James Arness admitted that he felt insecure during the first season of Gunsmoke At first, Arness was in over his cowboy hat. Dennis Weaver said he ''mourned'' the cancellation of Gunsmoke, though he left the series in 1964 "I don't think I'll ever completely leave Chester, you know," Weaver said. Burt Reynolds received 4,000 fan letters after his first ''Gunsmoke'' appearance Quint Asper was an audience's delight from the start.
