Daytime TV may be getting its first new soap opera in decades. CBS is partnering with the NAACP to develop an all-new daytime soap that centers a wealthy Black family. The potential soap will be called The Gates. The Gates will follow a wealthy Black family living in a posh, gated community, per Variety. |

This will be the second time in history that we will see this happen because the very first time we started seeing this new soap opera trend was in 1989 when NBC debuted Generations and it was a hit but due to the Gulf War coverage Generations was cancelled in 1991 but reruns of Generations were later seen on BET for a short time. With The Gates I think CBS is hoping to attract the soap opera genre to watch daytime TV once again and with the debut of The Gates CBS Daytime will get high ratings and it's about time CBS has a brand new soap opera to add to it's lineup to join The Bold And The Beautiful and The Young And The Restless

The Talk may be in jeopardy with CBS' plans for The Gates Black-led soap opera
Last week, CBS announced it is teaming up with The Bold and the Beautiful veteran Michele Val Jean on The Gates, the first Black daytime soap opera in 35 years. "What CBS didn’t say, however, is how long each episode of the soap would be — though it’s looking to be an hour a day — and where (or when) it would go on the schedule should it earn a series pickup," says Deadline's Lynette Rice. "Dropping The Young and the Restless is out of the question since the Bell/Sony drama ranks No. 1 in daytime and just earned a four-season pickup. Same goes for The Bold and the Beautiful, the Bell serial that is the No. 2 ranked soap in daytime and has been renewed through fall of 2025. Killing Let’s Make a Deal or The Price is Right doesn’t make sense, since both game shows have solid ratings, sound budgets, and frequently contribute much-needed specials for CBS primetime. That leaves The Talk, which remains the lowest-rated show on the CBS daytime lineup. Produced by CBS Studios and now in its 14th season, The Talk recently underwent change by hiring Rob Crabbe, the former executive producer of The Late Late Show with James Corden, to replace longtime EP Kristin Matthews." While Crabbe has made much-needed improvements, will they be enough to save The Talk? |

CBS Orders Daytime's "The Gates" to Series for January Debut
by Lynette Rice April 15, 2024 Just a few days after revealing "The Talk" will wrap its 15-season run this December, CBS announced today that it has ordered the new daytime drama "The Gates" to series and will premiere the soap in January 2025. The specific time period and launch date will be announced at a later date, but it seems certain the drama will take over "The Talk‘s" timeslot. https://deadline.com/2024/04/cbs-ord...25-1235886082/ |
