6 Actors Who Faded Into Obscurity After Winning an Oscar

Quote:
by Matthew C.F.
Mar 15, 2024

Winning an Oscar is often considered the ultimate goal for many actors in Hollywood, as it can significantly elevate their careers and establish them as esteemed figures in the industry. For some performers, receiving this prestigious accolade can lead to increased opportunities, critical acclaim, and a higher level of respect from both critics and audiences. However, there have been instances where an actor’s career has taken a downturn or even completely faltered following an Oscar win.

Despite the initial acclaim and recognition, some actors have struggled to find roles that match the caliber of their award-winning performances, leading to a decline in their professional trajectory. Additionally, the pressures and expectations that come with winning an Oscar can be overwhelming for some actors, resulting in a shift in focus or a re-evaluation of their priorities in the industry. In these cases, the aftermath of achieving the coveted Oscar can lead to unforeseen challenges and obstacles in an actor’s career. So, here are 6 actors who faded into obscurity after winning an Oscar.

Maybe it's not so grand. Can a similar thing be said about actors who have a good run on an award winning sitcom and then struggle to ever be casted again on another hit series?

10 Actors Whose Careers TANKED After Winning Oscars

Quote:
On paper, winning an Academy Award should be the pinnacle of any actor's career.

As the highest industry honor given out for acting, it's intended to be a summation of everything an actor has done up to that point, and proof that basically all their peers approve of their work.

And perhaps more importantly, an Oscar should be a major boost for an actor's livelihood, given that it boosts the marketing buzz of any future project they appear in, given that "Academy Award winner" can be included in marketing materials featuring their name.

And yet, there are a curious number of instances where Oscar-winning actors' careers have hit the skids shortly thereafter, enough that some have dubbed the phenomenon the so-called "Oscar curse."

With that in mind, these 10 performers all won Oscars for widely acclaimed performances, only for their post-award careers to be massively underwhelming, if not outright disastrous.

Some found themselves encircled by sheer mediocrity for years, while others got caught in the spiral of Razzie nominations and terrible straight-to-video movies, almost enough to let you forget they ever won an Oscar.

The lesson here? Just because an actor wins an Oscar, it doesn't necessarily chart a safe path forward for the rest of their career...

7. Roberto Benigni

Robert Benigni was on top of the world when he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Life Is Beautiful in 1998, while also receiving nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Benigni's excited, affable presence at the Oscars endeared him to basically everyone, especially when he famously climbed up on his seat after Life Is Beautiful won the Best Foreign Language Film award.

It seemed like the big Hollywood offers would start rolling in, then, but it never happened, and even in Benigni's native Italy, his next project as director-writer-actor was a brutal dud.

We're talking of course about 2002's Pinocchio, which despite being the most expensive film in the history of Italian cinema at the time, was a box office bomb and went on to score a devastating 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Worse still, Benigni himself received four Razzie nominations, and in a feat of tragic irony, won the Worst Actor award just five years after he scooped the Best Actor Oscar.

Pinocchio's failure torpedoed Benigni's career as both a filmmaker and an actor, shaking industry-wide confidence in him following Life Is Beautiful. He's directed only a single film since, 2005's The Tiger and the Snow, which was also a critical and commercial bust.

Though Benigni poetically redeemed himself by starring as Geppetto in Matteo Garrone's 2019 adaptation of Pinocchio, his career is nevertheless proof perfect of how damaging one massive flop can truly be, even if you've got an Oscar on your mantle.

2. Kim Basinger

Kim Basinger was perfectly cast as femme fatale Lynn Bracken in L.A. Confidential, and nailed the role hard enough that she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1998.

Basinger's career had begun to wane throughout the mid-1990s - possibly due to her refusal to star in Boxing Helena, resulting in a lawsuit which bankrupted her - but the Oscar seemingly ensured she'd landed firmly back in the A-list.

You certainly wouldn't know it from what followed, though, as Basinger's post-Oscar career is littered with duds, most infamously including I Dreamed of Africa, Bless the Child, While She Was Out, The Informers, Grudge Match, and the latter two entries into the Fifty Shades franchise.

Her only acclaimed projects in the quarter-century since her Oscar win are 8 Mile - which was also directed by L.A. Confidential's Curtis Hanson - 2004's drama The Door in the Floor, and the more recent Shane Black dark comedy The Nice Guys.

Basinger seems to have put her career on the back-burner in recent years, given that she's appeared in just five live-action movies over the last decade.

She's certainly deserving of far more than she's been given since winning her gong, but it remains to be seen whether a juicy acting part could lure her back into the fold.
