. It’s just going to take a while.

Tom Selleck Details "Frustrating" Cancellation of "Blue Bloods" after 25% Pay Cut
by Kathleen Perricone
July 29, 2026

The cancellation of "Blue Bloods" still feels like a crime to Tom Selleck.

Two years after the long-running CBS police procedural came to an end, the show’s star reflected on the “frustrating” drama surrounding the final season in the latest episode of Ted Danson’s podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name.

Blue Bloods was a labor of love… I think for everybody,” said Selleck.

After more than a decade together, the actors portraying the fictional Reagans bonded like real family. And they wanted it to stay that way.

The cast was so dedicated to coming back for a 14th season that they, as well as the production team, all took a sizeable pay cut to lower the show’s budget and enable more episodes.

The real truth to that is in the last year of [Blue Bloods], at our last family dinner, everybody wanted to come back. We’d already taken a 25 percent cut in salary,” Selleck revealed. “We’d already done all sorts of things to keep the show going.

But ultimately, it wasn’t enough, and CBS announced its cancellation in November 2023. The final 14th season was split into two parts, concluding in December 2024.

It was very frustrating because… out of the top 100 shows on broadcast television, Blue Bloods was number six in our fifteenth year,” Selleck explained. “Nobody wanted to leave. Everybody was gonna stay on. That’s hard to get. It may be some kind of record to have the same cast intact for that length of time. Usually if it wasn’t a family, it would be different, but you know, you couldn’t very well replace Jamie or Danny or anybody with another actor.

Selleck also acknowledged how rare it is in television for a cast to actually enjoy working together.

Maybe people don’t realize, but a lot of shows become miserable to work on,” he admitted to Danson. “You get a lot of egos and ‘I’m not coming out of my dressing room until he’s coming out’... and it’s miserable. Blue Bloods was never that.
