Arrow 2002 MTV VMAs: Some Personal Thoughts On the Eminem, Moby, Triumph Blow-Up

I don't want to necessarily call myself an Eminem hater or flat out apologist. One side of me doesn't really understand why he needs to frequently pick on the mother of his daugther. As for his mother, the first though obviously is to rip on Marshall for constantly trashing the person who gave birth to him. But to be fair, since you or I didn't live Marshall Mather's childhood and the supposedly crappy treatment that his allegedly neglectful, white trash mother gave to Eminem throughout his childhood I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

With that being said, the only reason that Em looked bad after the whole Triumph/Moby bit was because unlike Moby, Em obviously couldn't make everybody know that he can also take a joke while being put on the spot. And yes, yelling about hitting men w/ glasses and screaming "What little girl!" during your acceptance speech automatically increases the "grumpy jerk scale." At the same time though, it isn't like Moby was simply being targeted by Eminem in the same fashion as say 'N Sync was.

How many of you remember during the height of Eminem's "controversy" surrounding his lyrics when Em was scheduled to perform on the Grammys? It was Moby who frequently wanted to put his mug on TV to comment on who "offensive & dangerous" the content in stuff like Eminem's music was (particularly to really young audiences). So frankly, the reason why Moby was being targeted by Eminem was simply because he "reaped what he sowed" when he decided to become the captian of the self-righteous moral police. The problem w/ Eminem when it comes to his "battles" is that the people (e.g. Moby, Christina Aguilara, Britney Spears, 'N Sync, etc.) who he goes after don't really have the idea of getting in "lyrical battles and dissing" as part of their game or genre to be more exact. Even Everlast is a fairly easy target because of his one-hit wonder status w/ House of Pain, his heart problems, and the fact that Everlast went from a rapping, pub hounding Irishman to a folk singing supposedly devote Muslim who goes by the alias "Whitey Ford."
