Colorado Buffaloes Football was the biggest story in American sports in September of 2023. Making their collapse into being one of the most hated and laughed at teams in their sport one of the most fascinating arcs in sports history...

Colorado was actually nationally ranked in September after the first three wins, like 22nd or 23rd. The media themselves really wanted to hype them up.

I know this board hates “politics” but a certain someone sort of coined the term “fake news” and I think even more than regular news this applies to sports news. Sanders and Colorado was closely followed and during the first three wins this was seen as some kind of miracle and Sanders as a miracle worker. Everything was of glowing terms. Then reality set in and they managed to only win one more game and the sports “fake news” and turned on him and his son (not without merit) and the program.

Someone said “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and I think Sanders next year will get to the 6-6 threshold for a bowl game. Maybe. If Sanders managed 6-6 this season they would have gone to a much better game that the 6-6 record reflected. Many pundits hate the bowls but I like them because I like college football and we get to see the 6-6, 7-5, 8-4, 9-3, 10-2 and 11-1’s play similar opponents and we can have the strength of each conference.

But remember, Colorado was 1-11 last year so Sanders improves their record times four this year. Don’t count him out.

I could argue 2 sides of what Deion has done; first I'll say he's doing what he was hired to do, i.e. begin establishing a program that has the quality players to win at the highest level -- but then I could argue that by dismissing most of the existing (2022) team's players, he has taken a shortcut that's negatively impacted all of those student-athletes. The transfer portal has facilitated such a shortcut.

Objectively, as long as there are no rules violations, he is free to build the program as he sees fit. And while he is guilty of some "Do you believe?" bluster with the media, which later blew up in his face, in the end it's no fault of Deion's that his program received tons of attention and scrutiny it was not yet deserving of. Media coverage "used" him to make money, and once again no one forced the networks to cover CU and Deion.

The thing that will be interesting in the coming years will be to see if CU eventually becomes a true national contender; it's a much bigger step to advance in the playoffs than to win a conference and qualify.
