Other than what was from the books, it seems a lot came from the Waltons.

In the late Bonanza episodes, it's always fun to hear the music that later became the LHoP theme.

The author of those comparisons is quite knowledgeable. Excellent stuff. I have to contrast that with MeTV, which for example currently purports that Hoss had no women interested in him (in their radio commercials for Bonanza, MeTV-FM). Judi Meredith's character fell deeply in love with Hoss.
