TV Melissa Joan Hart Says that she Believes "Quiet on Set" Allegations

Melissa Joan Hart Believes "Quiet on Set" Allegations "100 Percent"
by Christian Holub
March 29, 2024

Melissa Joan Hart wasn't involved in the recent documentary "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV" about the abuse suffered by some Nickelodeon child stars in the '90s. In fact, she hasn't even watched it yet.

But she still believes the allegations that were brought to light in the docuseries.

I don’t know other people’s experiences. I’m not negating anything anyone else says,” Hart said on a new episode of Meghan McCain's podcast. “I’ve never been told these people’s stories that are in the documentary or and I have to say I’ve never heard a story from a Nickelodeon star personally.

Hart continued, “No one’s come to me and talked to me about any of these situations, and that’s not to say anything about anyone’s story. I absolutely trust and believe them 100 percent.

Hart said she only had a positive experience working at Nickelodeon, though her show filmed at the network's Orlando studio rather than in Hollywood.

I was surrounded by an amazing crew, an incredible cast that took such good care of me,” Hart said. “And so I don’t know if it was the difference in Orlando or the time period, whoever these guys were, they weren’t around, but I have to say, not every egg in the Nickelodeon basket is rotten. There were some people that really took care of me."

I'll just let this following comment speak for itself regarding the difference between pre and prime Dan Schneider era Nickelodeon:
Quote:
Also, I definitely think Dan is responsible for the abusive environment at Nickelodeon as he gained more power and hired more of his friends, the network became full of predators and moving operations from Orlando to Los Angeles opened up doors for high profile pervs. I also noticed a pattern with Dan’s shows was he’d create these universes where it’s mostly kids and they function independently with little to no adults present. Any adults were portrayed as bumbling, antagonistic and inept and were absent most of the episode. Dan would encourage his underage teen stars to party and drink and acted very inappropriately with them despite being an authority figure. Whether he actually touched anyone or not, he abused his power and exploited tons of kids. Looking back, his shows definitely give off creepy vibes and red flags. All the very sexual jokes, innuendo and allusions to sexual relationships despite these being minors. Nickelodeon is a children’s network and Dan was writing shows that had college frat boy humor that was inappropriate for its target audience. And while I’m aware Nicktoons have some dirty jokes, I think cartoons created by and voiced by adults is much different than having real kids perform inappropriate jokes and plots that they were uncomfortable doing.

The early Nickelodeon live-action shows like Hey Dude, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Clarissa Explains It All, Salute Your Shorts, The Secret World of Alex Mack, Welcome Freshmen, My Brother and Me, etc. were set up differently and focused on regular kids and teens who had regular parents and the humor was quirky and eccentric with some lessons thrown in. None of them had that inappropriately sexual vibe to them like Dan’s shows.
