Are Non-Looney Tunes/Tom & Jerry Shorts Underappreciated?

In particular, the ones from Disney or Walter Lantz studios. Have they become underappreciated these days when compared to say, the classic Looney Tunes shorts or Tom & Jerry? Especially given that the latter have been pretty regular on TV.

You can blame Universal and Disney for the lack of public appreciation. They really don't value their animated short subjects. It's the same with Paramount regarding Terrytoons (Mighty Mouse).

Next Thursday, on Toon In With ME, they have a Woody Woodpecker cartoon scheduled, but more than likely, it is "Pantry Panic", a cartoon that is available to anyone in the Public Domain. I think METV might pick up some of the other animated libraries later on, if the Looney Tune, Tom & Jerry and Popeye cartoon rights can't be renewed.

Personally, I think some of the Disney animated shorts from the 30's and the Goofy how to animated shorts are just as good or even better then the Tom and Jerry and MGM Happy Harmony series.

It would be the third time around (at least) on MeTV for Pantry Panic.

My guess is that the Disney shorts would be better-produced than the Columbia ones they currently have the rights to. I've mentioned before I think they are burning them off on MeTV+.

Are the Disney and Lantz shorts even available? We know MeTV will air unrestored shorts, such as the 50s Popeyes.

Oh, and on MGM--they show a lot of MGM miscellaneous shorts on MeTV+. Many of them are never shown on Toon In With Me.

I figure the Lantz cartoons that were released on DVD and Blu-Ray from Universal Studios are available for a price METV might not be willing to pay. I'm also betting they can pick up the Magoo and UPA library anytime from Sony.

What are some of the MGM shorts showing up on METV+?

The old Disney theatrical shorts will probably never be licensed to anyone outside the Disney umbrella. You think a network like ABC would wise up and put an hour long block on Saturday mornings to advertise their many brands in between cartoons.

I will never know what the deal is with Paramount and their reluctance to release Terrytoons on streaming(Paramount+, PlutoTV) or physical media. In the late 90's, TVLAND tried a Saturday morning block with the 70's Mighty Mouse show. I think the failure of that retro animation block soured them on all cartoons from that point forward.

I would think they'd look at the success of selling the WB cartoon library and say, why can't we do that?

I think programs like Toon In With ME, The Saturday Morning Cartoon block and Sunday Night Cartoon block (METV+) shows that there is still interest in theatrical cartoons. This gives companies like Warner Brothers enough confidence to still release physical media from their many animated libraries.

And to prove that people with any interest need to get out their wallets. There are absolutely more releases to come IF THIS FIRST BLU-RAY SELLS WELL!
