Golden Globe winning actress Barbara Rush who was best known for her work in It Came from Outer Space and Peyton Place has died aged 97, her daughter has confirmed. Claudia Cowan - a Fox News Channel senior correspondent - confirmed her mother's death to Fox News Digital. She shared: "My wonderful mother passed away peacefully at 5:28 this evening. I was with her this morning and know she was waiting for me to return home safely to transition. It’s fitting she chose to leave on Easter as it was one of her favorite holidays and now, of course, Easter will have a deeper significance for me and my family." The iconic big-screen star had an impressive career that spanned over seven decades as she worked opposite an array of some of the biggest names in Hollywood including legendary leading men such as Paul Newman, Rock Hudson, Dean Martin, Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Richard Burton. was a huge star with success spanning several decades Born on January 4 1927 in Denver, Colorado, she attended the University of California in Santa Barbara in 1948. She began her acting career at the Pasadena Playhouse and was spotted there by a talent scout who then signed her to Paramount Pictures in 1950. Her movie debut came in 1950 flick The Goldbergs, an adaptation of Gertrude Berg's comedy-drama radio and television broadcast of the same name. By 1954 she was nominated for and subsequently won the Golden Globe Award for most promising newcomer – female for her performance in the science fiction horror movie It Came From Outer Space. She was well known for her role as heiress Joan Dickenson opposite Paul Newman in the 1959 legal drama The Young Philadelphians, and went on to star alongside Paul again in the hit 1967 Western movie Hombre. Barbara Rush and Dean Martin Barbara starred alongside some of the most famous Hollywood leading men including Dean Martin The actress once spoke of how she formed a friendship with starlet Marilyn Monroe telling Fox News Digital: "Oh yes, we were friends, we were in the studio club together. At least with me, when you first come to Hollywood, and I went to Paramount, they put me immediately in the studio club. It’s kind of like a sorority house. And Marilyn Monroe was there. I loved her. Marilyn was such a darling lady. She was very sweet and nice. All the girls in the studio club just had a good time." Perhaps one of most famous roles came when she was cast to star in the Batman TV series as evil Nora Clavicle in 1968 after she had grown tired of Hollywood movies and decided to switch to TV. She later spoke about how the series - which starred Adam West and ran from 1966 to 1968 - had a far greater impact than anyone had anticipated. She told Fox Digital: "Oh... when you’re an actress, you don’t think about things like that," said Rush. "You just think, ‘I have a job!’ You just don’t project what your future is going to be. And [Nora Clavicle] was just so funny. I just love comedy and she was very light-hearted. She was a kick." Following her role in Batman, she played Marsha Russell in hit soap opera Peyton Place for 75 episodes between 1968 and 1969. With a plethora of hit movies and big-name TV shows under her belt Barbara's final regular TV role was as Ruth Camden in the hit teen series 7th Heaven in 2007. Her last movie role came in the 2017 short Bleeding Hearts: The Arteries of Glenda Bryant, which also starred her niece Carolyn Hennesy. |
