TV Holiday Ep. of "Night Court" Set for Dec. 23rd

"Night Court" Returns with Special Holiday Episode ahead of Season 2 Premiere
by Denise Petski
December 19, 2023

The NBC revival of "Night Court" will return with “A Night Court Before Christmas”, a special stand-alone holiday episode set to air December 23 at 8:30 pm, its first new episode to air post-strikes.

Additionally, NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar joins in a guest-starring role.

Per the logline: It’s Christmastime at Night Court. Abby enlists Dan on her quest to track down a little girl’s letter to Santa. Gurgs’ gift for Dan isn’t what she expected. Olivia is haunted by a witness who believes herself to be The Ghost of Christmas Present.

The holiday episode will be followed by the series’ Season 2 premiere on Tuesday, January 2 at 8 pm.

Obviously the Christmas episode was originally intended to air in the middle of the season. Than the Strikes happened. They did not want this airing in February or March. Curious if they acknowledge the change in airing order at all. Clearly and not surprising Dan returns to New York once last season’s cliffhanger is resolved. I got impression show did not get far in filming when the strikes happened. It’s possible this was first thing shot after. But either way has to take place later in season 2 chronologically.

Elsewhere online fans of the show noticed there is no mention of Neil in descriptions for the Christmas special or season premiere. Very possible he is not returning. Certainly a Night Court tradition of losing cast members. No big loss. Once his crush on Abby revealed not much left to do with character. If true strange how much time they wasted on him and her fiancé. Clear that character never going to last beyond season 1 either.

I would still like to see more of the fiance, liked seeing Pete Holmes on this show. But Neil is no loss whatsoever, his bailiff replacement is already a lot more interesting. This was also one of the funniest episodes of the current spin-off, getting back to more case related humor was sorely needed. The one thing that was not good at all was dropping the theme song. They surely won't do that when the regular episodes return.

Night Court: Kapil Talwakar Not Returning as Neil in Season 2

Quote:
A source tells TVLine that the show wanted to take things in a different direction creatively, with lots of different characters and personalities, more in the vein of the original Night Court. But the source emphasizes that the cast and producers are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Talwalkar, and he will always be a part of the Night Court family.

Fans noticed that Neil didn’t appear in Night Court’s special holiday episode, which aired on Saturday. Talwalkar, a veteran of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Charmed, was a series regular when Night Court debuted in January, appearing in all 16 episodes. Season 2 — without Talwalkar — premieres Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 8/7c on NBC.

Additionally, Gary Anthony Williams, who played Flobert in the holiday episode, will be recurring in Season 2.

Nice to see my suspicions confirmed. Nothing against the actor it I had no interest in seeing an Abby and Neil relationship. Lots of fans shipped Harry and Christine on original show but it was mostly unspoken sexual tension that never dominated the show.
