The idea of a single man and two single women sharing an apartment isn't anything new or shocking in 2023 unless there's something kinky going on with them.

I think it's just a bunch of talk that will go nowhere. I'm curious to see how Kelsey Grammar's reboot goes. I don't want to see anybody else playing Jack other than John Ritter. Same for the co-stars. Same for the chatter about a reboot of 'Wings". Leave Joe and Helen alone!

If they ever did a reboot, I wouldn't want them to have new people playing Jack, Janet, and Chrissy. The originals can't be replaced.
I would prefer three young people playing new characters that move into their old apartment. I loved the Three's Company set. Maybe even have Larry and Cindy as having married and bought the building and they live downstairs as the landlords. |

You can have a sitcom of people living together but it would not be Threes Company. The late 70s had an edge to them with sex TV. The show really pushed the envelope just like All In The Family did. People would assume men and women living together were sleeping together in a 2 bedroom apartment. The landlord was so against it that they had to develop a lie that Jack was gay. It was very cutting edge and different. But the last several seasons even on the show the premise was not working anymore. Jack was still pretending to be gay. The roommates all had good jobs and had no reason to live together. Episodes like Extra Extra still played on the stereotype that the set up was all sexual in nature. It just got really dumb. So I dont think you could do a reboot of this show. It was a moment in history before the conservative 80s came and the AIDS crisis came. It was the disco age of fun. That does not exist today.

It wouldn't be the same. I'm not even sure it would be good.

Not only would a Three's Company remake not work today for the reasons already mentioned, there is something else to consider.
A few weeks back I saw the remake of Magnum PI for the first time. Anyone who is familiar with the original would know what I am talking about. A female Higgins? Not only was this character now a female, but the bigger issue for me was that she was younger. It was the same issue with the remake of Hawaii 5 0. The characters that were older in the original version are now younger. They are all 20 or 30 something. Would that would mean for a Three's Company remake is that the Ropers or Mr. Furley or whoever the landlord would be, would be in the same age group as the roomates. I also noticed a mistake in the article by Megan Elliott. She stated that both the Ropers didn't approve of a man living with 2 women. We as fans know, that Mrs. Roper knew Jack wasn't gay. |

The casting would be all over the place and the jokes probably wouldn't be as funny. |

Regardless on who would be cast it would not work. The reason the formula worked in 1977 was because it had never been done before. All the sexual innuendo and misunderstandings were hilarious and never seen on TV before. It was the talk of the town and I remember being in 4th grade and kids would brag to their friend they were allowed to watch it. The scenes like when Chrissy and Jack are in the kitchen with the puppy and Janet hears them thinking they are having sex. In the episode the rivals Mrs Roper wants to sleep in the kids' apartment because of paint fumes downstairs. Janet and Chrissy have a big fight and Chrissy is sleeping on the couch. Mrs Roper comes up and Chrissy then offers her bed to Mrs Roper. When Mrs Roper opens the door to the bedroom Jack and Janet are on the bed and Jack is trying to cheer Janet up about the fight she had with Chrissy. Janet is telling Jack she cant do it and Jack says I want you to do it. Mrs Roper in a panic leaves the room thinking Jack is trying to get Janet in bed. It leads to even a funnier sequence in the living room with Chrissy. These kinds of segments would not be that funny today. But back then they were so over the top. All In The Family is a good analogy. Archie was racist and the audience would laugh at his racism. It was so cutting edge. Today none of that would be funny.
People need to let the classics be. You cant replicate the magic. |

![]() But seriously, I think silly sex jokes could still work today, but race and gay jokes wouldn't work today with younger audiences. |

Sex jokes may work but not like they did in 1977. It was never seen before. In its first short season it was already #2 sitcom in the ratings. Today the sex jokes would have to be more graphic and that would not make them funny. One of my favorite episodes is Helen's Rendezvous. Everything thinks Helen is cheating on Stanley with his best friend. It was hysterical. I cant imagine anyone 40 years later could have the same impact with the same script. Casting anyone old, new, or whatever could not due these scripts the same way. The same thing with I Love Lucy, All In The Family, etc |
