And ironically, for just Seasons 1 and 2, which if I have my facts straight, are generally regarded by viewers as the weakest seasons (i.e. the "Kirk seasons").

This is sad that the show and Bob himself never won a single award. He maybe gone, but he'll always be remembered. The show itself was overshadowed by Cheers.

I think that's partly the fault of the show - Stephanie and Michael were a watered-down copy of Sam and Diane.
I think it didn't get nominations after the first couple years because Newhart didn't want to go along with the steady creep of soap opera into sitcoms. Even slap-sticky Night Court managed to inject maudlin subplots into many episodes, but Newhart didn't go along with that. |

Seasons 1 and 2 were solid seasons. They had good writing and fun stories, and less stupid stuff from the later seasons. (While I'm pointing this out as a compliment for the early seasons, I still think the stupid stuff from later years was mostly funny but in a different way.)
Kirk was a consistently well-written and funny character IMO. |
