Default A span for the transition between the Classic & Modern 1990s

This transition mainly happened between August 24, 1995 and March 9, 1997:
FRIENDS premieres on NBC - September 22, 1994

Overall, late 1994 seems to be a little early for this transition, but the debut of Friends is too important to ignore. In the fall of 1994, one of the most popular sitcoms of all time would finally make its debut on NBC, Friends.

The pilot introduces six twenty-something friends who live and work in New York City: Monica Geller, a single sous chef in her mid 20s who is illegally subletting her grandmother's apartment; Ross Geller, Monica's older brother, a paleontologist whose marriage recently ended after he learned his wife, Carol, is a lesbian; Rachel Green, Monica's spoiled, self-centered, high-school best friend who has just left her fiancé at the altar and is financially cut off by her father; Chandler Bing, Ross' college roommate and best friend who lives across the hall from Monica; Joey Tribbiani, a struggling Italian-American actor and Chandler's roommate; and Phoebe Buffay, a laid-back, hippie-ish masseuse, singer and guitar player.

This changed the culture at the time, as the main character Rachel's hairstyle caused a real change in fashion as some women could finally ditch the big hair of the 80s/early 90s (or what's left of it) and finally look more updated, sleek, and clean, and this help popularize the coffee culture that was prevalent in the latter 90's. And this show would be one of the most popular shows in history, revolutionizing television, shaping a generation and defining very much of the turn of the millennium.

The 1990s era of television is now in full swing as one of the last television shows to truly define the decade had finally made its way to syndication.

SNL Cast has a radical change

The infamous 1994-95' season of SNL with the early 90s cast of Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, and a few others, plus a few new members in Norm MacDonald, Tim Meadows, etc., almost completely sabotaged the entire series of SNL. There was a total revamp of the cast come the 1995-96' season with new members in Jim Breuer, Will Ferrell, Darrell Hammond, and more.

WCW's premiere of Monday Nitro - September 4, 1995

This would officially begin the era of the Monday Night Wars between World Championship Wrestling and the World Wrestling Federation. Although it would take a couple of months for the wars to truly kick off.

The Telecommunications Act is passed - February 8, 1996

The act was the first significant overhaul of United States telecommunications law in more than sixty years, amending the Communications Act of 1934, and represented a major change in American telecommunication law, because it was the first time that the Internet was included in broadcasting and spectrum allotment.

Debut of Raw Is War - March 10, 1997

Even though this was a day after my transition had ended, WWF changing their stage pretty much truly kicked off the modern 90s era, and was the first true seeds of the Attitude Era being planted, as well as showing that the company was taking things seriously with WCW in the Monday Night Wars after WCW was kicking their a**es in the ratings.

Other events that happened:
  • Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas releases (October 7, 1994), which would serve to be the final nail in the coffin for the original Saved By The Bell.
  • The WB Network is launched (January 11, 1995)
  • UPN is launched (January 16, 1995)
  • Full House comes to an end (May 23, 1995)
  • Alanis Morrissette's most successful album Jagged Little Pill releases (June 13, 1995)
  • Stone Cold Steve Austin's WWF debut (taped December 18, 1995, aired January 8, 1996)
  • The Sabrina the Teenage Witch film premieres on Showtime (April 7, 1996) and later debuts as a series on ABC (September 27, 1996)
  • The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air comes to an end on NBC (May 20, 1996)
  • Kenan & Kel debuts on Nickelodeon (August 17, 1996)
  • Hey Arnold! debuts on Nickelodeon (October 7, 1996)
  • King of the Hill debuts on Fox (January 12, 1997)
  • Daria debuts on MTV (March 3, 1997)
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer debuts on The WB (March 10, 1997)
